The annual jeans/footwear combo confusion starts again

I always struggle with this!

So - skinny jeans are easy - tuck into boots.

Other jean shapes that are cropped or can be turned up - also ok with boots or trainers.

What about full length straight leg jeans? Boots don't work. Are trainers ok? What about socks with them, trainer socks or normal ankle socks?

Tips please?

Sasuma- I’m with you. I think that look is great. Jeannne Damas is my favourite style icon. I’ve bought 2 pairs of boots and 2 pairs of jeans for this kind of look this year.

Only problem is all my other boots go with skinnies! I have a pair of sheepskin house boots (which I live in at home over winter) which aren’t going to work with them. And other ankle boots and dog walking boots.

I think I need some slim leg at a slightly longer length too, which I think will go with all my other boots.

Although I want to move away from skinnies, I think they are very easy in the winter months.

Although having said all of that I also don’t think we will be going out much this winter so joggers might be a better option!

I wear straight leg jeans turned up with DMs under them. Turned up, but not so they're shorter than the boot - no cold ankles.

Sort of like an 80's skinhead, but without the general thuggish bits of the look, only the jeans and boots! Grin

I can't abide tucking my jeans into my boots (on myself, don't have a problem with anyone else!).. It sets my teeth on edge! Anyone else?

I wear ankle boots with jeans but my jeans are full length as in reach the floor barefoot - these photos are of shorter cropped/ankle skimming jeans

I may have to buy either some very long socks or tights so I don’t have cold ankles. And can also wear the shorter jeans around the house Without getting cold.

Why would anyone want to wear jeans that look as if they bought the wrong length or that shrunk in the wash? Those jeans look like the ones people were laughing at not so long ago, worn by people who don't have a mirror.

Longer jeans turned up look far better than buying them a size too small and saying it's fashion.

Yesterday I saw a very stylish woman wearing really dark blue bootcuts. 🤨 Are they back 'in'?
She did look good though, I have to say!

I wear skinnies, ankle boots and massive thick woolly knee length socks scrunched down too. It’s so comfy. Super warm ankles. I really hate the look that sasuma posted. With the baggy denim slapping against those horrible heeled boots. Soz sasuma, I’m sure you hate my look too! I can do rolled up jeans and DMs, that’s a good look. But jeans cropped at ankle look like what we used to call ankle swingers or hoisties in the 90s. Which was the absolute pinnacle of uncool. So I could never go back to that because my teenage brain won’t let me.

Can any of you who wear warm socks scrunched down recommend a pair? I like that look but can never find the right socks! @SwanShaped @pguppgdown ?

I thought skinny jeans became illegal at some point during 2020? Did I get my wires crossed? Because wide legs with flats ...

Sasuma · 04/09/2020 09:02

@SwanShaped it’s all perspective isn’t it - I’m guessing I’m a bit younger than you as I don’t have the memories of the ankle swingers of the 90s so don’t have that association! On the other hand, skinny jeans look really out of date to me and I wouldn’t wear them.

Each to their own and I think we can all agree it’s good to have some choice and variety!

@Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree yes definitely looks like tights or maybe some thin/fine knit socks? Cosy!

I Tried wearing block heeled ankle boots with long straight jeans ,it just looked sooo dated! And so unflattering, I don’t think Jeanne looks any better either TBH Grin.
I think they really need to be low Chelsea type.
Any other type of ankle boots will only work when there is a gap and skin shows.

I only wear skinny jeans and I don’t care what anyone else thinks Grin
I also tuck them into my boots Grin
I have thick boot socks which poke out from the top of the boots and I like the look.
However...if I’m wearing heeled boots then I do turn them up to skim the top of the boot.
I quite fancy some bootcut jeans but haven’t found any I love yet.

I've got a few pairs of slim boot cut jeans and I'll be wearing them with my docker boots (over the top of them). They are longer than flat length, but seem the right length for these boots. It seems to look quite flattering, but I guess I'll get soggy bottom of jeans!

SwanShaped · 04/09/2020 10:58

@Lurkingforawhile all of mine have been presents so no idea where they came from. Thick grey woollen ones are good.

@Sasuma yes it’s a good job we’re all different. It almost makes me do a double take when I see ankle swingers coz I can’t believe anyone is actually wearing them in public! Also, those tiny 90s bags which are back in. My husband’s daughter was over the other day and had left hers on the side. Made me have a sudden flashback. The sudden skinnies hatred is funny. To me they still seem modern.

I have some narrow bootcut jeans that I wear over lace up boots no roll up. They aren’t long enough to get wet in the rain.

Sasuma · 04/09/2020 12:35

@SwanShaped ha the little bags! Seen loads of them around. Not sure how much they’d fit Hmm Yes to everyone being different, life would be boring otherwise.

I am NOT going to start wearing heels again and I do fear that they are needed with some of these styles.

@Neolara @Smallsteps88 could you share some photos of how you’d wear jeans and what footwear for autumn/winter? Genuinely interested to see alternatives to the ideas I shared.

Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea what shoes / boots to wear with jeans. I clicked on the thread hoping for inspiration!

I infinitely prefer the "longer jeans rolled up over boots" look than the "oh no, my jeans shrunk in the wash and I didn't notice" look. But that could well be because I'm old and remember people wearing slightly too short bootcut jeans 30-30 years ago, not to be cool, but because they bought sizes that didn't really fit them. So to me, that look just seems a bit embarrassing. But if you're younger, it probably doesn't have those connotations. It might just look refreshingly different.

Sounds like the 00s look coming back, shania Twain sort of a look. Except without the leopard print.

Ankle swingers remind me of the 1970s, when you'd gotten too tall for your jeans but your mum was trying to make them last another couple of months 🤣
I'm going to wear skinnies and if I lose enough weight, will wear knee high boots zipped over the top a la 1992! Red magazine says it's okay, so there!
Or skinnies rolled up to graze the top of heeled ankle boots. Or do the chunky sock thing between skinnies and Timberland type boots.
