Non-frumpy rain jacket?

BabCNesbitt · 29/08/2020 20:20

I recently bought a Joules Coast jacket from eBay, but since wearing it I’ve noticed that nearly everyone else I’ve noticed in similar styles is about a decade older than me! It’s a perfectly nice jacket but I’ve realised it makes me feel just a little bit frumpy in it... (Also, it hasn’t actually kept me dry, which is kind of essential for a raincoat, I think.)

Can anyone recommend a warmish, stylish raincoat that’s vegan (no down or wool), above the knee, available in colours other than black, and not covered in logos? Oh, and preferably not shaped at the waist, because I’m built like a brick with tits and any waist shaping just makes me look about three feet across.

Thank you!

I hate to say this on S&B, but truthfully, hand on heart, there really isn't a warm stylish raincoat that keeps you or anyone dry AND chic. I like my Didriksons (have two, one insulated, the other not). Mine are navy and olive, I love them, I stay dry. ANd in the winter or rain they are efficient. But you may wish to ignore my post because I am part of the decade older than you. The very best I have seen, and they are absurdly expensive, come from a norwegian website called, I think, Norwegian Rain . I loved them until I saw the cheapest was about 600 euros.

Protected species. There's 25% off till end of August, code is rain25
Only rain jacket I've ever felt good in. I have the commuter and the city walker. www.protected-species.com/waterproof-parka/

spacepoodle · 29/08/2020 20:55

I am weirdly excited by this thread and, especially, the post by @Gillybobs. Do they really keep the rain off? Are they warm?

thedevilinablackdress · 29/08/2020 20:56

I think it's a bit depressing that you view being 10 years older in such a negative way. I don't mean to have a go, and if you've gone off the coat, fair enough. But if you do like it, and it does the job, it's a good coat still.

Gillybobs · 29/08/2020 20:59

They definitely keep the rain offs, they are proper technical fabric (hence the price) but I've had mine a few years and they look brand new. Definitely wind proof too. On extremely cold days I wear a uniqlo lightweight down jacket underneath.
I'm kind of evangelical about them as before discovering them I spent a lifetime cold and wet due to refusing to wear a sensible jacket!

ItsmineAllmine · 29/08/2020 21:03

I feel your pain. I honestly think there's a massive lack of stylish rain coats. On these threads loads of people always mention Seasalt coats, but I'm sorry if I offend anyone but they are definitely verging on frumpy. I spent ages looking and eventually ordered a Hunter rain coat, mainly because they comes in a few nice colours and not just blaxk or khaki. I still feel slightly frumpy when wearing it but it's the best of a bad bunch....

Mrsmophead · 29/08/2020 21:36

I agree @ItsmineAllmine the Seaside Janelle is not as stylish or pretty as I envisaged. The Hunter has great reviews and is apparently super waterproof.
OP Rains have a lovely longer length rain coat. It's on ASOS. It's button closed as opposed to zip so it was a no go for me but it hangs beautifully, is stylish as a rain coat can get and a great length.

Kat772 · 29/08/2020 22:09

Why would anyone want to look 10 years older than they actually are though ?

DonEmmanuelsDingleberries · 29/08/2020 23:01

I've just bought this Dawson waterproof jacket from Tog24 which I love. It's a lightweight jacket, but they have a lot of other styles you might like and I don't see them mentioned often.

Like a previous poster, I also rate my Didrikson parka for practicality. I wouldnt called it stylish, but I certainly don't feel frumpy in it.

North Face are often heavy handed with their labels, but some of their designs are more discreet, and the couple that I've had have been great.

Alternatively you might want to look at Rains: www.uk.rains.com. I've not bought anything there myself, but they're influenced by Scandinavian design, and have a large selection of colours.

I saw this one in store (Asda) and was shocked at how nice it was. It might not fit what you are after but thought it was really nice for the money. It reminded me a little of scandi styles. It was matt not shiny too (a problem with cheaper coats)

I rate Seasalt coats. They are classic and fit nicely, and are waterproof. I don't think I look any older in mine but I did think I was grown up buying a 'proper coat' Wink

Protected Species Commuter, as pp said.

I absolutely love mine. Thin fleece or gilet underneath on colder days.

hammeringinmyhead · 30/08/2020 07:39

I have the Joules Coast in yellow from 3 years ago and I'm considering donating it because I too have gone off the shape.

I now have one from Brakeburn with little rainclouds printed on it and a teal pac a mac. I didn't want to invest too much as it's mainly for throwing in a boot with a muddy buggy. It seems that in terms of stylish shapes, you get what you pay for!

curlytops21 · 30/08/2020 07:53

I've been looking at the same this week and narrowed it down to a Didriksons Helle or one from Protected Species. Went for the former as i wanted navy and also it was half the price of PS. Got it for about £135, but the same one was available in black, red and olive from £96 online.

I wasn't looking for an very warm one but there are other reasonably priced Didriksons available if you are.

inmylifeIlovedthemall · 30/08/2020 08:14

Oooh I love that Protected Species Commuter.

I am a size 12 in places like Jigsaw, Hobbs etc and a 10 in my current Seasalt Parka. Any suggestions as to the best size to order please ?

Babamamananarama · 30/08/2020 08:32

This Arket one looks promising - Scandinavia style at a more high street price:

www.arket.com/en_gbp/women/jackets-coats/product.oversized-rain-parka-black.0900585001.html

Dunno about warm but def waterproof.

askinfforfriend · 30/08/2020 08:36

After a long time looking exactly for a summer rain jacket I ordered this one from Everlane. Hasn't arrived yet but it's a good price (there's 12.5% added for tax) and I like that is made from plastic bottles.

I got a protected species parka when they were on brandalley and the fit was all wrong for me - it's really narrow at the bottom. Maybe the commuter fits better.

resipsa · 30/08/2020 08:36

More of the same! I have an Ilse and always get compliments on it.

SNStoday · 30/08/2020 08:43

I saw a review for a Dutch brand called Maium the other day. They are available in bright colours and are made from recycled materials. Definitely more raincoat than parka though.

I have a North Face parka but to be honest it's three or four years old now and last winter let the rain in along the seams every time it was more than drizzle. Miserable!

Alltheprosecco · 30/08/2020 08:48

Also weirdly excited about this thread. Have been looking for a longer raincoat for ages. Really like that everlane one @askinfforfriend.

askinfforfriend · 30/08/2020 08:53

I'll let you know what it's like when it arrives 😊

CosmoMacaroon · 30/08/2020 09:00

I have a Stutterheim and I love it... it's not lined but it's rubberised so the rain just drips off it. They're all unisex but I have the Mosebacke and it's A-line shaped, so more "feminine" (and I think they say that one is a women's coat). They're really well made and stylish (they don't look like much on the website, but a bit of googling or following on Instagram will you show what they look like on an actual person so you can see the shape - the Mosebacke is more flared than it looks on the models). If you like minimalist Skandi style then I'd recommend one.

thedevilinablackdress · 30/08/2020 09:02

SNStoday you can get the coat re-proofed. North Face can advise.

Kat77 The coat doesn't actually make the OP look older and older =/= "frumpy" (terrible misogynistic word, see the thread on "are cardigans frumpy")

Mintjulia · 30/08/2020 09:04

You could go for a layered ski jacket, warm, waterproof and available in every colour under the sun.
My favourite so far has been a Schoffel shooting jacket that was totally waterproof, warm, down-free, looked great and was indestructible.
But it was khaki. And someone pinched it after I'd had it three years Grin

Bamboobo · 30/08/2020 09:12

I've just got a Petit Bateau one and I love it! Have been out in torrential rain the last few days and I've been very snug and dry.

They're £20 off at the moment.

I have a Gudrun coat which was described as showerproof but it's kept me dry in very heavy rain. I love it and it has had lots of compliments. It's about four years old but they will have something similar in their new range.
