Cardigans -frumpy?

What makes a cardigan frumpy? They are for sale in every shop year after year so I don't ever see them not being in fashion, people clearly wear them year round but what makes one frumpy?

OP posts:

I look awful in a cardigan...I'm short and overweight, I definitely look frumpy in them. I don't mind a fitted black cardigan that isn't too long and buttons up...I like that over a dress sometimes.

My sister is taller and slimmer than me...she looks nice in a cardigan and makes it look fashionable

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 27/08/2020 18:40

I found a crop round neck cardi lurking in the back of a drawer a couple of weeks ago and popped it on top of a dress, OMG it looked so dated! Straight in the bin. Slouchy mannish ones with mum jeans are the way forward. That said, I have a huge collection of hooded cardigans for wfh which I'm not parting with. I did accidentally find myself wearing one on a zoom today though and whipped it off pdq.

evilharpy · 27/08/2020 18:44

I have a cardi on today! A fitted waist length navy one from jigsaw, very plain. With a breton t shirt, straight leg lightbwash jeans that I wear cuffed, and pewter Nikes. Now worried I'm a big frump Grin

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/08/2020 18:57

Thanks for all the Dino love - the buttons are poppers @AlwaysLatte!

@Spottyegg and @floisme I have that Arket cardigan in the pinky colour, the dusty green, and a bright orange - the green and orange are from last year. I am a UK 10 and mine are size small, and not particularly fitted.

woodhill · 27/08/2020 19:01

Love cardigans- essential in workplace

foxtiger · 27/08/2020 19:02

I think short, fitted cardigans are anything but frumpy, and I'm counting the days till I can comfortably wear the three cashmere ones I found brand-new in a charity shop last year - best bargain ever, in green, purple and black. I'd love a red one in the same shape and texture but nobody gets that lucky twice.

Floisme · 27/08/2020 19:04

Thanks Judy - very helpful. Sounds as if you like them!

I wouldn't bin it Lonny if it's in decent nick, unless you have no space. It'll come round again.

woodhill · 27/08/2020 19:08

Or give it to a charity shop

LesLavandes · 27/08/2020 19:13

I love cardigans. I have tonnes in all shapes and colours. 'Long live the cardigan' 😊

TwentyViginti · 27/08/2020 19:17

PLease give your frumpy cardis to charity shops! it's me that buys them Grin

Only in natural fibres, mind.

coffeeandcardigans · 27/08/2020 19:25

I also love cardigans (hence the name) and own many although I have culled recently as I've bought a lot more jumpers in the past couple of years.
They are a workwear staple for me, I always seem to go between too hot and too cold so like to have layers I can take on and off easily. I also like being able to show off a nice top underneath. I do think the more classic fitted thin knit styles look a bit dated now but I haven't stopped wearing them completely. As others have said, more chunky, slightly cropped cardigans are definitely in fashion and I have some nice long ones too that maybe aren't super stylish but I like them anyway!

bumhead · 27/08/2020 19:25

I can never have enough cardigans!

nickelbabe · 27/08/2020 19:31

they're not frumpy.
they're the perfect garment - you can undo it when you're a bit wamrer, and take it off completely without ruining your hair when you're actually oht.
You can fasten it when you're cold, and snuggle right into it when you're really cold.

And you can get them in all types of materials, patterns and thicknesses.

Cardigans are the most versatile fashion garment

Saltyauntiepoop · 27/08/2020 19:31

I love a cardi but can never look at a waterfall cardi/jacket without thinking of labia, vulva, beef curtains..🤮 (vomit at the expression - nothing wrong with natural labias).
So i stay away from waterfall style.

nickelbabe · 27/08/2020 19:31

hot
warmer

GuyFawkesDay · 27/08/2020 19:35

Teacher workwear staple especially as they cope well with the hot classroom/cold classroom/playground duty layering up and down transition

Love the Dino cardi but I'm very curvy and suspect it would look cropped on me!

I'm contemplating a trip to habedasher to get nice buttons to make my cheapo cardigans look nicer

Craftycorvid · 27/08/2020 19:49

foxtiger where do you go charity shopping? Envy

And saltyauntiepoop I’m looking at my cardi’ with frilly bit on the front and struggling to see labia... nope. Grin

This works on coats, jackets and dresses too! try charity shops/car boots/ebay for lovely vintage buttons as well.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 27/08/2020 20:14

Bin does = charity shop, fear not lovers of slightly dated cropped ones.

Oly4 · 27/08/2020 20:20

I have round necked cashmere cardigans that never date.
But I don’t wear them buttoned up, I don’t wear them to “match” a colour in a dress. I think they are chic with a pair of jeans and white trainers.
I would never buy a waterfall cardi

anon444877 · 27/08/2020 20:25

I love cardigans, neat, long, chunky, you name it. My favourite season is autumn when the shops being in their knitwear.

I don’t like waterfall, or the ones with no buttons you pin, or zipped ones.

LunaTheCat · 27/08/2020 21:58

Cardi lover here and I am not frumpy! Essential for us women of a certain age with hot flushes!
I buy good quality, natural fibres

  • cashmere ( on sale!), merino or cotton. I have cropped, v and round necks and a long grey cashmere slouchy one. It depends what you wear them with. It is about length and proportion. The slouchy grey looks good with loose dresses. T shirt, jeans and a cropped cardi. Have fun.
BestIsWest · 27/08/2020 22:42

Another cardi lover. Essential in the office with air con and also comfy when wfh. My all time favourite is a grey cashmere number which, I admit, is slightly waterfally but it looks ok with almost anything - dresses, jeans and a white t-shirt. And it is so useful.

Helps that I don’t care about ‘frumpy’ though.

bendmeoverbackwards · 27/08/2020 22:52

@Moonshinemisses do you have any links to long cardis please?

Moonshinemisses · 28/08/2020 00:27

@bendmeoverbackwards I don't have any links but l get a lot of them from asos. I really like noisy may, Vero Moda & Topshop ones. I also found some great ones in H&m last year.
