How can I remove a brand symbol from a new jacket without damaging the fabric?

I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this in--please feel free to steer me elsewhere if not. I think we could could with a "tips" section, by the way.

I just bought a running jacket from Nike. The quality and fit are excellentstreets ahead of any other fitness brandbut I hate that items are covered in branding. There's a belt around the waist with "Nike" embroidered all the way around and at least 10 Nike tick-marks. I'll be wearing my Nike running shoes, leggings, and hat, also all covered in the ticks, so it's a bit much. I look like a billboard.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the ticks? They seem to be ironed on the fabric--quite plastic-y, but I don't know what they're made from. I have tried in the past a couple of times to use nail polish remover and various other substances, but they have ruined the fabric and this time I want to make sure I know what I'm doing.

Thank you for any advice.

Sounds a bit high risk to be tumble drying technical fabrics on hot (meant for cottons and towels etc) just to remove branding! Either make your peace with it or return it, plenty of subtle branding available in equally good or better brands if you know where to look!

@EarringsandLipstick

You chose to come to a thread you don't want to contribute to, be rude, and then act like a victim.

😂😂😂

Wrong.

  1. I did want to contribute, and so I did 🤷🏻‍♀️
  2. I wasn't rude - I think what you are doing is ridiculous and said so. Allowed to do that!
  3. Not a victim & didn't act like one - just commented mildly on your unpleasantness.

No nastiness. 2 posts from me, one agreeing with another poster, one responding to you. It's the way it works ...

Not sure what you think you're the target of, but enjoy your de-logoing, glad it makes you happy 😉

And of course here you are again.

You came to a lighthearted thread to be unpleasant. I believe you that you have no understanding of what the problem is. You're likely the kind of person who has been raised to think constant superiority and negativity is normal.

I'm a moderator at a forum where people come to get help with technical issues. We have a policy of immediately deleting posts like yours and banning the offenders if they persist. There are always those who want to feel superior and/or spread their misery. It is important to shut down bullies because people like you poison online communities.

Please take your unpleasantness elsewhere.

@Talklessmilemore, thanks. I wouldn't put anything in a hot tumble dryer, but a hair dryer on an isolated spot (as someone suggested) might work. I'll try it on something old.

Nike makes the best fitness gear. There's no other brand I have tried that offers such effective support. Also, the fabrics are always opaque and items last a long time and fit very well, which is a problem with other brands I have tried.

I do a lot of exercisemarathons, triathlons, etcso there are aspects of the quality that become important.

Look at Sweaty Betty, Lululemon, Salomon for alternative discretely logo'd running gear. Far superior to Nike (or at least I think it is!) and nowhere near as obvious

Chemenger · 28/08/2020 07:48

I totally sympathise, I hate clothes with words and logos of any size, but sometimes there is no alternative. I’m about to draw the flack from you OP, by admitting I play golf and it is near impossible to get functional golf stuff without logos. I do not buy Nike anyway because I hate Tiger Woods with an almost irrational fervour so I wouldn’t have your exact problem. Good luck with your removal efforts.

justanotherneighinparadise · 28/08/2020 07:48

I think the permanent marker idea on the rocks will work well.

justanotherneighinparadise · 28/08/2020 07:48

AnotheBloodyChinHair · 28/08/2020 07:52

Are they not a visibility feature for when you run in the dark?

Well, I totally sympathise with your hatred for Tiger Woods! If there were any other brand that could hold everything in and cover it without see-through, I'd have your standards too!

That is a good point! Maybe I should use a marker to change the shapes so they're not ticks next time I'm watching a movie!

I’m thinking if you put anything over the logos they will need to be glued on as if you sew them it will make tiny holes and it won’t be waterproof any more (if it is in the first place)?

So you’d need to glue the things on.

That’s achievable but I think the whole darkening down the logo so it’s barely noticeable sounds like a plan.

Permanent marker sounds good as it shouldn’t ‘run’ in the wash or in the rain and stain things.

Or possible nail varnish? I’ve used that on coat buttons that were too pale for the coat and it made them much darker grey. A bit shiny though so that might not work for fabric. Do they make Matt nail varnish??

Difficult to say what to do! Hope you find a good solution. Grin

Sasuma · 28/08/2020 08:22

I’d be careful about the tumble drying idea! Most technical clothing I’ve had is not suitable for tumble drying so I’d be worried about destroying that new jacket.

I don’t have any practical suggestions but get what you mean about branding - I get all my running stuff from Sweaty Betty and it’s much better than the Nike stuff I used to have, plus it’s just nice prints/solid colours and pretty much no logos. Any that are there are really discrete. So maybe one to look at in the future.

Budapestpest · 28/08/2020 10:14

Op I don’t have an opinion on the Nike ticks but given a choice of who is the rudest between you and earringsandlipstick, I’m afraid it’s you

disappointingdessert · 28/08/2020 10:46

I disagree ^

Budapestpest · 28/08/2020 11:08

Of course you can disagree, but it was the op who descended into commenting on how the pp had been raised, used the word bullying and poisoning online communities. Accusing them of thinking constant negativity and superiority are normal. Quite extreme really.
Read back earringsandlipsticks posts, nowhere near as rude!

justanotherneighinparadise · 28/08/2020 11:44

I quite like the zero negativity approach OP has decided on. It’s quite refreshing.

Budapestpest · 28/08/2020 11:46

I see your point but I think she’s completely destroyed her argument by being so very rude herself!

justanotherneighinparadise · 28/08/2020 13:36

I think her bullish attitude fits very well into how Mumsnet works. People give out shit, other people volley it back. It’s been going on for at least the nine years I’ve been on here and I’m sure for a long while before that.

ChaChaCha2012 · 28/08/2020 13:45

You're very rude.

And there's nothing special about Nike brand quality. If it's what you like, good for you, but suggesting it's better than any other high street brand is nonsense.

Binglebong · 28/08/2020 14:04

Do feedback to Nike too - at the moment they just see people buying the clothing so think people are happy with it. If enough people comment you might get somewhere.

TonytheDog · 28/08/2020 15:13

Can you turn everything inside out? I've always refused to buy my DC Gap hoodies because the GAP is sooo big.

You could iron the section with the label, with great proof paper on top, this might 'melt' it so you could pick it off?

Otherwise, I'd get a rainbow pack of Sharpies and have a big colouring in session. I fact, I'd get any DC to do it? I colour in logos on school shoes with Sharpie and it lasts well.

Quietlyloud · 28/08/2020 15:18

If branding annoys you this much, I’d suggest not buying from the brand. It seems pointless. I know you said their gear is good but I’m sure there will be alternatives if the logo is that much of an issue.

Quietlyloud · 28/08/2020 15:27

TonytheDog Preempting this with I’m not being snarky and genuinely asking. If the logo size for gap is an issue for you that’s okay, but if your kid is fine with it why not get it for them?
