How can I remove a brand symbol from a new jacket without damaging the fabric?

I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this in--please feel free to steer me elsewhere if not. I think we could could with a "tips" section, by the way.

I just bought a running jacket from Nike. The quality and fit are excellentstreets ahead of any other fitness brandbut I hate that items are covered in branding. There's a belt around the waist with "Nike" embroidered all the way around and at least 10 Nike tick-marks. I'll be wearing my Nike running shoes, leggings, and hat, also all covered in the ticks, so it's a bit much. I look like a billboard.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the ticks? They seem to be ironed on the fabric--quite plastic-y, but I don't know what they're made from. I have tried in the past a couple of times to use nail polish remover and various other substances, but they have ruined the fabric and this time I want to make sure I know what I'm doing.

Thank you for any advice.

Don’t know the answer but feel your pain, I HATE being a walking advert and spent ages last night trying to find some new running gear and instantly rejected anything with massive logos... those Nike t shirts with the tick literally across both boobs give me the rage! They look like such a nice fit but I just can’t!

AyeCorona1 · 27/08/2020 11:19

Permanent marker. Won't remove the logo but will make it much less billboard-y and not damage the fabric.

PersonaNonGarter · 27/08/2020 11:26

Let it go. You’ll wreck the top.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 27/08/2020 11:40

If it's embroidered and you try to take the stitching out all you'll see after is 1000's of tiny holes if they coat.

I agree, either suck it up and wear it as is or look for another coat

Yes, it's painful. I do the same--reject anything with massive logos. These are the items with the fewest logos and they're still too much!

I just went running and realized that the tops of my shoes are made of mesh, so the tick marks on my socks are also visible. It's ridiculous.

Thank you. That's a great idea. I think the others are right that removing the mark risks ruining the top, but a marker would at least make the mark less obnoxious.

Can you turn the belt round, so that the blank inside is visible instead or is it stitched to the jacket?

Nixen · 27/08/2020 12:17

You need to either make peace with branding or just not buy them. Ridiculous to destroy the clothing to hide that it’s Nike!

wishingitwasfriday · 27/08/2020 12:20

I know this doesn't answer your question but just to say that I pay no attention to anything runners are wearing and I don't think anyone else does.
When I run I'm also decked out in Nike gear, because there's and outlet shop near to me and it's cheaper than buying supermarket workout clothes!
As long as the clothes fit and they perform as they should then it really doesn't matter.

It's stitched into the jacket, unfortunately! I have decided to be at peace with it if I can get rid of all the other ticks everywhere else.

You're very lucky to live where you do.

It's not that I'm worried about what other people think. It bothers me!

I (accidentally!) discovered that the white transfers start peeling off after being in the tumble drier on hot, then they can be picked off by hand..

Ooh, that sounds promising! I might try it first with a hairdryer on an old item in case the fabric doesn't like heat.

The ironed type MAY come off with the help of a hair dryer. It works for getting labels of nice jars / bottles.

CarolVordermansArse · 27/08/2020 12:56

Could you cover it with some fabric or iron on repair tape?

I have a pair of leggings with diagonal striped bits on the calves, leggings are perfect but the stripes are foul, they feel clammy. Have often wondered if they could be removed but I think not.

Antst · 27/08/2020 13:01

Thanks, both of you. A patch could work. I forget that kind of thing exists because it is so long since I have seen a craft/sewing shop anywhere. If I mess up the hairdryer method, this can be the solution.

Be cautious with the hairdryer @Antst - I melted a sleeve of a running top with a hairdryer once!!!

Yes. This is a ridiculous thread 🤷🏻‍♀️

@EarringsandLipstick, let us know where to send the emergency services, since you're obviously being forced to read it.

Um...I'm allowed to comment OP? It's an open forum on the Internet!

I do think you're nuts - if you don't want to wear Nike branded clothes, don't waste your money buying them, only to look for bizarre ways to remove the logo.

Still, at least you've a pleasant way about you 😐

Antst · 27/08/2020 21:34

@EarringsandLipstick Good try!

You chose to come to a thread you don't want to contribute to, be rude, and then act like a victim.

I'm allowed to do what I like with my appearance and time. Notice I didn't comment about people who love covering themselves in logos :), although I did make it clear why I buy Nike. You ignored that part to create more nastiness.

If you choose to insert yourself and create an unpleasant atmosphere, then yes, you are certainly free to do that. And I'm also free to judge it! Sorry. You picked the wrong target, didn't you!

😂😂😂

Wrong.

  1. I did want to contribute, and so I did 🤷🏻‍♀️
  2. I wasn't rude - I think what you are doing is ridiculous and said so. Allowed to do that!
  3. Not a victim & didn't act like one - just commented mildly on your unpleasantness.

No nastiness. 2 posts from me, one agreeing with another poster, one responding to you. It's the way it works ...

Not sure what you think you're the target of, but enjoy your de-logoing, glad it makes you happy 😉

PawPawNoodle · 27/08/2020 23:32

I'm another person thats a little confused as to why you buy so much Nike if you don't like to wear branding (I understand about the jacket quality but socks?)

Either way - a solvent like nail polish remover with acetone in might work better than heating it and scraping, but the issue with both that and heat use is that you run the risk of melting the fabric.

shas19 · 27/08/2020 23:37

Can you dye it black? You can bye the one that you out in the washing machine or soak it

pguppgdown · 27/08/2020 23:37

If it's plasticky-stick on branding, you will be able to peel it off if you wash it and tumble dry it a few times. Then you will have to carefully pick off the plasticky logo stuff. At least, that's what I usually do with sportwear that has plasticky logos. Once it's been washed again, you can't see where the branding marks were. However, it sounds like there's a lot of it on your garment: I'd consider returning it rather than endure all that faffing.
