Good quality cashmere that is not too expensive

Looking for good quality cashmere at average prices (i.e. not £300 for a jumper). Any recommendations?

How do you rate Boden or John lewis cashmere jumpers?

During autumn/ winter a lot of shop introduce a low priced cashmere sweater. In the last 2 years I've had some from JL and M&S. I think JL is a bit better quality and not much more expensive.

I've heard of H&M and even Tesco doing some cashmere for the xmas shoppers.

I have just bought my DD a second Uniqlo jumper. £69.90 with £10 new customer deal and free postage. It's 100% cashmere and lovely. Says dry clean only but will withstand a cold wash.

Just remembered I have probably botched the sizing though. Argghh. Her current one is a medium so I bought the same, but I have just remembered that I purchased that in a store in HK which will have smaller asian sizing rather than UK. Grrrr. What a pain. I hope it's not massively big. SO, if you go with Uniqlo, watch the sizing!!

LouisaMayAlcott · 27/08/2020 14:06

I bought from cashmere and Co this summer and its beautiful and soft, I would always buy the more expensive brands with a discount code, it's so much nicer. This cardigan is nicer than my N Peal one.

rhianfitz · 01/09/2020 20:43

Orwell and Austin do lovely ethical cashmere that I always wash in the washing machine and it is fine

JFM27 · 01/09/2020 21:29

I buy M&S cashmere Have done for years.Ive jumpers ive had over 20 years

However the ones ive had ages were made in UK,the newer ones are not and though they are pretty good value and beter than many other cheaper cashmere, the older ones produced here are better quality and thicker.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 01/09/2020 21:33

Uniqlo isn't nearly as good as it used to be IME. I've got a cashmere cardigan from Gap that was 30 quid in the sale which I've worn A LOT with no bobbling.

J crew second hand on eBay

Blossomgate · 01/09/2020 22:23

You could try this shop or online. The owner has a real passion for good quality cashmere, saving vintage from landfill, sourced from around the world.

I had a cashmere jumper from H and M. I’ve had it about 5 years and am now retiring it after wearing it at least twice a week for Autumn, Winter and Spring each year.

It is still lovely but it has a slightly soapy feel due to washing which I can’t shift (I did use a wool wash).

HasaDigaEebowai · 02/09/2020 06:59

I have lots of M&S cashmere and it lasts well. Currently sitting here in my M&S cashmere PJs and dressing gown

Mere1 · 02/09/2020 07:54

My best cashmere jumpers are from Pure-sometimes available through John Lewis. Often have sales. They are better than Boden, which I also think are good quality. I have two cardigans from Tesco-surprisingly good. M@S are soft but only ok.

marmiteloversunite · 02/09/2020 08:11

I've got some cashmere from White stuff and I haven't had problems with bobbling. Only a year old though so might still happen. They also put it in the sale quite often.

BeginningBridge · 02/09/2020 08:15

I also rate Lands End - fantastic quality and good value with 40% discount.

beautifulmonument · 03/09/2020 06:34

I think you get what you pay for with cashmere. I have a couple of Brora jumpers that are 15 years old and still look like new. You’re better off with merino if you don’t want to pay Brora prices.

GreyBow · 03/09/2020 07:44

@Blossomgate thank you for posting that 😊

Although, as am aside. How can that Boden biscuit tunic possibly look good on anyone 🤷🏻‍♀️????

queenofarles · 03/09/2020 08:42

Johnstons of Elgin. They are £££ but worth every penny.

J.crew used to do good cashmere , but I think they’ve filed for bankruptcy a few months ago.

I agree that Merino Lambswool is just as good. I. Have some good ones from A.P.C, Ganni .

Mana89 · 03/09/2020 08:51

Agree with J. Crew but similar to @queenofarles it was a few years ago. Does anyone else find that you come back to a good brand a year/few years later and the quality has dropped massively?

I've had good luck with a brand called Grana, and they usually have sales if you're willing to wait and watch.

I also second Pure, but with them it's best if you can see the products in store. Sometimes the quality is great and sometimes it's kinda meh.

Finally - my biggest tip: if you're anywhere near London hit this up www.chicmi.com/event/n-peal-cashmere-sample-sale-london-september-2020/

It's still expensive but I've never been disappointed with anything from them.

eurochick · 03/09/2020 09:13

J Crew filed for bankruptcy? Nooooo.

Although I always found it very overpriced in the UK but bought some great stuff in their US stores.

Blossomgate · 03/09/2020 10:41

Greybow* you are welcome.

I'm very luck, the shop is only a short drive away😍

SpaceOP · 03/09/2020 13:44

I second JL and M&S. I've bought Uniglo before and the quality isn't fab, but to be honest, the price is (or was) much lower so I didn't mind as much.

One day I am going to buy a White Company cashmere dressing gown. Last time I was in there, pre covid, they had a gorgeous cashmere pashmina. But even marked down it was so out of my price range I just had to walk away....

Astrabees · 03/09/2020 16:16

second hand on ebay, good makes - Lyle and Scott, Brora, Johnstons, Pringle etc. I never pay more than £40 and it is way better than the £100 + stuff in M&S, Boden and Jigsaw. My theory is that a lot of it was given as presents and not worn, then sold on because it does have a value. My very best pieces are vintage, I think they were stored for best many years ago and then sold when their owners died or no longer needed them.

AnaViaSalamanca · 03/09/2020 16:48

Thanks a lot everyone, I didn't follow your advice and bought one jumper from Boden (it was 20% off) - horrible thing, very tight and unbelievably itchy. Already sent back.

I will explore the other recommendations then. Brora is great, but I don't like their shapes and colors that much to pay £300. Uniqlo I haven't had good experience with either. The search continues!

Jigsaw cashmere is lovely I’ve just picked up two cardigans in the sale

AuldFox · 03/09/2020 20:57

My cashmere is from Brora, N Peal, Repeat and Johnstons. The older stuff (particularly Brora) is better quality. The size 10 is also tiny compared to current size 10 (this is how I delude myself into thinking I’m still a size 10 Grin)
