What can I do about my weird wavy hair?

SinkGirl · 18/08/2020 22:17

Over the last few years my hair has become increasingly wavy and I don’t know what to do with it.

If I blow dry it, there’s a bit more volume but it’s not wavy.

If if leave it to air dry, it’s weirdly randomly wavy and flat.

Any tips of products for air drying, a hair cut that wouldn’t make me look bonkers etc?

Excuse the odd looking colour in this light, it’s actually mid brown

Curly girl method?

howrudeforme · 18/08/2020 23:25

Lovely hair.

Nighttimefreedom · 18/08/2020 23:30

I think you could take some of the length out and encourage the wave. It looks nice.

JacobReesMogadishu · 18/08/2020 23:32

Curly girl For sure. Get casting, plopping, curl activating cream.....the works.

SinkGirl · 19/08/2020 07:38

I appreciate it might look okay in the photo but it’s definitely very random and flat in real life! I always thought my hair wasn’t curly enough for curly methods but it’s definitely getting that way!

I definitely need a haircut, that’s for sure!

Will give curly girl a go :)

Takings the length out works for me. Mine is wavy but when it gets a mm too long it weighs down so goes flat at the top then sticks out at the end (always seemingly half way through a wave too!)

SinkGirl · 19/08/2020 08:04

What length do you have yours? I’m quite scared of shorter hair after a couple of very unfortunate lobs in my youth - and these days I’m much too jowly 😂 I’ve never found a hairstyle that suits me sadly!

I have hair like this and I HATE it. One celebrity hairdresser did it as curls and I just felt awful, like I wasn’t me.

I ended up getting Yuko straightening and I can honestly say that it has changed my life! I no longer feel like a mess.

I’m just not one of those people who looks good with waves, unfortunately.

foxtiger · 19/08/2020 18:58

I have to say I really like it as it is. Mine is curly/wavy but lacks volume and yours looks like mine does on a very good day!

SinkGirl · 19/08/2020 19:16

That’s very kind of you fox, I think maybe the picture doesn’t capture it 😂 The back / underneath dries in these weird defined clumps of curl, and then as soon as I put a brush through it most of the waves disappear and I just have a frizzy looking mess.

To be fair I really don’t do anything to it - I don’t use products really, or do much of anything, so will try out some stuff and see if it could look better. I wear my hair up 100% of the time as it looks so messy. Will see what I can do. I also don’t have a diffuser so I should probably fix that!

You have described wavy hair everywhere. Grin

Look up wavy girl methods on facebook, tons of advice on those groups.

homemadecommunistrussia · 19/08/2020 22:01

I really like it. You look like an old friend of mine who I always thought was very glamourous.
Maybe don't brush it and stick with a wide tooth comb to cut down on frizzyness...

I am sure you are right, I have no idea what wavy hair is meant to be like, I don’t really understand how it has become so wavy if it’s own accord! I am ordering some stuff now and will see if I can make it look better.

Your hair is lovely and you have the exact opposite problem to me 😊😣

Bored of my hair - any suggestions? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/styleandd_beauty/3999992-bored-of-my-hair-any-suggestions

SinkGirl · 20/08/2020 09:03

Hair is funny isn’t it? I always thought I’d love wavy hair but then you imagine some lovely, regular waves very much unlike reality. Maybe if I actually do something to it, I’ll like it more - I shouldn’t complain about it when I don’t bother to do anything. I really like your hair! Hair is weird :D

I would love a fringe but my face is just the wrong shape sadly

I'm not sure the cut is right for this kind of hair. What does your hairdresser think and have you tried someone who's good at curly and wavy hair? With that sorted the styling should be easier. Also, don't brush it, that never helps Smile

MrsSSG · 20/08/2020 09:10

Your hair is nice! Mine is wavy at the back and straightish at the front. I tried embracing the wave but it never used to look right. I used to get straightening Brazilian blow dries, as I didn't feel like me with wavy hair.

SinkGirl · 20/08/2020 09:17

Definitely needs a cut, haven’t been to the hairdresser since January so definitely needs some attention - I don’t have the time right now but hoping my boys will be back at nursery more soon and I can book something in. I think it’s become much wavier since I last went as well.

Mine's wavy, and looks best if I use non-silicone low-poo and conditioner (Yves Rocher), lots of conditioner then brush with head upside down (I only brush it in the shower when it's soaking wet) and the "squish to condition" (just squishing it up so you start to see a wave) and then I might squish in a bit of gel or mousse (the brand doesn't seem to make much of a difference to me) if I want a bit of hold. All of that with head upside down for volume. I use an old tshirt instead of a towel and preferably air-dry, or diffuse. Touch it as little as possible while it's drying. I use Johnson's baby shampoo once a week to really get rid of any product build-up.

It might sound like a lot when written down, but it really takes me 5 mins in the shower then I leave it to dry. I took on board a lot of the CGM techniques, but haven't gone the whole hog as it's too much faff and I think people with wavy head need to use a clarifying shampoo more often. If I am not going to wash it the next day I sleep with a silk pillowcase. I also have some long layers cut into it.

If you've been using shampoo with silicone it's a good idea to do a clarifying wash to start.

MikeUniformMike · 20/08/2020 19:36

Don't brush it. Use a wide-toothed comb.

Get long layers put in and scrunch it after washing.

You will need a style that is cut to the way your hair behaves.

goose1964 · 20/08/2020 21:35

I use a tangle teaser on my wavy hair, but then run my fingers through to encourage the wave back. The best thing I have found for mine I a good moisturising conditioner

IVORNOIDEA · 20/08/2020 21:38

Fleabag haircut would look brilliant

Her sister’s? 😂

I haven’t ordered anything yet I’m so overwhelmed by it all! Will sort something out today!

It looks similar to my hair. I wash mine, put in John Frieda frizz serum in it while it’s still very wet, then put a wide tooth comb through it and leave it to air dry. I have layers and a fringe. I do straighten my fringe to finish it off. I don’t brush it, and will either run my fingers or a wide tooth comb through it.
