Do flat shoes ever work with a dress and tights?

houstonspca · 03/08/2020 09:53

After lockdown I've decided to ditch the high heels.

I have to look quite smart for work and like to be warm without any bare skin around my ankles, so tend to wear dresses and tights in winter, usually with pointed toe, medium heeled stilettos.

Any suggestions for flat shoes that could work with dresses and tights without looking strange?

Or any other outfit ideas for winter that would mean I can keep my feet and ankles warm?

Boden. These are plain but versatile.

The crease that happens where your ankle meets your foot Greyish smile

I don't get it!! Can you show us a photo?

Squiz81 · 03/08/2020 22:24

I don’t think I’d find those Boden flats very comfy, such thin soles. I do have fussy feet though

houstonspca · 04/08/2020 05:39

Yeah, those Boden flats would kill my feet with that thin sole Shock

Here's some of the dresses I'd normally wear with heels and tights in winter that I'm struggling to find flat shoes for.

Shirt dresses are easier and I think seem to match Chelsea boots or brogues ok, but these more formal/dainty dresses I'm struggling with.

Maybe the answer is new dresses?!

PS I know all about the tights crease! We used to call it the Norah Batty in our school days Grin

@CaptainBrickbeard

I only wear flats and live in dresses. When I had to dress corporate for work, I wore loafers or smart ballet flats which worked fine. Also sometimes flat ankle boots.
Me too. I have heels as well, but not particularly high but of course flats work with dresses.

Really not seeing what the problem is. Ballet flats, Mary Janes will work perfectly well with those dresses

Snowdrop30 · 04/08/2020 08:40

Glad someone has posted this - I have fussy feet too. I hate heels, find ballet flats and pointed flats unsupportive, but find brogues and fitted dresses don't really work...

I just bought these flats from Camper m.camper.com/en_GB/women/shoes/twins/camper-twins-K201082-001?_ga=2.99992350.1000620179.1596541127-1029944579.1596541127 which are really comfortable but don’t look as scruffy as ballet flats (which I hate sorry!). Also square toes prevent your feet being squashed.

Those shoes would be fine with a fitted dress.

There are loads of flat, formal shoes here.

One of Hobbs' main reason to exist is formal work wear.

I also can't get my head round flat shoes. There's no way I would wear those Camper shoes with a fitted dress for instance. I would just feel like I had (eldery aunt) slippers on. I am an hourglass 12 and look and feel best in fitted fairly smart clothes - and heels (not sky-high). I know this is old-fashioned though!

Binterested · 04/08/2020 13:43

I cannot even express how bad those Camper shoes would look on me in a fitted dress. I think you must all be little waif people who would look gamine and cute. I would look like a chunky grandma in slippers.

I have to agree with this.

For me, it's much much harder to carry off ballet flat shoes if you're not wearing a shortish skirt and have long, slender legs. Short women who are thick of thigh (like) me have a much harder time pulling off ballet pumps with skirts or dresses without looking scruffy IMO.

I've got some loafers on today with a shirt dress and feel alright! But this is with bare legs. It's the tights that scupper things, I reckon.

I have got navy and black patent loafers from Next, only about £30 and they always look really smart, either with a dress or skirt. So yes l think they do work x

lindyloo57 · 04/08/2020 14:53

Sorry don't like the camper shoes at all, what about a sling back shoes for spring and summer, or are they old fashion, I have a brand new pair of sling backs, black with Pearl's on the front still in the box had them for 3 years maybe I should sell on ebay.

I absolutely agree. It's all very well people saying you can wear just about any flat shoe with a formal dress but I just don't think some suit it. We don't all suit the same look anyway.

BlueCowWonders · 04/08/2020 15:03

I do think a lot depends on the tights you choose.

I've got a pair of flat shoes they make me look like a traffic warden if i have the wrong tights. I swapped to grey textured tights and felt much more like me!

DidoLamenting · 04/08/2020 15:06

With the greatest of respect OP I do think you are overthinking this. Loads of women wear all sorts of flat shoes with all sorts of dresses and skirt lengths and nobody, to use an MN cliché , "bats an eyelid"

If anything I think there's more chance of getting heels wrong. Also a dressy/obvious/statement pair of heels risks detracting from the dress so it's the shoes which are noticed, not the dress.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/08/2020 15:11

Try different tights. Try a cable tights under your shirt dress and loafers.

8Track · 04/08/2020 15:12

Ooh I'm following this please, I'm also a skirts /dresses and will need flats if I return to the office as my new job means a 20minute walk.

I actually got a pair of m and s loafers which aren't bad - square toed which I think avoids the slightly cutesy look of round toed pumps, although that might work better with your style than mine!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/08/2020 15:13

Those dresses you posted are much more formal than anything I would ever wear, so ignore my suggestions up thread. Would a kitten heel be a compromise?

lampshadery · 04/08/2020 15:37

My personal rule for tights and dresses/skirts with flat shoes or boots:

Above the knee, fine
Below the knee, no.

This ONLY applies with tights.

What about an ankle/Chelsea boot with a block heel? Might be comfort.

(Not sating the above is for everyone, it's just my taste.)

lampshadery · 04/08/2020 15:38

*might be more comfortable, is what that is meant to say
