Hairdressers - toner

I have a bit of an issue with getting my hair done. Have posted before but it’s mainly around transparency of costs.

I may book for a root colour, but end up paying for toner, blow dry etc. It’s like you have to actively (embarrassingly) opt out as the stylist has an almost money no object assumption.

Anyway, what actually is toner? Shouldn’t a colour be enough?

I’m desperate to have my hair done. It needs a cut and root colour. I’m putting it off as I k is it will be another farce of being talked into an all over colour, assume toner is needed (total mystery) and if I don’t want to walk out with wet hair then a blow dry cost.

I’m rambling. Can anyone relate and advise?

Thanks

Gamble66 so is toner basically a semi permanent hair colour in an ash colour/tone? Or is it a completely different type of product? Is there some reason why a permanent ash colour isn't applied after bleaching to prevent the nice ashy tone from fading?

I'd be upfront and say I only have a budget of X if they try and upsell you.

They are relying on you being too embarrassed to make more money out of you

Go to a college or training school with level 3 s the tutor will be guiding them through and can answer your questions too £ not ££££

A toner is a semi with a low peroxide - not always ash but thats the main fashion trend thease days. They are on the whole conditioning, shine enhancing and seal the hair.
A permenant ash over bleach is very damahing plus due to the damge will actually not hold as makes the hair even more porus.

Sporty that’s really helpful thanks.

I don't understand this bleach & the toner - however I have brunette hair. When I have my t - section foils, the hairdresser & I look at the colour book & choose shades from there. My hair will kick out orange, so usually choose the ash based colours.
I have 3 colours 'weaved' in.

Previously the guy was supposed to do the above, but for whatever reason my hair was too orange, so I had to go back for toner, which then washed out. Why can't they hair dresser get the colour take care/time to achieve the correct colour?

In my experience bleaching takes it to a pale yellow bit like banana.

If you're happy with that shade no toner needed.

If you want it more ashy toner needed.

For my platinum shade had a purple toner applied for few mins at the salon. Purple shampoo at home also helps keep away that banana shade.

As a previous poster said, tell her on arrival you “have £x and cannot go over it. What would you recommend so I can achieve roughly the same look as usual?“

If you get full head highlights go for a half head or a t bar instead? That would save some money.

They will try and give you the most luxurious expensive treatment they can if they think that’s what you want and can afford. To some people that’s fab and really makes their day and gives them a boost. To others (me) it’s an unaffordable level of luxury and I pay the bare minimum to achieve my low maintenance look and they respect that. And I give good tips as they are good at what they do.

Until you put them straight they will keep on. After, then they will know there is no point in trying to sell you extras.
