Hairdressers - toner

I have a bit of an issue with getting my hair done. Have posted before but it’s mainly around transparency of costs.

I may book for a root colour, but end up paying for toner, blow dry etc. It’s like you have to actively (embarrassingly) opt out as the stylist has an almost money no object assumption.

Anyway, what actually is toner? Shouldn’t a colour be enough?

I’m desperate to have my hair done. It needs a cut and root colour. I’m putting it off as I k is it will be another farce of being talked into an all over colour, assume toner is needed (total mystery) and if I don’t want to walk out with wet hair then a blow dry cost.

I’m rambling. Can anyone relate and advise?

Thanks

I sound here like I’m there every month! Truth is my hair’s way too long, poor condition and colour outgrown as I’m just so hesitant to book another £££ appointment and be underwhelmed.

Is it compulsory for hairdressers to wear a face shield? I really like my hairdresser but she told me she would be wearing a shield and only wore a face mask. No gloves either. Should I look for a new hairdresser. I was quite anxious. What are the rules?

MrsPerfect12 · 28/07/2020 00:01

My price always included the toner I'm brown with Carmel, I've never not had a toner so not idea why it would be a separate part of the process not really an option.

VanGoghsDog · 28/07/2020 01:06

I'd had foils done four times when she said I should have a toner next time, so this time a couple of weeks ago was the next time so I reminded her she had said it and it seemed to be very much like an extra semi perm colour. She showed me colour swatches for it, painted it on and told me it would gradually fade out.

I had hair bleached at Salon once and a toner was applied...I didn't like the shade so went back and they put a different shade on for free and I was pleased but it didn't last very long and faded in a month..it was redken and couldn't find in shop or on line to do myself.!

KickAssAngel · 28/07/2020 02:04

I'm naturally blonde but get highlights to go lighter. I don't need toner as there's no red in my hair. Sometimes I get it done to go for a slightly different look, but I wouldn't want it every time, so including it would be a top of for me.
I think you need to assume that you will need highlights and toner every time and budget around that.
However, I've never been charged extra for having it dried, that's part of the cut, and my fridge is done once it's dried.

Didyousaynutella · 28/07/2020 06:45

I’ve had my hair highlighted for years and never had a toner until the last couple of years. Now no hairdresser seems to be able to my highlights without one. At mine they highlight. Wash my hair the put the toner. on after. The wash again. It’s a bit of a rigmarole. When I ask if I can skip the toner. They say it won’t look right without it. When I ask how they managed all those years they say it was more acceptable to be stripes the, toner stitches the colour together. I don’t remember ever being stripey. I am not convinced but continue to cough the money up. Luckily I only go once every 4/5 months or so.

Orangesox · 28/07/2020 07:15

I could honestly cry when I think about the money I’ve spent in the hairdressers over the years. Highlights, toners, extra for cut and finish which I’ve always found a bit galling, conditioning masques and all sorts of other treatments.

I’ve a spinal condition that’s put paid to hours in a salon chair so I’ve been growing out an ombré of my natural colour into ash. Recently chucked a dark blond box colour on (Perfect colour match for my roots) and I don’t think my hair has been in this good of a condition for at least 15-16 years.

If my slightly drastic approach isn’t your wheelhouse then you’ll have to continue with the toner to get your desired look x

A toner is basically a purple shampoo! It is needed but it’s a huge con to charge separately for it.

Gamble66 · 28/07/2020 09:19

Toners are not basocally a purple shampoo. Purple shampoos are dposit only colours and can strip protien and moiture from your hair - they are great once a week but no more.
A good toner will add shine and condition to your hair and are applied with a low 1/2% peroxide so no lift but - they should last 4-6 weeks.
Some hair doesn't need them, so e people like warmer tones.
I will often apply a a light/clear toner to damaged hair or hair with a high percentahe of grey as a sealer - it stops the gradual yellowing that some people get especially if they have oily scalp as sebum can yellow even very clean highlights.

Flyinggeese · 28/07/2020 11:26

orangesox sounds good to me! Wouldn’t it be good, though, if there was some middle ground, no nonsense approach at the hairdresser’s?

Maybe it would be good to realise that not every customer sees it as a huge luxurious experience and is willing to ‘invest’ in all these extras. Quite honestly I’d go much more often if it wasn’t such a rigmarole and performance.

orangesox will you still go for cuts?

MsJaneAusten · 28/07/2020 11:35

Have you tried a different salon OP? It doesn’t sound like you enjoy this one much! I’ve tried a few in my town and discovered the ‘stuck down a side street, doesn’t look much from outside’ to be much friendlier than the more glamorous looking ones.

Following lockdown, I’ve realised I can do the roots / semi-permanent glossy bits of my hair myself with a box dye, so I’m going tomorrow for highlights and a good cut, but going to try to keep that to a six monthly treat and continue doing roots/semi myself in between.

Murmurur · 28/07/2020 11:44

I always feel so stupid at the hairdresser's. I have really tried but I still don't know what a colour melt is or if I would want one. Toner being a separate charge is ok I think, as an extra stage needed if hair is lightened.

It does make me wonder how box dye works for blonde though.

My salon includes the price of the cut in the colour price, which helps keep me somewhat sane!

ChrissyPlummer · 28/07/2020 11:53

Jennylinda79 I went last Friday and some staff had visors and one had visor and mask. They wear gloves anyway as they’re doing colour. Never been to a hairdresser who’s put colour on without using gloves.

Flyinggeese · 28/07/2020 12:09

Yes I’ve tried a few over the years. Always frustrated at the knowledge and funds they assume. I just want nice hair!

I had highlights for over thirty years and never had a toner put on, do they only do this in city salons or well know brands salons, I have once went to garner salon in norwich and another city salon I can't remember the name it's a brand salon, and neither used a toner. My highlights came out fine, early days I had nearly white highlights and then light ash lights, my natural hair is mousey brown.

nitgel · 28/07/2020 17:58

My hairdresser uses a lovely rose gold toner, it glosses and protects my bleached highlights. You can get toner in lots of shades. It finishes off the colour. Doesn't really last but you can get a top up. Just wish they were more available in chemists.

VanGoghsDog · 28/07/2020 18:02

No, my hairdresser is in my village, not a chain, privately owned.

tabulahrasa · 28/07/2020 19:05

“I always feel so stupid at the hairdresser's. I have really tried but I still don't know what a colour melt is or if I would want one.”

See, if I don’t know what things are, I ask... but, you need a hairdresser who you’re comfortable with and will just tell you without making it feel like everyone should know stuff.

“It does make me wonder how box dye works for blonde though.”

From experience on really dark hair.... badly, very very badly, lol.

The thing is, I think it’s your hairdresser that’s the issue really, mine tells me what stuff is for... and asks if I want things, and the price for the colour is the price for the colour, that includes toner if needed...

It’s only extra if that is the only colour I’m getting on at that visit.

jeez2020 · 28/07/2020 19:49

A toner is not basically a purple shampoo... that poster needs to get her facts right.

Op... if you're not happy paying for a toner I suggest you ask your stylist what is achievable for you without it... you might not like the answer.

It completely depends on your natural colour, your target shade and the technique used. Most bleach services need a toner because bleach isn't a colour, it's a lightener and a raw bleach look is ugly, yellow and very cheap looking

Oxfordblue · 28/07/2020 19:52

They sometimes call toner 'gloss lights'. I've been given that, it covers the grey (& bumps up the cost)
I have a wet cut now!

Gamble66 · 29/07/2020 14:48

What you want is £200 hair for £20 🤣

Flyinggeese · 29/07/2020 15:51

Correct! Ha!
