Dyson hair dryer-yes or no?!

My hair drier keeps overheating and cutting out so I thought I’d splurge and get a Dyson. I love the Dyson vacuums and fan so am happy they are good bits of kit, but I don't know anyone who actually has one to try!

Do you have one and how do you find it?

No, I had one and sold it, I love my parlux

AliceinBunnyland · 25/07/2020 19:06

I got one last year and I love it. I have curly hair and use it a few times a week to dry my hair with a diffuser. It's faster and quieter than my previous hairdryer and I believe it does less damage. I actually dry my hair more than I used to because I find it so much easier and more pleasant to use.

AliceinBunnyland · 25/07/2020 19:08

I don't have a stand. I don't really want it on display so it lives under the bed.

£300 is a lot. I had a £100 voucher to use DP that helped.

QVC does them on easy pay and also a money back guarantee so you could try it out.

StillMedusa · 25/07/2020 21:21

I have long thick hair and I love mine!
It took a while to get the hang of it though... first few times I used it on full power and turned my hair into a Kate Bush lookalike Grin but now I love it. My hair is a lot healthier as it blows dries quickly on the coolest setting.

Of course it's not worth £300..no hair dryer is, but it is good!

Lilybet1980 · 25/07/2020 21:55

Parlux fan here. My Dyson used to overheat and cut out, so annoying. I wouldn’t get another one and I usually get top of the range everything.

TigerDroveAgain · 25/07/2020 21:59

Crikey, it sounds good. But I have very thick wavy hair and my Parlux is perfect. I thought that was spenny

Chattercino · 25/07/2020 22:13

My SIL lent me hers while she went travelling for 6 months. I initially didn't see the hype but kept using it. When she came home I reverted back to my GHD hairdryer and I lasted a week before I ordered a Dyson of my own. I got it from QVC and I took advantage of the three easy payments ((£100 a month for three months softened the blow). But, FWIW, QVC does a 60 day money back guarantee.

The reasons I like it are:

  • it's light
  • the attachments are magnetic and don't get too hot to touch if you need to swap them over
  • the dry time is considerably less than my other hairdryer
  • somehow my hair seems smoother when using the Dyson

I've got a short hairstyle and use a large round brush to dry my hair, and I do this every day. Maybe that's why it's worth it for me.
HTH

I’ve got masses of thick unruly hair and considered getting one, in the end I decided to get a parlux instead which I love and is brilliant. I do fancy an airwrap though!

tigertreats · 25/07/2020 22:21

I have thick curly hair I need to straighten.
I have been very disappointed with mine and honestly wish I hadn't purchased .
I had an ETI previously which I was told is a salon type hairdryer - had it for yonks and was amazing.
Decided to 'upgrade' - still use the ETI !

Have you got someone you could borrow one from to try or maybe go to John Lewis (our local one does demos of the air wrap - not sure about dryer) . Just because the reviews seem quite mixed and it's a big spend - worth making sure it's really what you want.

Good luck ! Smile

I just bought one this week. My hair is curly and I have to dry it on a low fan and heat setting with a diffuser meaning with a normal hairdryer it can take a bloody long time. So long I end up giving up and leaving the house with half wet hair. I was amazed to find the Dyson took less than 10mins! Absolute game changer for me for when I start commuting again. If you buy directly from Dyson you can try it for 35 days and return if you change your mind so it might be worth doing that. I bought from Curry's on a whim then realised I should have bought from Boots for the points, went to return it to Curry's and they almost refused to take it back as the seal was broken in the box- I'd only lifted the lid, I hadn't used it. Long story short, it's a big purchase so make you you check the return policy for wherever you get it from. Dyson rep In store told me John Lewis was different to Curry's, QVC, Dyson direct etc.

I'm not surprised they might have refused to take it back if you has opened the box Confused

IloveJudgeJudy · 26/07/2020 21:15

I have one. It's definitely worth the money.

I also tried the Airwrap. I wanted to like that, too, but I'm sending it back.

Livelaughwhat · 26/07/2020 21:35

I have one and love it. I’ve shoulder length fine hair and it dries it very quickly. DD who has waist length thick and curly hair loves it too. It has cut her drying time to less than half of what it was with other dryers.

CountessFrog · 26/07/2020 21:37

I also timed my thick hair at 6 minutes!

Myothercarisalsoshit · 26/07/2020 21:41

No I wouldn't have any Dyson products in the house.
James Dyson campaigned for Leave then immediately announced he was moving his base of operations to Singapore. Not an ethical purchase in my opinion.

dontmesswiththeGC · 26/07/2020 22:30

@AliceinBunnyland since when does that mean you can't take something back when not been used or even removed from the box?! Not a returns policy I've come across in any other retailer. Definitely opened a lot of boxes to view an item I've bought then for one reason or another decided to return it - unused and untouched. So Confused to you too.

AliceinBunnyland · 27/07/2020 09:08

@dontmesswiththeGC I thought that was standard. If I'd bought something and there was nothing wrong with it, I just wanted to take it back as I'd found a better deal, I would think that's fine if it's unopened and I'm within my 28 days or whatever. I wouldn't expect to be able to do that if I'd opened it. I thought most returns policies required things to be returned within resaleable condition unless faulty.

lurker101 · 27/07/2020 09:21

I got one as a Christmas gift. I have thick hair and love it. It definitely dries my hair quicker and to a better standard and I use my straighteners less. My boyfriend uses it every morning, I think it’s his favourite gift ever 😂

CountessFrog · 27/07/2020 12:48

Just a point about this hairdryer. I git move for Christmas and by April I felt it had lost power.

I took it back to John Lewis, who pointed out that I needed to clean the filter. They were quite right. It’s back to normal now!

Quarantimespringclean · 27/07/2020 13:02

I also have very thick hair and I have owned just about every hair dryer known to man. I think the basic £300 Dyson is a good dryer. It’s fast and leaves my hair very soft and shiny but it’s not a good styler. I rough dry it to about 90% with the Dyson then style it with the Revlon volumiser or my Big Hair or the Dyson Airwrap or a Babyliss 4 in one styler.

The Dyson AirWrap is good for putting volume and movement in my hair but I find the drying attachment a bit ineffectual and any curls or waves I put in drop out very quickly. I also find that contrary to the advertising it gets incredibly hot.

Is it easy to clean?

Further to what @dontmesswiththeGC said Dyson customer service is excellent. It’s free delivery and If you decide to return it within a 35 day period they will send a courier to collect it at no cost to you. Admittedly buying it from them means you lose out on Boots points but with such an expensive item the freedom to use it for a month and then return it if you don’t get on with it is a useful back up.

sunglasses123 · 27/07/2020 13:30

I have had one for nearly 2 years. Got treble Boots points so effectively didnt pay full price. Definitely not worth the money, I had a Parlux and will go back to that when this dryer conks out.

I have shoulder length fine hair in good condition but do need straightners after it. Its nothing special IMHO.

Having said that it looks great, friends have asked to try it and have said its a bit meh for the price. It also cannot be taken abroad and is heavy, its just the weight is in the handle as opposed to the body.

QVC push Dyson hair products extensively and they are good but remember you will need to send it back at your own cost (circa £25 postage). Maybe look on it as trying it for £25. And they often do Easy Pay instalments which will help forgot about the shocking price. My hairdresser had one given to him but he doesnt rate it either.

CountessFrog · 27/07/2020 15:54

Yes it’s super easy to clean. I just hadn’t noticed!

CountessFrog · 27/07/2020 15:55

(I have a Parlux and I think it’s better)
