35 and no skincare regime

I've gotten this far without one but should I start?
I have naturally balanced skin so don't need to combat oil or dryness and I only wear makeup going out (which I forget to remove Blush) it's just never occurred to me to do anything to it until now.

To add I just don't know where to start, is moisturiser sufficient

I use a face wash with salicylic acid in (I have acne prone skin) a peptide serum which I’m confident doesn’t do very much and then a moisturiser. I find that that’s enough but I think it depends very much on your skin and is a bit of trial and error. I tried an eye cream and thought it made my crows feet look worse!

roastedsaltedpeanut · 09/07/2020 20:31

I would start off with something simple like an oil cleanser to remove make up, foamy facial wash (Because it’s fun) and a milky facial wash for cleansing.
Toning with clycolic acid or any kind of gentle acid is a good idea!
Then serum of any kind
Then moisturiser for day and something more oily for night (essential oils such as rosehip oil, argan oil, or even castor oil depending on what your skin likes!)
Eye cream of any kind
Spf factor 30 at least. Ideally 50
Since you don’t have serious issues to address just have fun with it! Cleanse, tone, moisturise!

Potatobug · 09/07/2020 20:35

So what do you do with your face? Wash it with plain water then splash some moisturiser on it? To me it sounds like a skincare routine.

yellowsunset · 09/07/2020 20:35

I think it's good to kerp things simple so a fragrance free face wash, sunscreen and moisturiser will do. (Along with a makeup remover). Asian companies make particularly good spf which is usually a low price on amazon.

yellowsunset · 09/07/2020 20:38

Most eye creams, serums, extras are pretty useless. The people I know with great skin don't bother with hyped up products.

FranklyDearIDontRiverdance · 09/07/2020 20:40

I use a hot cloth cleanser in the morning, then a retinol tonic cleanser, vitamin C serum, moisturiser and then sunscreen in the summer.

In the evening I use a cleansing balm to take my make up off, then some glycolic pads and then some facial oil or moisturiser, depending on how dehydrated my skin is feeling.

Sounds onerous but it really only takes 5-10 mins each time.

The key is using a flannel when you’re cleansing, it helps exfoliate too!

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 09/07/2020 20:44

I've just started a routine and noticed the difference already. I've got a hot cloth cleanser from aldi, a serum from lidl and a moisturizer also from lidl. Less than £10. I also don't wear make up and didn't have a routine until about a week ago.

TennisButterfly · 09/07/2020 20:47

I use a selection of things from the ordinary and the inkey list.
I wash my face with a cheapo tesco cleanser, then use matryxl, caffeine, them hemp moisturiser. Every other evening I use retinol (if you use retinol you absolutely must use sun protection ) suits me as most are not thick creams more like oils.
All my friends swear by Tropic but seems a bit culty to me so I haven't tried it.
I'm 37 but only started using skincare at 35.

WhiteCliffsBeside · 09/07/2020 20:51

I am very similar! Just wash with soap and water. I don't use moisturizer usually but instead use factor 30 suncream. @TennisButterfly which retinol cream do you use?

doadeer · 09/07/2020 20:58

I'm the opposite of this. I cleanse, acid tone, use serums, oils and moisturisers - I enjoy it, it gives me lots of pleasure in the evening. If you don't love this type of thing...

Use a Cleanser - id say a milk one, morning and evening. Do it twice if you have worn make up. If you discover you like cleansing a gel can be nice in the morning. Always use a clean flannel and warm water.

Morning add Spf

Evening add moisturiser

If you want anti aging Retinol/ vit A is the best. Medik8 is a good brand for this.

Nefelibata86 · 09/07/2020 21:06

I’ve recently started up a routine of hot cloth cleanse, serum , night cream then oil. Then face wash, serum, moisturiser and sunscreen of a morning. Enjoying it so far. Overhauled my collection to use products that are ok with breastfeeding

Cooljoggings · 09/07/2020 21:22

@Nefelibata86 I've been unsure what I can use during breastfeeding so have just stopped! Would you mind sharing your routine and types/brands of product?

SuddenArborealStop · 09/07/2020 21:37

I splash with water that's it Grin I use spf 50 on hot days but I suppose it should be daily. Hot cloth washes sound nice I might start there, it's all a bit confusing to be honest

I've wondered lately if I should be bothering with something. I'm 43 and just wash my face with soap in the shower morning and night and then just smear on a bit of my teenage son's excema cream that lives in the bathroom shelf afterwards 🤣 . I've never really done any different. Any face cream cleaners and that kind of thing wouldn't work for me because I'd just be washing my face in the shower anyway...in the past I've bought nice mosturising creams and washes to try but I just forget to use them or find any mosturisers sting my eyes. Do any of these anti aging products actually do anything in anyone's experience? I've always just assumed skin just gets older as we get older and that's just life and there's bugger all we can do about it...although if anyone's used anything that seems to work I'd be really interested to try it!

FranklyDearIDontRiverdance · 09/07/2020 22:12

Products absolutely can help with ageing and general skin tone.

Retinols and acid toners can help give a glow. Vitamin C serums help with age spots and scars etc.

A lot of the cleansers I use I put on dry skin before getting in the shower (whilst it’s warming up) and then wash off in the shower with flannel

TennisButterfly · 10/07/2020 07:23

Somebody asked which retinol I use.
It's the ordinary 1% in squalene. They do stronger ones but this is still working for now, I have very few lines just 2 or 3 on my forehead, not sure how much is products and how much is luck and genes though.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/07/2020 08:22

My skin was looking really dry and patchy, uneven complexion. My face feels and looks a lot better after a week. I still don't wear make up but it's nice to look in the mirror and see my face looking a bit healthier.

Nefelibata86 · 10/07/2020 10:54

@Cooljoggings
I was guided by advice on the Holland and Barrett website 're ingredients to avoid. Going to start using glossier milky jelly cleanser in the morning when I can find it in the house!, otherwise still using simple facial wash even though that contains an ingredient to avoid as at least that's washed off so I figure isn't absorbed, followed by vichy aqualia thermal serum, moisturiser weleda skin food light and eucerin sun fluid spf 30. Then in the evening hot cloth cleanse with simple purifying cleansing lotion, the serum, eucerin hyaluron filler night cream and then the ordinary rosehip oil. I may use rose water toner in between but waiting to buy reusable cotton pads. Sad to pass on my bioderma micellar water.

FranklyDearIDontRiverdance · 10/07/2020 10:59

@Nefelibata86

I’ve been eyeing up the Vichy serum. Do you rate it?

Nefelibata86 · 11/07/2020 14:26

@FranklyDearIDontRiverdance
It's only been a few days but so far I believe so good. The pump perhaps dispenses a little bit too much at a time. I think something in my new regime is making me break out however and I haven't figured out what!

HarrietM87 · 13/07/2020 15:36

I’m 33 and didn’t have any routine until lockdown. Decided to use some of my gained commuting time to sort myself out! I use cleanser, toner, moisturiser and eye cream morning and evening. In the morning I also add factor 50 spf. It’s made a huge difference already!

Nefelibata86 · 16/07/2020 12:35

@HarrietM87 also noticing a difference with the new routine. Used to think the jury is out on eye creams but I think that's the thing missing from my routine as my eye area crinkles a lot in photos !

Deathraystare · 17/07/2020 15:49

Whaat? No regime at 35??? You are going to hell in a handbasket!!!

AuntMasha · 17/07/2020 20:08

You should use factor 50 every day, even in winter my aesthetic nurse told me. Also you should top it up every 2 hours! 😮

She also said that even if you don’t use moisturiser, using a vitamin C (20%) serum during the day and a retinol serum at night, you will notice an improvement in your skin.
