Hairdresser charging customers for PPE?

Inspiralcarpetry · 29/06/2020 18:19

Mum has asked me to ask for S&B opinions!
Her hairdresser has booked her in for her first post lockdown haircut, but has increased her prices, presumably to cover some losses from lockdown.
She has also told mum she will make an additional £5 charge to all customers as she has had to purchase PPE (mum will need to bring and wear her own mask obviously.) She is the salon owner and prices aren't cheap to start with.
The other issue is she is offering blow dries and mum is worried about an increased virus risk.
I'm a bit perplexed, as my own hairdresser hasn't mentioned any price increases and PPE charges and is so reasonable anyway, he's going to get the fattest welcome back tip from me next week! My hairdresser is clear that their salon won't do blow dries, due to the risk.
Mum will obviously go ahead as she's desperate for a cut, but would appreciate opinions on the PPE charge and also the idea of a blow dry with both parties wearing a mask please?
TIA.

Jeez, they can charge whatever they like.

It's pretty simple, ask them the price when you book, if your hairdresser is charging you more and you don't like it, go somewhere else or cut your own hair!

Gwenhwyfar · 03/07/2020 23:18

"I think this is cheeky. £5 is too much - £1 or £2 covers the cost of a paper mask and a pair of gloves."

It's not just the PPE, it's all the extra costs of having the salon only half full, etc. My hairdresser is doing the same.
Re. blow dries, could they not use those ones that go on top of your head?

The salon I use will now charge me an extra £45. I have a tint and cut/blow dry. The charge is now an hourly rate for technical (colour) and another rate for non technical (cut) colour charges are added based on the weight of colour used. I will also have to pay a portion (30 mins) of an hourly rate for the time in between colour and cut due to the reduction in the customer numbers. Also have to pay a portion of the hourly rate (15 mins) for cleaning at the end. I am happy to pay a bit more but I can’t justify this increase. I’m booked in for two weeks time as I don’t think I’ll get an appt elsewhere right now but I just can’t justify this increase.

£45 is ridiculous

Joiningthegossip · 04/07/2020 01:17

A lot of you are assuming it's a pair of gloves & a mask, it's more than that.

Face shields, Face masks, Gloves, sanitizer, hand wash, disposable gowns, some places are using disposable towels, extra cleaning material, bottled water & disposable cups, also 15minutes will be blocked out after you leave to deep clean, they've also had 3 months with no income so if they are going to charge you an extra £5... so be it.
And some hairdressers aren't adding on PPE charge but they will be putting the price up & not telling you until you pay because let's face it, Tesco doesn't let us know they've put the prices up in advance.
I'm a beauty therapist so unfortunately I'm still waiting, but at one point a pack of gloves was £20 instead of the usual £6, masks £30 for 50, visors £5 each, it really isn't cheap the wholesalers are raking it in.

In regards to Blow drys in the guidelines that have been set out for hair & beauty blow dries are still allowed to go ahead.

And to the OP I'm asking my clients to wear a new mask from my stock so I know it's new and not been worn & risk already having a virus on it.

The salon I go to have increased their prices. It said that they would’ve done in April had they been open.

My usual cut has increased a lot though. I usually pay £12 for a dry cut but they said that they won’t be doing these as per government guidelines (although I’m not sure that there are actually any restrictions on dry cuts?) so I’m booked in for a cut and blow dry which is £35. I’ll be passing up on the blow dry though.

Joiningthegossip · 04/07/2020 01:30

Madison Avenue you can have a dry cut they should just ask you to ensure it's freshly washed before coming in

Mine is still doing dry cuts, its got up by £3-£5, depending on who cuts it, they just ask that it is washed at home beforehand which I always did anyway.
Bettercallgall · 04/07/2020 06:36

My dentist is charging an extra £35 for PPE so £5 doesn't sound too bad.

Sooobooored · 04/07/2020 07:05

I don’t get why some hairdressers will blow dry and some won’t any more.

notearthmum · 04/07/2020 07:11

@LesbianMummies

My hairdresser isn’t charging for PPE but I would be happy for her to do so. I’ll be giving her a big tip after sorting out this mess anyway.

@notearthmum I’m curious as to why 3x the colour?

Sorry, only just seen this! 3x the colour due to the amount of regrowth people will have. People will have gone between 12-20 weeks without having their hair coloured whereas usually it's 4-8 weeks on average.

This sounds very dubious to me. I can't see any reason why dry cuts alone wouldn't be allowed, I suspect your hairdresser is insisting on a blow dry simply as a way of charging you more.

Sunnytimesahead · 04/07/2020 07:20

I can’t see any problems with increasing prices. It is the customers choice to go there or not as long as the hairdresser is up front about the new prices for regular customers.
The salon will have a long list of customers they need to book in. They will be working longer hours and will not be able to have as many customers in the salon each day due to social distancing. The PPE costs will include the additional hygiene measures needed of disinfecting all areas between customers. The whole process will be incredibly onerous now and time consuming. I don’t see it as profiteering at all.

Sunshineandmoonlight · 04/07/2020 07:56

I think a lot of posters don’t know how much a mask that actually is effective. The paper based ones the nhs are currently giving out to everyone who visits and the majority of staff for example are the very base model. A FFP2 mask or n95 in other countries is much more expensive per mask. I think lots will also wear visors which will need to be cleaned.

Hair dressing is pretty close contact really!

Horsemad · 04/07/2020 08:11

I am booked in this morning, colour/cut/blowdry. I can't wait!
My salon has masks for sale but they're not compulsory.

No mention of extra costs, so will be interesting to see what I end up paying compared to normal.

I don't mind paying a bit extra - PPE costs will always be passed on to the customer.
