Hairdresser charging customers for PPE?

Inspiralcarpetry · 29/06/2020 18:19

Mum has asked me to ask for S&B opinions!
Her hairdresser has booked her in for her first post lockdown haircut, but has increased her prices, presumably to cover some losses from lockdown.
She has also told mum she will make an additional £5 charge to all customers as she has had to purchase PPE (mum will need to bring and wear her own mask obviously.) She is the salon owner and prices aren't cheap to start with.
The other issue is she is offering blow dries and mum is worried about an increased virus risk.
I'm a bit perplexed, as my own hairdresser hasn't mentioned any price increases and PPE charges and is so reasonable anyway, he's going to get the fattest welcome back tip from me next week! My hairdresser is clear that their salon won't do blow dries, due to the risk.
Mum will obviously go ahead as she's desperate for a cut, but would appreciate opinions on the PPE charge and also the idea of a blow dry with both parties wearing a mask please?
TIA.

So people expect their hairdresser to provide this additional PPE (which is for both your benefit) and don't want to pay a penny towards it?

Sooverthemill · 01/07/2020 16:07

Our local ones charge £1 to make the online appointment and it covers the PPE

Mmmmycorona · 01/07/2020 16:36

Laughing at hairdressers making money from the pandemic. I have a few hairdresser friends and they are going to be considerably down on takings due to the extra time cleaning and the fact they can’t fit the usual volume of customers in.

And as for them all having had financial help from the government, not true. A few friends hadn’t been self employed long enough to receive any help.

WrinklesShminkles · 01/07/2020 18:41

I'm under no illusion that the prices will go up eventually but that's fine but it's the extra charge each time I go that I object too
You're fine with prices going up but object to an extra charge. So all your hairdresser needs to do is lump the PPE charge in with the overall price, rather than split it out, and you'll be fine with that?

AuntieMarys · 01/07/2020 18:44

I'm in next week...just had email to say its £3 for PPE.

AuntieMarys · 01/07/2020 18:45

The cost of my hair will be about £120

damnitnotlistening · 01/07/2020 19:00

I adore my hairdressers and I get that they have to charge more but the reality is everything has gone up because of this virus.
Everything has gone up except for my wages. I'm having to be very careful regarding non essential spending. I've learnt that having gone 15 weeks with out a cut and colour I can extend my gaps between hairdressing visits. It's not ideal but for me I have no choice. My hair costs just over £90 as it stands. I'm dreading hearing the next bill.

Bella2020 · 01/07/2020 19:51

If these restrictions last for a long while, the additional costs for PPE could really mount up for those with short hair, who need more frequent trims. I used to have a cut & blow dry every 4 weeks when I had short hair.

I've got an appointment for the end of the month (not opening till the 15th here in Scotland) and I've just messaged to ask if there will be a price difference.

MinesaPinot · 01/07/2020 20:37

I've got an appointment in a couple of weeks. They said they won't be able to blow dry and made no mention of charging extra. DH is in a few days before me so he can find out.

healththrowawayx · 01/07/2020 20:47

My salon hasn’t said anything about not being able to carry out blowdries

princessTiasmum · 01/07/2020 21:47

My daughters hairdresser is charging extra for ppe, which she doesn't mind, but no blowdrying,or drinks magaizines,, or use of toilet
I don't think toilet has been mentioned here, but i can understand it

ekidmxcl · 01/07/2020 22:00

I think 5 quid is reasonable for all the extra precautions, which are not limited masks, gowns and gloves. What about extra sanitising etc.

Cut your own hair if you don't like it. I don't plan to go to the hairdressers ever again, nor my ds or dh. We cut eachother's now.

LesbianMummies · 01/07/2020 23:05

My hairdresser isn’t charging for PPE but I would be happy for her to do so. I’ll be giving her a big tip after sorting out this mess anyway.

@notearthmum I’m curious as to why 3x the colour?

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 02/07/2020 01:27

Mine is charging extra (not in UK) - quite a lot extra, my jaw nearly hit the floor but I was so pleased to get my roots done and a trim that I still left a tip! And I left with wet hair because she could only dry it with the diffuser and it would have taken about 3 hours - so I didn't even pay for a blow dry! Will be interesting to see how much it is for just colour and no cut or blow dry.
But there are lots of things hairdressers have to pay for - here they have to supply masks, we cant bring our own. They wear masks, gloves and visors. Disposable towels and aprons for them and clients. Disinfecting everything between clients, and taking fewer clients in the first place. I go to a small local salon with two hairdressers - they are working opposite shifts because they found they couldn't manage the distancing even with only one client each. On the plus side for the they are not serving drinks! They lost loads of money due to closures and are still losing. I do feel for them. Bottom line for me is I'd rather be safe so whatever it takes is fine.

Sooverthemill · 02/07/2020 08:49

It must be very hard on hair and beauty salons because they tend to know their clients very well ( or at least are ace at pretending they do!) so to have to charge extra may feel tricky. But it's not their fault, they've lost a massive amount of income ( many didn't get any government help) . I won't be going to the one in my salon that will only take cash ( but I had already decided that prelockdown as I never have cash and there's only one machine that doesn't always work in our tiny town) and will switch to the ones who take cards in same Salon. I only have my long hair trimmed twice a year at most anyway so it's really no hardship. I hope people continue to visit salons because they need the business

happymummy12345 · 02/07/2020 11:32

Different as not a hairdresser (I don't get my hair done), but I do get my nails and eyebrows done every fortnight. Obviously the lady I go to won't be open until she can be. But she has said that if clients don't have a mask she will have disposable ones available for a small fee on top of the appointment cost.
I think it's reasonable as she has paid to purchase more so she has them available for clients who don't have one.
I don't have a problem with paying the extra for one (though will probably buy my own anyway as I'm a regular client).

onemouseplace · 02/07/2020 18:01

Mine is charging £2.34 per client for PPE which I thought was pretty reasonable.

deathswiftlyfollows · 02/07/2020 18:13

I'm a barber, haven't increased my prices but am charging any client £1 to purchase a mask if they forget one. I've made it clear I will review my prices after a month.
Blow drying is fine, nothing in the guideline about it. And I'll be explicit here-they are guidelines, a 42 page set of recommendations with only one absolute in there and that's visor wearing.

Lauren83 · 02/07/2020 18:15

Mines just charging customers £1 if they don't have their own mask to wear and want one of hers

LaureBerthaud · 03/07/2020 08:35

And I'll be explicit here-they are guidelines, a 42 page set of recommendations with only one absolute in there and that's visor wearing

All the more credit to those who are going above and beyond to protect staff and customers.

LovingLen · 03/07/2020 08:51

Ours have put prices up, to be expected really, my dry cut has gone up from £17 to £20

I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of men don’t go and just cut their own now with clippers especially if money is tight that’s what DH does.

Todaythiscouldbe · 03/07/2020 08:59

Booked DS in at the barbers, prices have increased by between £2 & £5 depending on the service. Totally reasonable, this covers ppe, cleaning time between clients and the online booking when previously it was walk-in only.

Sirzy · 03/07/2020 09:15

@LaureBerthaud

Exactly. I would rather pay more for a hairdresser I was confident was doing everything safely rather than pay the same to go to someone who has done the minimum to open
Sooverthemill · 03/07/2020 09:19

@Sirzy me too
@LaureBerthaud I agree ( awesome name btw, love engrenage!)

BruceAndNosh · 03/07/2020 09:25

My husband won't be going back to barber either so we can redistribute Household Hair Care costs to my barnet!
