Ski jackets

I’ve seen a few ski jackets in the sales and there seem to be some good discounts. Is this a good time to buy or will they be further discounted over the summer?
And does anyone have any advice on ski jackets generally? What to look for/which to buy? Jacket needs to be practical of course but I’d also like something that looks good - without being too out there.

Yes. Its a great time to buy. I like a warm waterproof ski jacket. Somewhere to keep the lift pass handy. Big pockets for gloves etc.

BikeRunSki · 26/06/2020 07:35

Look for one with clip on the r we to it’s to attach your gloves to,so you don’t drop them in the snow every time you take them off.

BikeRunSki · 26/06/2020 07:36

*clips on the wrists

Uhohmummy · 26/06/2020 07:36

Oh brilliant thanks. I wouldn’t have thought about big pockets but definitely need them.
Aren’t they all waterproof?! I’ll double check just in case.

Ooohhhhh ski jacket sales!! Where have you seen good ones? I’m half looking for one...

I like something roomy, with a snow skirt/fastening to keep my back warm and lots of pockets! But I do end with with loads of snacks and spare gloves because we ski with our small child!! I like a hood too for when I’m not on the mountain and hate fake fur - it just goes soggy and yuck!

I desperately hoping my booked at soon as we got back Christmas trip goes ahead this year 😀 🎿

WeveGottaGetTherouxThis · 26/06/2020 07:40

Yes, I would second the need for a pocket in the sleeve for a lift pass.

I usually take a rucksack when skiing, but when I don’t want to, it’s good to have pockets for phone, money etc.

Think about colour...a white one isn’t overly practical as it can get dirty easily, and you would be harder to spot against the snow if you were in danger (unless you have contrasting salopettes).

I really like Dare2Be, but Topshop have great jackets too.

SarBear1980 · 26/06/2020 07:42

Hestra sell the wrist to glove bands separately- which I find is amazing for avoiding the glove drama and opens up more options for coats.

Wow thank you! Some excellent tips here.
Snow skirt sounds good and I agree no fake fur. They seem to be on sale all over the place - Snow & Rock, Ellis Brigham, Net a Porter. But so many look really short, almost cropped. I’d quite like something a bit longer, especially as I’m tall and have a long torso so short on a model will be cropped on me.

I like it to be long in the back so you are less likely to get an exposed back and snow down your salepettes!

ReviewingTheSituation · 26/06/2020 07:52

Another vote for sleeve pocket for lift pass. I just assumed that would be a feature of all ski jackets, but my friend's new Dare2Be one didn't have one. It was a PITA. I'm also a fan of underarm vents.
I guess there must be good deals now as there would have been very little in the way of End of Season sales, as covid cleared resorts out with a month still to go.

I’ve just lost the last half an hour on net a porter now looking at Perfect Moment!! Also saw a bargain or two on Topshop...😀

Dogwalks2 · 26/06/2020 08:45

Your post has made me more hopeful the resorts will open in time for the ski season. I can go without a summer holiday but will be really sad if we don’t get our annual ski get together.

Uhohmummy · 26/06/2020 09:17

Topshop - I didn’t think to look there. Any other recommended brands?

SarBear1980 · 27/06/2020 07:22

My current jacket is Roxy - which I really like as its roomy. Poirve Blanc do beautiful stuff but the jackets are quite fitted in style. My son has a beautiful Spyder jacket we got in last years Snow &Rock sale and there stuff is lovely high quality.

I’m like you @Dogwalks2 keep saying as things get cancelled just so long as we get to ski I’m ok!!

starterfor11 · 27/06/2020 07:35

For brand I like Bonfire or Protest.

CosmoMacaroon · 27/06/2020 07:37

I have a Salomon jacket; I bought it a few years ago now but it still looks good (you mentioned you're tall, I am too and my jacket is definitely long enough). I'm pretty sure it was in the sale too as I bought it in the summer.

I think a lot of jackets have similar features now but I agree re the sleeve zip pocket and choosing a good colour. Most should have vents under the arms or elsewhere that you can unzip and that's a great feature too.

I'd also recommend getting something fairly classic/nice looking so you don't get bored of it or it goes out of fashion if that makes sense? Otherwise in a few years' time you'll want to change it again. Also check that if it has a hood it's detachable - not a deal breaker but nice to have!

Uhohmummy · 27/06/2020 07:41

Yes I definitely want a classic style that doesn’t date. Lots of the styles I’ve seen are fitted and short. Is this a new thing? I’m sure when I last went skiing (pre DC so ages ago) they weren’t as fitted and seemed more practical.

Uhohmummy · 27/06/2020 08:00

Also stupid question but what size should I get? I am a 10-12 (really an 11) but should I size up to factor in layers or are they sized to allow this?

OP posts:
CosmoMacaroon · 27/06/2020 14:53

I'm not sure about them being more cropped now... mine probably sits about hip level (and slightly dipped at the back). I've only ever had Salomon jackets and I think I just bought my usual size but I guess it'll depend on the brand so it's probably better to go and try some on, even if you don't buy one just so you can see what each brand fit is like. You may find you need to go/up down a size, one brand isn't right for you at all etc. Of course it's difficult to go shopping at the moment with COVID (and I guess there's a chance that the shop won't allow you to try anything on anyway, but if you order online you would have to try it in at home and return it so probably not much difference!)

Graffitiqueen · 27/06/2020 16:02

My criteria for a ski jacket are:

Long enough to cover my bum
Nipped in at the waist
Ideally 20k waterproof
Lift pass pocket on arm
Hood that fits over my ski helmet
I like a furry hood trim too

Graffitiqueen · 27/06/2020 16:03

Also second hestra glove wrist straps. Best thing I've ever bought for skiing.

Ginfilledcats · 27/06/2020 16:30

Dare2b and top shop will be more fashion focused and are currently of the shorter style and fitted. For the More traditional style try Solomon, roxy, north face etc

WingingWonder · 28/06/2020 00:07

I am as impressed with my more for show Topshop one than several ski beads over the years
(Unless you’re going somewhere super old...)
Get decent base layers,

AnaViaSalamanca · 28/06/2020 13:36

I wouldn't pay NAP designer prices for something not that high quality- go to more technical brands like mammut (they have a sale now) or acrteryx, north face or patagnia. Go for a good hood that covers the helmet and a bright color
