Birkenstocks...help with sizing please!

I’ve been looking at getting some Birkenstock’s but not sure what size to get. Do they normally come up quite big? I’m a size U.K. 6 and my feet aren’t wide, but nor are they narrow! Do I get my usual size or go down? TIA!

Oh and I want to order online rather than go to the shops, which is why I need to know what size!

I'm a 6 - I get the regular width in 39.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 20/06/2020 14:22

I usually size down. So I'm a size 5/eur38 and wear a eur37 in birkis and since I've done that they've been fine. Some styles are better for me than other. I always wore salina and now in Madrid which aren't quite such a good fit.

gerbo · 20/06/2020 14:25

I've worn Birkenstock's for around twelve years, and am a 6-6.5. Until this year, I've always had 39 regular width, however I think they're making them smaller, as the last time I ordered 39 it was too short! Strange. So now I'm in 40, regular width. (My body shape is just the same, so it wasn't me that changed!)

gerbo · 20/06/2020 14:26

To be fair though, I'd always work 'gizeh' style- the too-small-39s were a new style. Maybe that's why?

gerbo · 20/06/2020 14:26

Worn, not work.

RhubarbRocks · 20/06/2020 14:33

They have a measurement guide on the website that I used (see below and link) and mine fit perfectly. I have always thought I am a 5.5 and usually wear a 39 shoe but came up as 38 for Birkenstocks on this size guide and they are just right.

How to measure your foot length:

“Stand with the heel to a wall and put a measuring tape under your feet
Read off the measured foot length in millimeters before your longest toe
If you are between two sizes, choose the next higher, because feet are minimally greater under load.”
See this link for how the measurement converts into sizes /print it out and stand on it!

That’s really helpful, thank you! I’m after a pair of Arizona’s...will use your measuring guide RhubarbRocks!

I only wear Madrid’s, sizing wise I’ve always found getting my normal size is fine, don’t need to go up or down a size.
Width wise, I was told in a Birkenstock shop that if you have ‘normal/average’ width feet then to get a narrow with.
If you have wide feet you need their ‘regular’ width.

I’ve found that information to be spot on and and having average width feet means I often get good deals on narrow Birkenstock’s on Amazon as they seem to have a surplus to get rid of I’m assuming because most people understandably assume narrow is only for narrow with feet.

This is only for Madrid style thought, don’t know about other styles.

Budapestpest · 20/06/2020 17:02

I’m a very standard size 6 or 6.5 in anything pointy. I have black birks in a size 39 which are perfect but also same style birks in white which are 38 and are perfect. I know that probably doesn’t help!

lockdownalli · 20/06/2020 17:09

I wear Arizonas and have quite wide feet - I wear my usual size 5 or 38.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 20/06/2020 17:16

I’ve found that they’re pretty true to size BUT some styles are more comfy than others, like Juni said above.

I have gizahs which I LOOOOVE; they’re unbelievably comfy. I also have Arizona’s, which are fine, but don’t fit my feet in the same perfect way that the gizahs do.

Also, unless you have any ethical issues, please consider getting leather or suede as the upper. I never loved my Arizona’s, until I tried my sisters suede strapped ones. Way more comfy. Mine are a white fake leather and just don’t mold to my feet the same way. I wish I’d just paid more now and got leather ones!

Startoftheyear2020 · 20/06/2020 17:31

Do they take long to wear in?

Lurkingforawhile · 20/06/2020 17:37

I've been waiting for payday to buy a pair, and now it's here there are no vegan ones left! (Except for the dark red ones, not keen on those)

SuckingDieselFella · 20/06/2020 17:42

I have just bought my first pair. I went a size down and now I'm starting to wear them in they feel too big. Go to a proper shoe shop if you can and ask for advice.

I have wide feet and bought the normal width Arizonas.

il0vew1ne · 20/06/2020 19:15

I bought look a likes from moshula and they are so comfy as the reviews were that birkenstocks needed breaking in.
Moshulas do not they are Would recommend

paradyning · 20/06/2020 19:28

They don't come up big. There is supposed to be a gap all the way around your foot on the footbed. Don't size down. It really boils my piss when people do this. I am so over invested in this.

Shinygoldbauble · 20/06/2020 19:32

I've been on threads where people said they sized down 2 sizes. I've worn them for years and always buy my regular size.
I've never had to break them in.

bluefoxmug · 20/06/2020 19:34

ime they come up large, but the toe part is short-ish.
I have size 7/41 and wear birkies size 39. I have short toes. with long toes the foot-bed ridges would be in the wrong position

Budapestpest · 20/06/2020 19:45

I disagree that there should be a gap all the way round the foot in the footbed. Yes to a gap round the toes so the toes aren’t nestling on top of the raised edge, but no to a gap at the back. They’re shaped so that the back cups the back of the foot perfectly with no gap

paradyning · 20/06/2020 19:49

Your heel should not be touching the back at all. If you look on the Birkenstock website there is an explanation on how they should fit
Budapestpest · 20/06/2020 19:55

I still don’t agree I’m afraid! The back is a lovely cupped shape which perfectly fits a heel into it. No reason for it to be shaped like that if the heel is away from the edge. I’ve read the Birkenstock sizing guide but I wouldn’t change my mind and wear them with a gap all the way round, for me, completely defeats the object of having it shaped

JuniLoolaPalooza · 20/06/2020 20:32

They gave me shocking blisters between the balls of my feet in a 38, but fit perfectly and comfortably at 37. shrug it's what works for you.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 20/06/2020 20:40

I'm a UK 6.5 - 7. I got a UK 7 in the Mayari and they're perfect, even though I have shoes from elsewhere where a 6.5 is too big (looking at you, Moshulu).

Apolloanddaphne · 20/06/2020 20:44

I am a 5 and wear 38. My DD is a 6 and she wears a 38 too (because she 'stole' my black Arizonas!). Go figure!
