Whenever I read threads on here about to be stylish, not 'frumpy', look like you're wearing expensive clothes etc etc. there's always loads of people pile in about how they look for natural fabrics and avoid the dreaded viscose or polyester.

So come on then, link me to some stylish clothes in natural fabrics- where on earth are they because unless you are going to pay a fortune everything seems to be synthetic! Oh, and I hate wool jumpers- the itchiest substance known to man!

Jigsaw IN THE SALE (can’t afford it full price but sale on at the mo)

Monsoon (if you choose very carefully and avoid the 80% of stuff that is flouncy or grumpy or just plain odd; they have some pure linen or cotton absolute corkers if you keep looking)

Uniqlo for cotton and cashmere

Esprit, lots of natural fibres, plenty of nice stuff though some duds.

I also like viscose which is WAY better than polyester and less expensive than cotton or linen. Usually breathes well (and I’m a sweaty person).

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 19/06/2020 14:54

Frumpy not grumpy!!! Clothes can’t BE grumpy, they can only make you grumpy (when there’s too much sodding polyester in them)

Tillytess · 19/06/2020 14:56

Also, happened to be browsing the John Lewis online sale last night and there are quite a few items on there in natural fabrics, cottons, linens, silk, wool. Its worth a browse I would say...

WowLucky · 19/06/2020 14:56

Oh, viscose isn't allowed? I like viscose.

Agree re polyester though but someone must be buying it, it's everywhere.

Budapestpest · 19/06/2020 15:06

I find viscose absolutely fine, nothing like polyester for sweating etc

Elouera · 19/06/2020 15:12

I got linen trousers from asda, and only last week a cotton pencil skirt and linen skirt from Sainsburys which are all cheap, but stylish, natural and cool. I also hate synthetic fibres.

ZaraW · 19/06/2020 15:39

I love Issey Miyake Pleats Dresses, very expensive but look amazing. They are 100% polyester.

styleseeker72 · 19/06/2020 16:43

Viscose is derived from wood pulp, so it's not plastic. It's just the method of making it that makes it not 'natural'.

StarlightLady · 19/06/2020 17:28

Viscose: l echo this, viscose is a natural fabric. Cotton, once picked doesn’t go through a natural process either.

AnnaNimmity · 19/06/2020 17:37

I think Toast has lots of cotton. You can find it if you shop around. I've just found a whistles dress on asos - it's one of the their exclusive ones - as otherwise there's loads of man made fibres in whistles (for not very cheap prices).

I agree OP, I much prefer cotton, (or silk or cashmere). I don't particularly like the feel of viscose and also can't bear wool as it both itches me and makes my skin crawl (in a nails down the blackboard kind of way).

H&M and Cos too.

Baaaahhhhh · 19/06/2020 17:44

Not all wool is equal though..... I search out Merino wool mixes for all my winter jumpers. It's not very easy to find, but bizarrely a couple of years ago I found some lovely merino mix jumpers in Jack Wills. Bought two, and wore them to death, literally. I now need to find new ones.

I find Merino is light, and not itchy (an absolute necessity for mid 50's ladies).

JaceLancs · 19/06/2020 20:52

Tkmaxx
Jaeger outlet
Marks and Spencer still ok for cotton and linen

FreakStar · 20/06/2020 09:03

These suggestions are all well and good- but most of the suggestions like jigsaw/M&S etc- are pretty uninspiring when I look at their websites- Jigsaw/toast/ are full of drab and ill-fitting dresses.

Can anyone link to actual item of clothing they think is stylish in a natural fabric and not ridiculously priced?

I'm looking for a midi-dress suitable for wearing casually or work, pretty blouses to wear with jeans, a longline summer cardigan, some floaty trousers etc.

Mango is a bit of a mix but do some natural fabrics

M+S if you can wade through all the tat

I spend a fortune on clothes (relative to my income), I bloody love it, and I’m not viscose averse. A lot of the slinky stuff (bias skirts and so on) is better in rayon (man-made cellulose based fabric) than silk imho. And I like viscose for softer pieces-it has great drape and recovery. It’s not all made equal, though. Tencel is a particularly nice form of viscose-it’s made from wood pulp and is pleasingly heavy and floppy and smooth.

I like shirt dresses but they have floatier options too

SpringSpringTime · 20/06/2020 09:29

Can’t help you on the cardigan though, I’d not spend under 70 on a knit. You’re probably looking for a wool/cotton blend though. I’m not keen on knitted linen, I don’t like the way it hangs.

Mintjulia · 20/06/2020 09:41

It’s easy to avoid polyester except in leggings, running kit and underwear. Most of my stuff is cotton with some linen. Viscose or tencel work too for more clingy or drapey clothes.

Plenty of cotton or linen dresses, skirts, tops and jeans. Last year I bought from H&M, white stuff, fat face, Boden, tkmax (shorts).
Read the labels as you browse.

StCharlotte · 20/06/2020 09:55

I'm always surprised at the polyester hate. I have no issues with it and don't find it too hot (maybe I'm some kind of lizard freak?).

It's come a long long way since the days of creating sparks every time you turned over in bed!

I have just ordered this.
Zalando is good for online shopping as you can filter on material.

Ginfordinner · 20/06/2020 10:42

Cotton, once picked doesn’t go through a natural process either.

Cotton is one of the most environmentally unfriendly crops to grow. It requires huge amounts of water and pesticides, and as StarlightLady has said, the processes the raw product goes through to make the fabric create so much chemical waste. I watched Stacey Dooley's documentary about cotton production, and found it really shocking.

Mango

BusterGonad · 20/06/2020 10:43

I get my clothes from Esprit (not in uk) all the t shirts are cotton, some are lovely and thin, but good thin not cheap thin. I've recently bought a floral shirt dress made of viscose (which I rate apart from shrinkage if it's cheaply made Mango!) and I've just bought a denim shirt dress which I wore last night and felt great in. I live in a hot country and polyester is a big no. H&M are good for viscose stuff, Mango are terrible. So much polyester disguised as viscose!

H&M can be good too!
