If you have breast implants, I have questions!

Wasn't sure where to post this so apologies if this isn't the right place!

I want breast implants but don't really know where to start. If you have implants...

What material did you go for (saline, silicone, etc.)?
Under or over muscle?
Which shape?
Anything you would change if you could do it again?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated too!

Many surgeons may not mention that they should be replaced every 10-15yrs, so make sure you have the long term cash to do this on a regular basis in future

Even some saline implants are coated in silicone- so don't assume saline as silicone free

Under or over the muscle will mainly dependent on your physique, build and current breast tissue or lack there of

Seek out reviews rather than just going on price. Check whether the surgeon specialises in breasts, or does multiple other areas also and breast are just a small side-line. How many do they do a week/month?

ButtonHogger · 16/06/2020 17:19

Thank you they're some good points to consider!

I don't think saline implants are commonly used in the UK.

As above, look for reviews for surgeons in your area. I specifically wanted one that had a reputation for natural looking results. That is not what everybody wants.

Also, don't be swayed into thinking that going with one of the cosmetic surgery companies will get you the best deal. Going direct to a surgeon didn't cost me any more. They may charge for an initial consultation though, so be prepared for that.

Thank you, I'll try to find some reviews. There are so many places, I don't even know where to start Grin

You can request a referral via your GP to a local plastic surgeon and recommendations help with narrowing down your options. I went through Transform and my surgeon was great but with hindsight I probably would have gone for several consultations rather than go with the first person I spoke to. I didn't meet the surgeon until the day of the operation, its basically a salesperson that you have a consult with first if you go with the MYA/Transform/Harley Street 0% finance clinics.

I have had implants for 17 years, I've had no problems but it took a good 6 months for them to settle in. Mine are over the muscle, I was 32a and I'm now 32e. They're awkward to dress, people are always talking to them rather than me and they're bigger than I would have chosen but that's because I'm not in my early 30s anymore and I've put on weight. I have a wide chest so no natural cleavage, however they sit well on my chest and dont look too oversized. Waking up after the surgery it was very painful and I couldnt lift anything for a few weeks after. I couldnt have hidden my new boobs, it was obvious I'd had

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/06/2020 19:45

Had first ones done under the muscle around 13 years ago.Had them redone in January over the muscle. They were both silicone.Under the muscle takes longer to recover from and imo feel more unnatural I prefer the ones I have now.
I went from 34a to 34d first op.34d to 34e second op.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/06/2020 19:47

Make sure you choose a reputable surgeon, one who is a member of B.A.A.P.S preferably. If you are in Yorkshire Mr Morritt at Claremont Private hospital is brilliant

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/06/2020 19:48

You'll need minimum of 2 weeks off work.I had 3 weeks.

Bananajam · 16/06/2020 19:49

Clicked post before I'd actually finished typing... it should say, it was obvious I'd had them done!

I've been lucky, I know people have had issues with rippling and puckered skin, infection and leakage. I havent needed them replacing but it is a major factor to consider, I paid £5k, I dont know what the cost is now. It's a long term investment and it doesn't necessarily mean you'll be happier post surgery. It took me a while to adjust to my new figure. Ask lots of questions, talk to lots of people and good luck!

Kittykat93 · 16/06/2020 19:53

My nipples have no feeling some days, other days they are ridiculously sensitive to the point of being painful.

I think they look really good though, and I don't regret them. If I could go back I'd still do it again. It's given me a massive confidence boost and 6 years later still feel the same.

Kittykat93 · 16/06/2020 19:54

Whoops sorry forgot to say I went over the muscle, silicone and round shaped.

Skade · 16/06/2020 19:54

Mine are 20 years old this year and I spoke to my Consultant Michael Graham (Dorchester NHS breast surgeon) 10 years ago about whether I should have them replaced - it was back at the time of the PIP implant scandal and I called him to check if that's what mine were (they weren't). He said that if they weren't giving me any trouble I would be better off leaving them than messing about replacing them. They have been fine ever since, no issues whatsoever. I trusted his judgement because I thought he was basically turning down another £4k by telling me I didn't need them doing!

I had silicone implants done under the muscle as I had hardly any breast tissue (34AAA) and although they were quite painful for a week or so I have had no issues with them since then. I have been really happy with mine, in fact 4 members of my extended family have also had them done with the same surgeon and been happy with theirs as well.

sekactao · 16/06/2020 20:24

Thank you, I'll try to find some reviews. There are so many places, I don't even know where to start

What area do you live in?

chubbyhotchoc · 16/06/2020 20:44

They only do under the muscle of you have virtually no breast tissue to cover an implant. Check they are registered. Join uk plastic surgery groups and get recommendations. Then join the botched groups and check on them there.
Take actual naked boob photos with you to show what you want the end result to look like naked m. I should have gone bigger than I did. What one implant looks like on one person looks totally different on another.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/06/2020 21:29

Also no reputable surgeon will tell you what cup size you will end up with he/she should say they are going to wait until you are in theatre to see which volume of implant suits your body.If they say you could go up to 2 sizes bigger then fair enough but to say oh yeah you will be a 34dd at the end.No.

ButtonHogger · 16/06/2020 21:49

sekactao I'm in Merseyside

@ButtonHogger check out Lee Martin or Se Hwang Liew both very experienced.

ButtonHogger · 16/06/2020 21:53

Really appreciate all of these tips, thank you everyone!

Never thought of checking out the botched groups too, will do that!

So at least now I know that because I do have a bit of albeit saggy tissue, I can't have under the muscle!

OP posts:
ButtonHogger · 16/06/2020 21:54

...Which will also mean (hopefully) shorter recovery time!

OP posts:
ButtonHogger · 16/06/2020 21:54

Thanks Chubby will do that now!

chubbyhotchoc · 16/06/2020 21:58

The group on Facebook is called Victims of Botched surgery & malpractice Uk and abroad. I wish I'd found it before I had a tummy tuck because the guy who did it was recommended on other groups but when I went on that group I found he had more than 20 lawsuits against him.

rainbowcakes · 16/06/2020 22:09

Had overs (round) in November 2014, I think they were 365cc. Went from a 32A/B to a 32DD.

Absolutely the best thing I've ever done. I found the recovery really easy and didnt really feel any pain (the painkillers were brilliant, i was high as a kite 🤣) the worst bit was having the strapping taken off after a week or so! I think they look natural and in proportion with my body.

Unfortunately, since having my first baby last year, the right one has gone quite firm (dont know if pregnancy caused this). It is a bit uncomfortable sometimes but not really painful.

Went to the GP who referred me to the breast clinic at the hospital appointment at the beginning of lockdown and they confirmed capsular contracture. However, they reassured me its not dangerous and I'm fine to leave it as it is. It doesnt look any different to the other implant and isn't affecting my quality of life so I'll hold off for a re-op. I was hoping to make it to at least 10 years before replacing them Grin unfortunately i am well out of the warranty period! (3 years)

I went with MYA and they were fantastic from beginning to end. I will definitely go with them again next time. I had a consultation with transform, but the patient co-ordinator refused to answer my questions about what would happen/what was covered if there were complications so i discounted them instantly.

sekactao · 16/06/2020 22:27

I had overs and didn't have any pain to speak of. I didn't need the painkillers they gave me. I was pretty much back to normal after a week.

As far as I am aware, apart from DH, nobody is aware that I've had a boob job. They look totally natural.

lazylockdowner · 16/06/2020 23:04

I have saline, had them nearly 15 years. Under muscle (didn't get choice as I was very flat chested that's where they had to go, surgeon told me they only go over muscle if there is excess skin to fill after breastfeeding/weight lose etc.

Round and only thing I would change is I would go bigger, I'm a 32D but they really don't look that big they are more rounded that sticky out big no one know or can tell I have implants unless I tell them

sekactao · 16/06/2020 23:25

surgeon told me they only go over muscle if there is excess skin to fill after breastfeeding/weight lose etc.

I doubt my surgeon would agree. I didn't have any excess skin to fill at all, just normal looking, quite perky breasts. I just wanted the same again, but bigger. That's exactly what I got.
