Any users of Altruist SPF50 suncream?

I have been using Altruist SPF50 (Amazon) religiously for the last couple of years, and have had a lot of hyperpigmentation / melasma appear on my forehead and cheekbones. Could there be an issue with Altruist not working properly?

I have not had any other hormonal changes to cause this and am positive I am using enough of the suncream. I run outside regularly and wear a cap as well to protect my face.

I have decided to change my sun protection just in case, but interested in any opinions!

Just a warning, I bought 2 bottles of Altruist spf30 sun lotion off Amazon to wear in Lanzarote last year. I decided to try it after it was recommended on here.
Well I got so sunburnt!!
I'd applied it properly all over as usual.

Luckily the Spanish version of my usual choice Ambre Solaire spf30 was in the local supermarket.
And I'd worn my usual Boots No7 facial sun lotion so my face was fine.

I don't know what went wrong, maybe it was fake, I threw it away so I wouldn't have to carry it home but should have reported it to Amazon.

Maybe the one you have is fake, or old stock? I would definitely stop using it & see if you can get a refund.

That's weird you say this ... I purchased some from Amazon about a month ago after seeing rave reviews here. Like the pp wore it running but forgot my cap. Put it on the next day and that evening I swear I had some pigmentation on side of my nose I'd not noticed before Confused

Would there really be fake stuff on there? Gutted as thought I'd found the holy grail of protection vs price.

I'm binning it now!

I was going to buy some of this from Amazon earlier in the year but read some awful reviews which put me off. It seemed unbelievably cheap and there were a lot of 5 star reviews that just seemed fake as well. Glad I didnt buy!! Stuck to the trusty LRP. Really sorry though OP that that's happened to you. I suppose there's no way of knowing it was definitely the Altruist but I would definitely switch to a trusted brand.

EducatingArti · 15/06/2020 22:25

I've used Altruist SPF 30 and it has been fine. If you think it could be fake buy from their own website rather than Amazon?

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/06/2020 06:48

TBF it never occurred to me there may be fake stock on Amazon. I know to shop more carefully in future!

MoltoAgitato · 16/06/2020 09:32

Fake stock is possible - there was a thread on here about fake Biore Aqua Resist suncream the other day, also bought from Amazon.

Stumpedasatree · 16/06/2020 10:22

I don't know about fake stock, just that maybe the product doesn't do what it claims?

I'll stop using it, only just realised this was most likely the issue.

La Roche Posay Anthelios have an anti pigmentation range OP if you are looking for an alternative

withlotsoflove · 16/06/2020 16:07

Amazon are the official stockists for Altruist.
The price point is too low to be copied anyway!
The Japanese sunscreens have a cult following - even though they are cheap to purchase in Asia... so a market for fraud.
The Missha BB cream is another one that is regularly faked...

IsMiseMorag · 16/06/2020 16:36

Oh, bollocks, really? I've just got some SPF50 for my face and SPF30 for the family, after reading the Sali Hughes recommendation.

Back to Ultrasun/Soltan...

withlotsoflove · 16/06/2020 16:47

I prefer a mineral SPF, but Altruist is very well regarded in the skincare community.
I used it a couple of years back - actually we still use it on the body here! It’s a great product.

Stumpedasatree · 16/06/2020 18:37

Try it for yourself @IsMiseMorag, it might just be my odd skin!

My FIL was recommended Altruist by his dermatologist after he’d a a cancerous mole removed from his face. I use a different (very highly recommended) SPF and still get the odd pigmentation mark.

barberousbarbara · 16/06/2020 20:13

I use it and have never had any problems

danuta22 · 16/06/2020 20:54

i use Ultrasun antipigmentation, and would recommend it

amusedtodeath1 · 16/06/2020 20:59

I've been using it for a couple of years now and no problems at all.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 16/06/2020 22:26

I use la Roche posay factor 50 and have noticeable pigmentation around my eyes and forehead. I buy it from Boots so would be surprised if it was fake. I read on here that it could be due to being on hormonal contraception long term. I think some people are just very prone to sun pigmentation even with sunscreen.

alexdgr8 · 17/06/2020 01:22

i find Lidl and Aldi suncreams and other cosmetics very good, and reasonably priced.
but perhaps some people are expecting too much of a suncream.
it's always advised to cover up and avoid the middle of the day and any prolonged exposure. as well as using a high factor sun cream, and re-applying frequently.

kingkuta · 17/06/2020 06:25

I think that if its melasma as opposed to skin pigmentation then sunblock is probably going to be less of a factor as, although it can be triggered by the sun, it seems to be more of a hormonal response, hence how commonly it appears in pregnancy

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 17/06/2020 15:57

I'm definitely very cautious with sun exposure. When I had problems with Altruist it was after wearing it with a cap, to run at 7am. Then after popping more on after a shower, to do weeding in the garden, again wearing a hat, at about 10.30.

I've used the LRP one, Clarins face SPF (both factor 50) with no issue.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 17/06/2020 21:22

We were recommended it by a consultant dermatologist for husbands sun sensitivity caused by lupus. It seems to still be ok, I got accused of selling it when I mentioned It on here HmmConfused

Stumpedasatree · 17/06/2020 21:34

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz thank you, exactly the same here. I'm not going to be using it anymore.

This is interesting. I bought the SPF 50 after reading about it on here. Will keep an eye on it and see if anything happens.

kingkuta · 18/06/2020 12:27

There are some really bad reviews on Amazon with a large number saying they burned. It contains known allergens and Aluminium as well so wouldnt use it on that basis. I'm really suspicious of products that are so cheap, probably unfounded but when you're talking about something as important as protecting your skin I'd rather be sure. I use AHA/BHA and Retinols so I'm not going to take any chances where sun protection is concerned

AhBallix · 19/06/2020 00:19

I've been using Altruist SPF50 for over a year and honestly haven't burnt once - not so much as a pink glow.
