Is it worth it? I don’t use one but I’ve been reading lots about them.

I recently bought nip fab retinol night cream because I'm 45 and heard it's supposed to be fab. Can't say I've noticed a difference over my usual night cream just yet ! I've ordered the vitamin C set though to try that too.

ParadiseLaundry · 07/06/2020 07:39

I use the 0.5% retinol in squalane from the Ordinary and have definitely seen a difference. I did start off slowly but didn't have any sensitivity to it like some people do (even though I have quite red-prone sensitive skin). I saw results reasonably quickly from it I would say too.

Boldercakes · 07/06/2020 07:45

I use A313 (£14 on Amazon) now. I used the ordinary in squalane before but the a313 really made a difference. much smoother skin after 3 months and my hormonal break outs largely stopped (I am mid 40s).

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/06/2020 09:28

Yes, I use ordinary 0.2% in squalene 2 drops every other night but I’ve just started dermatica for hyperpigmention.

I still plan to use it on my chest and neck.

revelsandrose · 07/06/2020 09:32

I've started using retinol serum, night cream and eye cream, I don't normally have sensitive skin but I did have a little bit of warmth to my face for the first few days. It's definitely worth it though, it's only been a couple of weeks and my skin feels smoother and more "plumped" don't think there is any visible difference just yet but hopefully after a few more weeks 🤞🏻 I'm 42 by the way.

Franticbutterfly · 07/06/2020 09:32

My skin is just too sensitive for it. I have enough trouble maintaining my barrier function and keeping hydrated, it's just not worth it to me. I wish I could use it but even No7 protect and perfect ruins my face. I think that once lockdown eases I'm going to get botox.

I just started this too, but with the 0.2%. Similarly I've not had any reactions to it yet, though I've only been using it every third night to start off.

Tinks15 · 07/06/2020 13:09

Thanks everyone really helpful.

I’m guessing the ordinary would be the one to try first? Which one should I get the 0.2 or the 0.5 to start with?
Also I know this sounds silly but I use rose hip oil every night as my moisturiser, can I still use this after I’ve applied the retinol?

Sadbridetobe · 07/06/2020 13:11

Can you use this at night then your regular moisturiser in the morning? And is this the product you need to always use sunscreen after? I know you’re meant to anyway but I don’t Blush

Tinks15 · 07/06/2020 13:24

@Sadbridetobe - I use an oil free gel moisturiser in the morning (my skin can’t tolerate normal ones they just clog my skin up). I love my rose hip oil so wouldn’t want to give that up & I can’t use that in the morning as it’s too greasy so that’s why I put it on at night.

OP posts:
Bertyb7 · 07/06/2020 13:32

You should apply moisturiser and retinol (it is not instead of moisturiser) I have bought the 0.2 and the 0.5 as I heard it's good to build up. I am currently on the 0.2 with the plan to move up to the 0.5 when it's finished. I have noticed a difference

Tinks15 · 07/06/2020 13:38

So I would use the retinol & then the rose hip oil? Sorry I’m rubbish at things like this Blush

Hi

I am recently new to this. After lots of research on the whole thing and wanting to revamp my skincare routine, without too many confusing products or money. I’m 41 with sensitive skin. In the end I’m using The Ordinary Buffet hyaloronic acid in the morning before my usual day cream with SPF. In the evening I’m using The Inkey List retinol serum, followed by my usual night cream.

Stinkyjellycat · 07/06/2020 14:23

@Tinks15

Yes that’s right. If you look on their website the are example regimens and one includes exactly this.

cicatrix1 · 07/06/2020 17:08

I use the 1%in squalane the ordinary. I built it up over around 3 months.I can't say I notice much of a difference.

My skin can be quite sensitive,it never really irritated me though...

I'm 55 first time using retinol.

lindyloo57 · 07/06/2020 17:53

I had been using the ordinary retinol for over a year, when they first started, then around 18 months ago brought the strongest retinol, the stuff you get from a doctor, in spain you can get it over the counter for
around 16/ 17 euros, its called retirides in spain. Had to go slowly with it, even though I had been using the ordinary for a while, I use it four times a week and always put moisturize on top if not I will peel.

ParadiseLaundry · 08/06/2020 09:33

Tinks, you would usually use retinol, moisturiser then your rosehip oil. Although when you are first getting used to the retinol you may find it helps to apply it after your moisturiser to avoid sensitisation. You may find that you don't feel like you need the rosehip oil as the squalane has quite an oily feel to it.

Tinks15 · 08/06/2020 10:27

Thanks @ParadiseLaundry - I just don’t know what to do or whether I even need retinol.

I really love skincare but I’m useless at it, I find it so confusing i.e what you need & what you don’t. The fact my skin reacts to a lot of things makes it harder.

OP posts:
ParadiseLaundry · 08/06/2020 11:08

Ah I know, it's such a minefield and it's even more complicated by the fact that what works really well for one person can have no effect or make the problem worse for someone else!

How old are you? The good thing about retinol is that it can help many different problems such as wrinkles, skin tone and acne. It's definitely worth a try I would say and starting with the 0.2% sounds sensible. If you don't mind me saying though I would probably try to add in a moisturiser as the retinol might dehydrate your skin a little and the added moisture (rather than just the oil which is great for sealing in moisture) might benefit your skin.

Tinks15 · 08/06/2020 11:35

@ParadiseLaundry I’m 29.

The gel moisturiser i use in the morning is quite light so I don’t know whether that would be enough to use at night after the retinol. I seem to find the gel ones work for me best, finding a creamy one that suits my skin is such a headache. My skin is a pain in the arse!
The 0.2% was what i looked at last night but seems to be out of stock everywhere.

Sadbridetobe · 08/06/2020 11:56

I’m waiting on an order from Look Fantastic thanks to this thread! I went for The Inkey List serum with retinol and got a new cleanser etc.

Sadbridetobe · 08/06/2020 12:02

Skincare is really totally overwhelming isn’t it?!
My plan is to start the retinol once a week after cleansing then use my usual moisturiser.

I also want some sort of peel but no idea where to start!

ParadiseLaundry · 08/06/2020 14:17

@Tinks15 I would have though your gel moisturiser would be fine over the retinol especially if you are adding the rosehip on top of that. You could always get the 0.5 retinol and just mix one drop into your moisturiser once a week while your skin gets used to it.

I've heard great things about the Inkey List sadbridetobe, but everything I fancied was out of stock!

Tinks15 · 08/06/2020 14:26

Thanks @ParadisdeLaundry maybe I’ll do that then & just use it once a week.

@Sadbridetobe I’m going to take a look at the Inkey list I’ve seen the name a few times but don’t know much about it.

OP posts:
Sadbridetobe · 08/06/2020 17:40

I’ll use the Retinol tonight and see how I go. Having had a look on their website I’m now keen to get some hyaluronic acid but the Inkey one seems to be out of stock everywhere.

My main problem is dryness so I want to focus on that as well as trying to reduce redness too.

A couple of months ago I started doing daily HIIT workouts and it seems to have taken a toll on my skin. I’m very spotty on the sides of my face at eye level if that makes sense. Hopefully some of this new gear that arrived today will help!
