Any of you have tried cutting your own hair using this method? I am purchasing hairdresser scissors today!

Yep - I use this method and it always come out great.

I tend now to go once a year to a salon, then do this every 8 weeks or so in between as needed. The hairdresser is always impressed at the condition of my hair given she only sees it once a year. This method gets rid of all the split ends etc.

The only thing you cannot achieve with this cut is a blunt level across the hair. It naturally cuts it on a curve (shorter at the sides longer at the very back) but it's not a dramatic curve.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/06/2020 09:26

Oh and you have to make sure to snip up into the end of the ponytail once you've done the cut until it's no longer blunt.

Smellbellina · 06/06/2020 09:28

Yes I have, it was good. Only thing I didn’t much like was the curve as I like a blunt cut but it was still definitely better than no cut at all.

BloggersNetwork · 06/06/2020 10:41

Oh no I really don't want a curve

I did this for about 3 years when I couldn't afford haircuts. It was good, and looked like a styled haircut rather than a hack, but it was really really long at the back... As I have really really thick hair it was pretty bulky.

Have a hairdresser now, but would definitely do this cut again if my hair was getting out of control during lockdown.

Ohnopoo · 06/06/2020 11:02

Yes I did this for my daughter-it actually looks pretty good.

Villanemme · 06/06/2020 14:25

Omg! Did this this morning. Look like Pat Sharpe from the 80s! Took 10 inches off. The back's still long but I have a 3inch fringe. Haven't had a fringe for 25 years... Meant to be returning to work in two weeks, no frickin way!! 🤣😱😱

Throughabushbackwards · 06/06/2020 14:36

I've just done it this morning for the second time since lockdown. I have quite long hair (to my waist) and like pp said, it doesn't seem to shorten it much at the back but it makes some nice long layers and seems to freshen up the ends.

missmouse101 · 06/06/2020 15:00

Yes, I do it and the front comes out fine, in layers, but the back doesn't get touched at all which is disappointing.

Kenworthington · 06/06/2020 15:02

Yes I did. Ended up looking like rod Stewart. I don’t think I’ll do it again

BobbinThreadbare123 · 06/06/2020 15:07

I used to do this when I was too skint to go for a salon appointment. I have curly hair and it was mid-back length. Worked really well for me, but I think the curls help this type of cut. Hard to see a mistake in curly hair and one should avoid a blunt cut or it's a bit heavy.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/06/2020 15:42

Yeah that's a lot to take off in one go! I usually do 2inches (hair is bottom of shoulderblades length)

DC3dilemma · 06/06/2020 15:49

I’ve done mine, it looks good.

Make sure you bring the ponytail smoothly into the middle of your forehead, not sticking out the top of your head.

Just take a couple of inches. Less is definitely more.

Think about the angle of the cut you make, it really changes the extent of layering. I cut a near straight line and just have slight layering the bottom few inches; I didn’t want particularly short layers.

DC3dilemma · 06/06/2020 15:53

Some excellent videos here:

I actually did the unicorn cut, then followed with the bunches method to get a cleaner cut on the bottom and close the gap between the overall length and the shorter layers.

Really pleased with it and may never visit a hairdresser again!

Shelleymoon · 06/06/2020 15:59

I tried it a while back. Came out OK but I wouldn't do it again. Didn't like all the long layers.
But in an emergency....

MimsyBorogroves · 06/06/2020 15:59

I really what to try this.

I cannot do anything with my hair.

How badly wrong could this go?!

Roomba · 06/06/2020 16:00

I did this a few times years ago, with my waist length hair. The only thing I'd say is do not cut too much off - cut far less than you think, check and do it again if needed. Learned that one the hard way Grin

It looked good when I did it, although my hair is quite fine so the ends looked a bit too thin on me.

hammeringinmyhead · 06/06/2020 16:05

I do it, but further back on my head for longer layers. And it's curly. And only 2ish inches!

Crystalspider · 06/06/2020 16:07

Yes I done this but only a few mm nothing drastic just enough to stop split ends getting worse.

rainrainpleasestay · 06/06/2020 16:11

A few months before lockdown I went brunette after years being blonde. I'm naturally mousey brown but my roots are now grey/white. The brown has maintained well during lockdown but I've noticed my ends are quite blonde. Will this cut get rid of that?

LadyFeliciaMontague · 06/06/2020 16:20

Thank you for saving me from myself! I had been debating attempting this for a couple of weeks but won’t bother now.

If you want a blunt cut- this one is great. Used to do the unicorn style but this one is much easier!

ILoveJoeBrown · 06/06/2020 16:27

I use this method all the time. However, I do like layers and a curved back so it suits me fine. The trick with fringes is to take the ponytail right out - well past where your fringe (or shortest layer round your face, if you don't want a fringe) would be. Otherwise, your fringe will be the length of the ponytail and you'll have lots of really short layers plus very long at the back, which is not a great result.

Haven't worked out the best way to trim the back though. I tie bunches really low down, then tie the bunches together in front of my neck and cut across, but hair is still very long at the back.

ILoveJoeBrown · 06/06/2020 16:30

I should add that I have thick wavy hair so I'd never get a straight across line at the back anyway!

Nonestopcaberet · 06/06/2020 16:39

Was told yesterday that my hair is ‘gorgeous’. Not been to a hairdresser for a couple of years now, always use this method. Works well as I love the long layers it produces.
