Any of you have tried cutting your own hair using this method? I am purchasing hairdresser scissors today!

I did it in 3 takes. Not sure why I didn't notice the front getting shorter and shorter...

Hi! I did it last week in one take. My usual is to have layers as I have slightly curly hair. It actually fixed the awful haircut I got at the hairdressers in February. I was trying to grow it out but it wasn’t working so I was googling diy haircuts.

I've been doing it during lockdown. The last time i went to my hairdresser i ended up with a bob, which is fashionable but doesn't suit me. I prefer how the front is with the ponytail cut. I cut it level with my mouth so it's not too short. It doesn't cut the back as my hair isn't long enough for that yet. I may get my teenage daughters to cut the back if it starts to get tangly due to lack of cutting

I do this whenever my hair needs a cut it's great. I recently done the double unicorn cut which I absolutely love and it will be my new go to!

I second the Brad Mondo method linked upthread. I did it last week and it came out brilliantly.

I had a bash this week... it's pretty 80's but not as terrible as I thought when I'd just done it. I wasn't expecting the fringe, but I've been asking my hairdresser to do one for ages and she always refuses (probably with good reason!) so I'm not unhappy. I'd like to take a bit more length off, especially at the back - but I'm going to quit before I really end up looking ridiculous.

I did it for my dd. Result was really good. Slightly uneven layers as she doesn't have a central parting, but not enough to be noticeable unless you look really hard.

I'm willing to let her have a go at mine soon.

Jeremyironsnothing · 06/06/2020 20:19

Oh and we just used normal kitchen scissors.

Be careful. A little at a time
My friend did this cut for a while. The first was not too bad but as it progressed it turned into a proper mullet
If you want a mullet crack on Grin

That looks nice 20:13JofraArchersFastestBall

I’ve been using it for 10 years now. My hair is quite wavy and grows quickly so it’s hard to see imperfections of which I’m sure there are many!

Channelling Suzy Quattro from the 70s! Not brilliant but taken loads off and only took 2 mins. (Yes, yes, you can tell I know 🤣)

From yesterday's Pat Sharpe it has calmed down considerably....

Enderthedragon · 07/06/2020 15:13

I used to do this, but to be honest it only really works if your hair is already quite long and you are only taking a small bit off, otherwise the layers at the front are too short and that when you get the Pat Sharpe look!

MollyAtTheFolly · 07/06/2020 15:19

I used the Brad Mondo method yesterday and it worked pretty well. Reasonably straight all the way around (except one of the back bits which my husband did - it's his fault, not Brad's Grin)

tiredvommachine · 07/06/2020 15:27

Off topic but I love Brad 😍

AvocadoPrime · 07/06/2020 16:45

How are people managing the brad mondo by themselves?!

MonaChopsis · 07/06/2020 22:44

Yeah my hair is incredibly thick, so the Brad Mondo method wouldn't work for me. Hadn't thought of doing it at mouth level, can see how that would work nicely, probably shorter at the back too. I used to tie it tight on my forehead, hold the unicorn horn with my fist and tie another hair tie at the other end of my fist, then cut directly above that second hair tie. First layers fell just above my jaw.

Callo · 09/06/2020 17:38

I got my teenage daughters to cut the back today (joint effort) as it doesn't reach into the ponytail cut and was starting to get tangly. Must admit i laughed when i first looked in the mirror as it was shorter than i was expecting and longer on one side at the front. They tidied it up a bit and i tidied up the front and they've actually done a very good job. I'm rewarding them with a takeaway!

I'm fond of the pony tail hair cut but I'd add a few pointers. Pull your hair up and look at the line of hair on the back of your neck. Mine forms a strong V, so the unicorn ponytail will leave me with a long tail that needs a seperate trim to get it more in line. If your neck line is more oval I presume you'd get a less strong dip from the bottom layer. Also, I go less for unicorn (the forehead-based ponytail that gives deep layers) and put the pony tail more towards my crown instead, this leaves me with gentler layers. My hair is curly and over the course of my long life I've only truly ever had one hairdresser who could give me a cut I felt really happy with. Doing my own has saved thousands of pounds and means I'm no longer disappointed after two hours in the chair and nothing to show for it. I think this cut looks more severe on straight hair.
