Eye make up and remover for sensitive eyes

I haven't really worn makeup since I was in my 20s (50 this year) and generally been happy with that.
I have history of very sensitive skin and eczema but that is a little better these days.

I'm generally happy with the non make up look especially my skin as it just reacts to things like foundation so I end up with bad skin anyway.

But , I do feel that I would like to maybe wear something on my eyes these days as my eyes look smaller with age and less defined. I don't have such long dark lashes that I used to have for instance. So maybe even just a light mascara or perhaps a little soft eyeliner.

My problem is that I have very sensitive eyes and tend to get allergies in them quite easily. The skin around them can be sensitive to that sort of thing too.

I have used mascara on the very odd occasion over the years (think once every couple of years) and it doesn't seem to be the mascara as much as the cleanser to take it off.

The diprobase that I use on my skin and as a soap isn't quite strong enough.

So, all you beauty experts, is there a particularly good light mascara for sensitive skin and eyes (I'm quite dark so would need a black or very dark brown but not anything too heavy ) and more specifically something that can take it off fully without causing any problems.

TIA

Garnier Micellar water

3LittleMonkeyz · 31/05/2020 10:10

Or simple eye make up remover. I find I can tolerate makeup better than makeup remover. But it is a bit of trial and error

BusterGonad · 31/05/2020 10:39

I get terrible sore dry dehydrated skin under my eyes. The best thing for me is Bioderma micellar water. With the pink top.

MissSmiley · 31/05/2020 10:41

Lancôme bi fascil

I have really sensitive eye area. Friends and family would comment ( out of concern ) when my eye lids would swell up and become red and inflamed. DH would despair - "You've been messing with your eyes again." - wearing mascara and removing it. I used to get my eyelashes dyed but can't now because they will react badly.
At the moment I'm using Child's Farm Baby Moisturiser to remove mascara, which I rarely wear as my eyes swell up.
The only other eye make up remover I could tolerate was Clinique Naturally Gentle Eye Make Up Remover. Expensive but worth it.

I couldn't use Simple or Garnier Micellar water or Body Shop Camomile or La Roche Posay or Klorane or Avene. Sad

Oh thanks everyone. I'll have a look at those. I should have also said they need to have not been tested on animals or have any animal derived ingredients.

I had heard something years ago about the company Minerals or something?
Does anyone know what they are like?

Bare minerals i think it is

I find Clinique eye makeup is good as I can fall asleep in it & it doesn't make my eyes sore....

Terralee · 31/05/2020 11:54

But I suspect the original ingredients were tested on animals.
However I have to take lots of medication that's been tested on animals anyway unfortunately.

I used a smidge of coconut oil to get my mascara off, massage into eyelids then wipe gently with a cotton wool pad. Then I wash my face with soap. Very low maintenance, me!

Aquamarine1029 · 31/05/2020 12:14

I use organic, unscented almond oil. Works very well.

BinkySodPlop · 31/05/2020 12:15

I use a few, but Burt's Bees "Soap Bark & Chamomile" takes off mascara and leaves my face not feeling right. On that note, you say you use it very infrequently - do you have a new tube each time? Mascara doesn't stay "fresh" for very long, and if it's old, could have a lot of bacteria in it which is irritating your eyes, rather than your cleanser.

BinkySodPlop · 31/05/2020 12:15

Tight, not right! Sorry.....

Breathmiller · 31/05/2020 12:55

Yes maybe that could be it actually.
I haven't actually dound a clenasee that doesn't irritate my eyes though. I only use an emollient feom the doctors for instance, no perfume or creams as they tend to irritate.
Would most proper eye make removers have alcohol maybe?

I will try the almond oil and the coconut oil, thanks.

I'm just generally trying to make a bit more of an effort. Feel i can let a good regime go a bit as I'm older. I suppose i just want to look a tiny bit more polished than i do. I tend to err on the mad hippy side of things 😆
But when i do do a bit of pampering i do feel better. I just need to keep it up

Maybe try a "tubing" mascara, which doesn't require a chemical remover? You just need warm water and a face cloth. There are lots around these days, at different price points. I've got the Boots no.7 one, which is fine for day time.

Wagamamas · 31/05/2020 13:58

I wash my face off with coconut oil rubbed allover and massage the eyelashes to loosen mascara then wipe it all off with a hot flannel.

Elllllle · 31/05/2020 14:23

It's all trial and error when it comes to sensitivities but personally I cant use any eye makeup remover except for neutrogena makeup remover wipes. I have tried EVERYTHING (I went thru a phase of wanting to be greener/animal-friendly and not use wipes and honestly bought and tested so much it was ridiculous, end result being I went back to the wipes and was so bloody grateful that something worked without stinging or causing awful rashes/dermatitis).

Breathmiller · 31/05/2020 15:58

Thanks everyone. All lots to think about. I'll have a try of coconut oil and a face cloth and look into the tubing masacara

Olive oil is a good makeup remover

Greenvalleymama · 31/05/2020 19:31

I would definitely stay well clear of micellar water if you've got sensitive skin around your eyes, lots of people (including myself) have developed eczema around the eye after using that.
Sounds like a good idea to stay as natural as possible, coconut or almond oil should both be fine. B&M sell the most amazing make-up removing cloths if you have one near you and can get in there, they remove even waterproof mascara and my fake tan just using water. It must be witchcraft or something. I'll try to find a picture so you know what you're looking for as I don't think you can order them online.

Greenvalleymama · 31/05/2020 19:34

I buy the white ones but I'm sure the pink are fine too, they are amazing I've converted so many of my friends too!

a bit of nivea blue pot moisuriser on a damp flannel.

Breathmiller · 01/06/2020 17:23

Thees cloths look good @Greenvalleymama thanks. I think maybe with my ususal Diprobase moisturiser i should get most of it off. I'm going to try the Bare minerals eye kit. A liner, a mascara and an eyeshadow.

Thanks everyone
