Natural deodorant...

I have just started using Nuud. Please tell me if this will work. Right now my arm pits are smelling like the arse end of Satan. Apparently there is an adjustment period of around 2 weeks. I can deal with that but only if there is a genuine chance of it working. I have read all sorts of shit stuff about the adjustment period and clearing out of toxins. I don't buy any of that but I have also read that as regular antiperspirant/deos block the pores to reduce sweating, there is a period of time required for these to completely unblock and for the Nuud deo to be able to properly perform. Anyone have any knowledge or advice?

@teenmumandsowhat, how frequently do you apply Nuud? I’m intrigued by it!

fretnot · 03/06/2020 15:36

I really like the Aesop spray deodorant and have been using for years now. My kids love the smell. Agree about keeping underarm hair short/removed though!

teenmumandsowhat · 03/06/2020 15:41

@PenfoldsFive I tend to apply it usually every 2-3 days after I’ve had a shower.
When I first started using it it didn’t seem to work, and in order for it to do so I ended up having to do a total detox from all deodorant for 30 days (in the winter so not too sweaty) and then when I restarted it it worked fine after that.
I still sweat but I don’t get the smell of bo.

PenfoldsFive · 03/06/2020 15:45

Hmm, so you couldn’t flit back and forth between different deodorants, teen?

SpringSpringTime · 03/06/2020 15:47

Interesting. I'm using an aluminium free dove one and it's totally crap. I actually quite liked the Weleda sage one but only over winter.

teenmumandsowhat · 03/06/2020 16:36

@PenfoldsFive no I can’t, but that could just be me.

BammBamm · 03/06/2020 17:04

Pitrok works better for me than anything else and I struggled with strong deodorant before switching. You have to follow the instructions though. It doesn't work as well for my partner, but maybe as he has hair?

Bluebell79 · 03/06/2020 20:18

I’ve just bought the deodorant cream and some soap from Conchus, it’s only been a few days but my daughter and I both like them. I found the lady on Instagram.

martha79 · 03/06/2020 20:28

Another vote for the Natural Deodorant Co. I use the gentle one for everyday and the 'clean' one for working out/ hotter days - I didn't have an adjustment period and I've been really impressed with it.

RedTitsMcGinty · 03/06/2020 22:36

I use Nuud and find it great but it definitely took a two week adjustment period of smelling not great.

PenfoldsFive · 04/06/2020 08:19

Does a tube really last as long as their advertising suggests, @RedTitsMcGinty?

I’m not sure I’m totally buying into the ‘expelling toxins’ thang about changing TL natural deodorant in general, is that actually proven?

RedTitsMcGinty · 04/06/2020 08:34

Yeah, I don’t believe the toxins guff either! Not sure why it took a short while to change over — maybe just my skin getting used to it. But yes, the tube lasts ages.

Gingefringe · 04/06/2020 08:42

Im using a deodorant by Tropic - maybe not in the same 'natural' category but certainly the products are natural and vegan. I've been very impressed.

PenfoldsFive · 04/06/2020 11:12

No idea what TL means there. Grin

@damnthatanxiety, are you smelling of BO as you'd expect if you just weren't wearing deodorant, or is the arse end of Satan a different smell?

Maverick66 · 04/06/2020 11:32

Pitrok for me.
I sweat heavily but am allergic to every thing perfumed and all the main stream deodorants.
Pitrok really works as a deodorant.
Bought it in Holland and Barrett

snappycamper · 04/06/2020 11:37

There definitely is an adjustment period. I couple of years ago I was really concerned about the amount I was sweating and smelling. I used Mitchum and other high strength deodorants and I really believe that there's something in the narrative about them sticking to your skin and clothes and actually holding the bacteria in, so that as soon as you start to sweat you stink again.

I had a 2-3 week detox period where I washed with anti bac soap and tried various different non anti perspirants, some of them were so poor that I smelled absolutely awful by mid afternoon. A couple of times i washed with dettol as I smelled so bad.

I'm now a fan of the salt crystal deodorants, pitrok and the like (currently using a faith in nature one, the packaging for salt of the earth is crap and repeatedly broke on me). During the cooler months this is all I need. In the warmer months I layer up a bit and use the crystal one first then spray a scented one over the top. Salt of the earth do a nice rose and lavender one, neals yard do a gorgeous lemon and coriander which is my favourite.

I tried wild earlier this year (sucked in by the marketing) and didn't find it at all effective for me. I think it's just a case of trial and error until you find what works for you. I've been using crystal deodorant for 2 years now and I'm never going back.

livingit38 · 04/06/2020 11:47

I've used salt of the earth before when I was going for non chemical products ....it was good but I wouldn't say as good as my normal non natural one I'm afraid

springtimeinbognor · 04/06/2020 12:30

@Neilsfavouritechilli

I'm currently using native which I'd recommend. Its held up on my regular 5-10 mile walks and I'm definately not smelling sweaty - my other half concurs and he's not one to lie to be kind.
Absolutely agree. Over the last 40 years I've tried so many. Native really works and smells nice. My two daughters are converts too.
PenfoldsFive · 07/06/2020 09:26

Reporting back on the Schmidt sensitive to say it’s working well. I think it stops the odour as well as the Malin & Goetz but my armpits feel a bit drier. It’s a lot cheaper, but as it’s a stick type I’m not sure it will last as long as the M&G.

Glitterb · 07/06/2020 09:33

@Bluebell79 Interesting, I’ve been looking at her natural deodorant as I use her bar shampoo and it’s massive improved my psoriasis so I was going to take the plunge with her deodorant as well! Does it work well?

goosyray · 07/06/2020 09:38

I've stared using Schmidt natural deodorant i find it really good and the scent is nice also

PenfoldsFive · 07/06/2020 10:21

Just flagging up for those of a sensitive persuasion that some Schmidt deodorants contain bicarb and some don’t. I think it’s the bicarb that napalmed my armpits when I tried the Lush solid deodorant.

Bluebell79 · 07/06/2020 10:27

I do think there’s an adjustment period when you first start using natural deodorants, and you need to wash with a bar of soap......if I knew I had a busy day I would use Mitchum at first, but my skin has become so sensitive now, the past year I was going deodorant free as I don’t seem to sweat very much and being home a lot helps. @glitterb I bought the trial size in breeze from conchus, it only been a couple of weeks and my skin hasn’t reacted but I don’t seem to sweat like I did. However my 10yr old daughter does sweat and was really smelling, she was using bar soap and a dove stick deodorant and would still smell by the end of the day baring in mind we are home lots, since using the conchus bar soaps and the breeze cream deodorant she’s not smelt at all.

AmIAWeed · 07/06/2020 10:36

I love nuud. I'd say I noticed a difference within 2 weeks and I've been using it for abiut 18 months. I wouldn't go back to a traditional deodorant now. I was really sweaty and the strongest 48 hour stuff just didn't cut it, weirdly with nuud I don't use it every day, I'll go a week without using at all, I assume it's more hormone based as to when I sweat and need it. Again, all guess work but I'm assuming as I don't have nasty chemicals clogging up that's why I'm more in tune to changes and only use when needed now

damnthatanxiety · 07/06/2020 11:45

For all those who find natural deodorants work....I have read comments here and reviews elsewhere where people have said that on days they knew they were going to sweat alot, or on particularly hot days, they use a traditional deodorant but other than that, they use Nuud or Native or whatever. But how doe that work with the whole 2-4 week detox period? If you use traditional deos one day, does that mess up your bacterias again and send you back to square one?
