Would you return shoes that made your feet bleed?

Treated myself to some Clark's brogues. They're beautiful and I thought they would be really comfy. Wore them for the first time today and they've made my feet bleed at the heel where they rub!

I'm guessing I just have to suck this up and can't return them? Sad

You definitely can return them if you’ve bled on them unless there is a defect.

bluefoxmug · 19/05/2020 13:34

did you try them before buying?

CrazyDuchess · 19/05/2020 13:34

What material are the shoes?

Desmondo2016 · 19/05/2020 13:34

No, I wouldn't. Unless I knew several other people with the same shoe that had the same problem (which, obviously, is unlekly!)

ArsenicNLace · 19/05/2020 13:35

Lots of shoes do that surely?

You just put some plasters on the back of your heels until you break them in?

I thought that was always a natural hazard of new shoes?

Ultrasoft · 19/05/2020 13:35

Unless they fitted them for you, you can't return them after you've worn them.

I did return a paid of DS's shoes that gave him blisters but they were supposed to have been professionally fitted. They didn't quibble at all over that

olympicsrock · 19/05/2020 13:35

I think if you have worn them outside or got blood on them you can’t return. I always wear new shoes with socks on around the house for an hour at a time to soften them up.

HappyHammy · 19/05/2020 13:35

Did you wear them around the house to break them in and wear slipper sox. I always find the hard good quality leather shoes very uncomfortable.

portocristo · 19/05/2020 13:44

Hi feel your pain I always get rubbed heels , I wouldn’t return them but a tip for future new shoes rub Vaseline on your heels before wearing, it works brilliantly

avroroad · 19/05/2020 13:46

Just wear compeed for a while while you break them In

inwood · 19/05/2020 13:48

I love clarks brogues, I have an unhealthy amount. Every single pair has made my heels bleed but once they are broken in it is so worth it.

Are they patent, they are worse than the regular ones?

Northernsoullover · 19/05/2020 13:49

I did. They were clarks and had a beautiful scalloped edge. It had the effect of walking with cheese graters attached to my feet. I had my feet covered in compeed but it was clear they were never going to give.
I expected a fight but they refunded immediately. This was some years ago though. Its still worth asking.

CovidicusRex · 19/05/2020 13:51

Lots (if not all) good quality shoes will make your feet blister or bleed as you break them in. I can only think of one instance where that hasn’t happened to meet (hiking shoes, everyone else I know with the same ones had blistering so I guess they were a particularly good fit for me).

Viviennemary · 19/05/2020 13:51

No. This is often a problem. You can buy inserts which you put in the shoe and that usually solves the problem. I agree it's annoying and painful.

peanutsandcream · 19/05/2020 14:09

Agree with buying inserts to resolve the problem.

CrocusPocus · 19/05/2020 14:13

I did this once. It was a poorly stitched pair from Debenhams which had a sort of knot in the stitching at the back of the heel. Fine when trying on in the shops, but it ripped my heel to shreds after 15 mins of wear. They refunded them straight away.

donkaaaay · 19/05/2020 16:43

They're leather. I've never worn a pair of shoes in the house to break them in my life! Is this really a thing?!

OP posts:
goatley · 19/05/2020 17:07

I think you will have to persevere with them.

Blister plasters for now and socks.

I have one pair of boots which have never 'given' so I put a strip of micropore on each heel when I wear them (as well as socks) just for protection.

picklemewalnuts · 19/05/2020 17:12

"I've never worn a pair of shoes in the house to break them in my life! Is this really a thing?!"

Absolutely! I always wear shoes around the house, building up the time until they have accommodated my foot. The point of leather is that it gives where there is pressure and develops a personalised fit. Sometimes that takes a bit of extra effort- two pairs of thin socks for example. If not they will soften and get too big and sloppy!

RozaDiPoza · 19/05/2020 17:15

No you do not return them! You should have chosen more wisely. I appreciate it became apparent later but at the initial trial you would have felt something not right.

I disagree with persevering you will ruin your feet. Good shoes should feel good from the start.

ToothFairyNemesis · 19/05/2020 17:16

The point of leather is that it gives where there is pressure and develops a personalised fit.
This is why you shouldn’t buy second hand shoes for children, only clothes. It’s better a cheap new pair from a supermarket than second hand Startrite for example.

donkaaaay · 19/05/2020 17:24

I bought them online, in my normal size and width which I've never had an issue with from Clark's before. I popped them on when getting ready this morning and by the time I'd driven to work realised they were rubbing. By then I was at work and too late to do anything about them. Not sure work would have appreciated me walking round in bare feet. Grin

How exactly should I have chosen more carefully than I did?! 😂 that's really tickled me, thank you!

OP posts:
bluefoxmug · 19/05/2020 17:36

that's why I never buy shoes online

Kaykay066 · 19/05/2020 17:38

Brogues are quite firm shoes and if you’re not used to edges and solid leather where they’ve rubbed then I’d protect my feet and wear them in till they soften to my feet you can buy some soft sticky material to apply to back to prevent rubbing I used to do that with some heels. I also have balm I apply as a barrier and as others have said compeed/plasters sure you’re feet will get used to them eventually even tiny trainer socks or liners would help too

Suzie6789 · 19/05/2020 17:38

I have some of those, I forgot the name of them but the weren’t the hamble oaks, as I have 3 pairs of those! The ones that rubbed me had the scalloped edge and were gold Northernsoullover
They rubbed me so deeply it didn’t heal for 5 weeks ☹️ Never had a problem like that before with Clark’s.
