zara bag

OP posts:
lulumama · 19/09/2007 13:55

I would not think someone with that bag would be a Nazi, but i would find it odd that they were comfortable to carry the bag, with all the connotations of the symbol.

i doubt many people have bought it or would have bought it as a way to reclaim the origional meaning of the swastika.

Bessie123 · 19/09/2007 13:55

Oliveoil, it's true that it is an offence in Germany (and maybe Austria, I'm not sure) to display Nazi symbols.

Heathcliffscathy · 19/09/2007 13:55

no OO, i think that's right, in germany nazi imagery is banned i think. however, I think they'd have trouble proving that the bags were nazi given what i've been saying. not to mention that they are not on a white and red background and that i think they go round the other way. patently NOT nazi imagery if you go into it a bit.

oliveoil · 19/09/2007 13:56

didn't Kula Shaker (band from eons ago) get into trouble once with this?

iirc the singer was a bit of a yoga/hippy botherer and had some cd artwork with it on iirc

Bessie123 · 19/09/2007 13:56

Anyway, all this reclaiming idea is complete rubbish. Would you expect a black person to be comfortable with you wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the N word as a way of 'reclaiming' it?

DarrellRivers · 19/09/2007 13:57

Aha, Bessie, I don't think the word Nazi has ancient sanskrit roots

Heathcliffscathy · 19/09/2007 13:57

you learn something new on mn eveyday

Peachy · 19/09/2007 13:58

I have a wonderful article on my uni space which I have forgotten the passowrd for (nto back until tomorrow)- called 'Reclaim the Swastika'. The swastika (admittedly often twisted, reversed etc but not always) is an acient life symbol in Hindu religion dating back to the Indus Valley Civilisation- ie more than a few years before the nazi's sole the imagery!

Of course I would never carry the bag because I know what everyone (excpet my friends, as we are studying Hinduism) would associate it with.... but in reality that's wrong, it's an essential part of Hindy symbology and they shoudl be able to reclaim it.

DarrellRivers · 19/09/2007 13:58

Sorry or even the N word you meant Bessie

Bessie123 · 19/09/2007 13:58

DarrellRivers, clearly, I wasn't talking about the word Nazi

Keep up keep up bessie dear

Heathcliffscathy · 19/09/2007 13:58

ahem. i think you'll find that black people have indeed reclaimed the word 'nigga'. vis almost every rap track released this year for eg.

and 'queer' has been reclaimed by the gay community hasn't it.

perhaps it's time the world reclaimed this ancient and STILL widely used symbol.

DarrellRivers · 19/09/2007 13:58

Christ, next you'll be accusing me of being racist

lulumama · 19/09/2007 13:59

I don't think Zara want to reclaim the symbol...

Bessie123 · 19/09/2007 13:59

Peachy, who do you mean by 'they'? Do you mean Hindus in India, or do you mean Western Europeans who may have nothing at all to do with Hinduism?

Peachy · 19/09/2007 13:59

I ahve a beautifil book cover in front of me btw, (At the feet of the Goddess, lynn Foulston)- a heavily decorated pair of feet belonging to an Indian women, with a flame and a swastika.

DarrellRivers · 19/09/2007 13:59

I think all Zra want to do is dump the darn bag as quickly as possible

TellusMater · 19/09/2007 14:00

Fair point lulumama.

I don't think it's a political statement of any persuasion by Zara...

oliveoil · 19/09/2007 14:00

kula shaker bit on here, I was right

and yes, I am bored

it justs makes me uncomfortable, i think that for as long as the swastika remains a symbol of nazism, it is a current reminder of the terrible evil that was perpertrated ,not that long ago.. and that to me is important.

belgo · 19/09/2007 14:01

it's amazing that Zara don't check their stuff before selling it, or even look at it properly.

DarrellRivers · 19/09/2007 14:01

The Hindus I think do not need to reclaim it.
It is alive and kicking in their culture and oh yes Bessie , there are Hindus in Europe too

Peachy · 19/09/2007 14:02

I mean anyone who subscribes to the Eastern Faiths that utilise the symbology of Hinduism- remembering that many Hindus are English, Welsh etc; and also that Eastern Symbology has a shared theme throughout religions such as Buddhism, Jainism etc which are all parts of our world rather than exclusive to the Indian subcontinent.
