Anyone have long, fine hair?

Always had long hair but as i've got older i struggle to keep it in good condition past a certain length, it's very fine and seems to go dull/brittle, split ends and generally an unmanageable frizzy dead bush :( i cut it all short about 10months ago and its healthier but i miss my long hair - any tips on keeping long finer hair healthy as we age!???

Do you dye it? Mine was fine and went dry and brittle at the ends. I couldn't grow it past shoulder length. I stopped chasing the grey and now it's thick and glossy. I actually have to get it thinned at the salon. All hairdressers remark on how thick it is 🤣

AllMouthandTrousers · 08/05/2020 19:44

No, never once dyed it!

How long was it and how long is it now? I have very fine hair. Mine is now About mid shoulder length and I consider it long as I have the same issues. Previous to this it has always been sort of Bob to shoulder length.

From what I can gather, a blunt cut seem better rather than layers. No heat (straighteners) or bleach as they damaged my hair. I haven't done it it years but a 'box dye' does thicken it up. It also grow so incredibly slowly, I assume because it snaps at the ends

Mine is long and fine. I trim it every 6 weeks to keep split ends in check and use that Aussie shampoo and 3 minute miracle conditioner, the deep moisture ones. Use a detangling spray before brushing it too. It mostly behaves with a bit of straightening.

I have straight fine hair but quite a lot of it. It was down to my bra strap but my hairdresser cut it all off to above shoulders this week. I like both but don't know which looks better.

Ah good, don't ever dye it. Just highlights perhaps later if you need them, as it isn't chemicals on the scalp. How about trying vitamins for hair, skin and nails? Could be worth a try.

AllMouthandTrousers · 08/05/2020 20:09

It used to be about the length of the lady's in the first pic above, but i got a bob! I do quite like it short but finding it quite high maintenance with styling. Its grown out quickly tbf and i can now get it in a ponytail

I use henna on my (fine and quite long) hair and it makes a big difference - I used to have highlights put in and the condition was awful; now it’s much less split/frizzy and I even get compliments on how shiny and healthy it looks, which never happened before!

berrychakewellplease · 08/05/2020 20:33

Good idea from pp about the vitamin supplements. Have you considered olaplex? I have been recently thinking about trying this to try and get it past the fragile snapping stage.

AllMouthandTrousers · 08/05/2020 20:54

Will google olaplex and yes try supplement...

I was just going to recommend olaplex too. You will need number 3. Also how about making your own hair oil. You can use coconut oil with Jamaican black caster oil, rosemary oil and peppermint oil. Leave it overnight if possible. Do this twice per week for about 3 months or so, you should see a difference.

I love Schwarzkopf Barbary fig oil and keratin treatment. It’s for dry brittle hair, I apply it to my ends to keep them healthy and stop them snapping off.

It’s been kind of a game changer for my hair, as it’s always been so fine (but masses of it) that the strands used to break before it got to a decent length. Now it’s longer and healthier than its ever been.

AllMouthandTrousers · 09/05/2020 07:16

Thanks all!

How long is your hair now, OP?

AllMouthandTrousers · 11/05/2020 13:24

Just brushing my shoulders, got a fringe to grow out aswell though :/ once it gets past the shoulder it starts to get dodgy

Ahh mine is the same OP. Pretty much from age 35 it started getting thin and scraggly past a certain length. I keep it no longer than collarbone length now, and that seems to be the best length for my hair. I do miss having long hair though, but I am resigned to long hair being in the past now. :(

StCharlotte · 11/05/2020 17:16

I have fine hair. For this very reason I don't have long hair.

Having it shorter makes it look thicker. The longest I'd go is a shoulder length blunt "lob" (which by the time we're let out is exactly what it will be Grin).

daisydaisydoodle · 11/05/2020 17:20

Mine is very very fine and I like long hair. I have a weave in for thickness.

AllMouthandTrousers · 11/05/2020 19:20

Collar bone i would be pleased with! Long bob suits me too though luckily...i guess nobody has perfected really long fine hair!

I have long fine hair but a lot of it. Luckily it’s not in too bad a condition but it can get unmanageable and static with some products. Moroccan oil and coconut oil are terrible for me but Philip Kingsley Elasticizer is fabulous. Just got an offer for a full size one if you buy another product. PM for a referral code if you can’t find one by googling.

HotPinkLilies · 11/05/2020 22:09

Where do you live, @Chochito?

Chochito · 11/05/2020 23:28

Spain

bingowingsmcgee · 11/05/2020 23:38

daisy can I be nosey and ask what brand or kind your weave is? Is it like a clip-in piece? I'm after one but I don't know where to start x

daisydaisydoodle · 12/05/2020 07:42

@bingowingsmcgee mine is sewn in using an LA weave technique and I buy the hair from additional lengths because I like to dye my hair quite frequently and this hair dyed well. Hair lasts a good year. You can buy their hair as clip ins too. I started out with those. You can ask hairdressers ( when they're back) to trim them to blend them with your own hair to make them look natural
