Bright ORANGE hair! What can I do?

londonbrick · 04/05/2020 06:39

Used cassia obovata on my hair last night - as I do every few months - this was a new packet and I usually leave it on overnight as usual.

That was mistake no 1.

I'm next due into work on Wed. Is there any kind of quick fix or do I just have to pretend I was going for a jaffa orange look?

Thanks for making me laugh ~ I'm working hard on my denialacceptance & along with Brexpat's theme wonder what job/personality this hair colour could be suited to. It could be a catalyst for something.

Puppet Dick Van Dyke popped into mind ~ though when I checked it wasn't his hair colour at all but his trousers.

Love it but then I love dyed colours like this.

peoplearepeople · 05/05/2020 18:41

Do you have access to pure indigo powder? If you put indigo over it for around 20-30 mins you should get a light brown colour.

ouch321 · 05/05/2020 18:43

I actually like it. You've got enough colour in your skin so as it doesn't wash you out.

KingOfDogShite · 05/05/2020 18:44

I think it looks really cool!

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 05/05/2020 18:47

You need a blue shampoo opposite to orange on the colour wheel.

woodhill · 05/05/2020 18:49

It's quite nice OP. You made me laugh with Jaffa cake description

MrsMGE · 05/05/2020 18:58

OP, I really like it! 👌 I think you should leave it as is.

GreasyFryUp · 05/05/2020 19:00

I really like it too. Love orange.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/05/2020 19:49

I haven't tried this . I used to use BodyShop Extra Red Henna back in the late 80s/early 90s , but my hair was dark brown.

GIN apparently you scoop it over and over . Use a bowl and a plastic cup (no metal with henna) and it takes the red out .

Or you can drink it and not feel so bad ...until the hangover .

Vodka works too , quick Google tells me

You could try staining it brown with strong coffee. I dye my grey hair blonde with a mixture of camomile, instant coffee, redbush tea and a tiny bit of turmeric. Apply to dry hair, completely saturate, leave in, comb through and dry and style as usual. Natural stains can be quite potent!Grin

londonbrick · 05/05/2020 20:34

veryvery that's the sort of cocktail I'd like. I'm obviously still a beginner!

I'm swayed by peoplearepeople with the indigo idea ~ what do we think? There's some on ebay that could arrive by 14 May.

There is also a bottle of gin around here somewhere - I could try it on a bit thats less obvious.

Do a strand test, try dipping a strand in strong coffee, dry your hair and see if it covers it. Or you could try tea. I think you will need a brown tone to cover it and tone it down.

My hair was pretty all over grey virgin hair, grown through after chemo. My hair dyeing tea stains it blonde. I brew it in a teapot, pour it over dry clean hair and leave in. It lasts more than one wash, fades a small bit after washing. I use a small pinch (about half a little finger nail in size) of turmeric, 2 redbush tea bags, 6 camomile teabags and half a teaspoon instant coffee brewed up in a teapot and saturate my hair with it and leave in.

Because your hair is orange I think you'd need bleach to make it blonde. You could feasibly stain it brown, I think, though.

CornedBeef451 · 05/05/2020 20:51

I like it! I bet it will fade a lot with the head and shoulders, whenever I've dyed mine it wears of quickly before the colour settles.

extremity1 · 05/05/2020 20:55

Ok wow. That's a new one on me. I wasnt quite expecting that!

To be honest, leave it. Or just try a deep cleansing shampoo to remove any product build up over time.Trying to neutralise that could easily go wrong and leave you with a very muddy colour or worse an adverse chemical reaction depending on what you've used. A blue shampoo wont really do much to be honest.

Rock it out. Get out some hot tools and go wild with a bit of product. If you wear glasses get a statement pair, brighten up make up if you wear it, big bold jewellery and own the shit out of your new look. I actually love the colour!

BlueBooby · 05/05/2020 20:58

I've made my hair that colour on purpose before. I don't think it's a terrible colour. But if you don't like it, I second the anti dandruff shampoo followed by purple toner suggestion.

LajesticVantrashell · 05/05/2020 20:58

I honestly thought I was the last person on earth still using Sun In! Yes, it's evil but I've been using it since I was 14 (so 25 years) and I constantly get comments about how nice my hair is and what good condition it's in.

ofwarren · 05/05/2020 21:00

I think the colour is great! I'm surprised it went so bright though.

BlueBooby · 05/05/2020 21:00

I did feel a bit like a walking cartoon though and the novelty of it wore off fairly quickly.

peoplearepeople · 05/05/2020 21:01

I think it depends on how much you want rid of the orange. Grin
I've worked with henna a lot and would regularly use henna and then indigo together to achieve different shades of brown. My main tip would be to do the indigo for half an hour at first and then build up to longer if it isn't dark enough. It can fade quickly so don't worry if it seems a bit dark at first.
Another option could be the aveda black malva conditioner if you can get hold of it. It's strong stuff and again not permanent. I think this may pull slightly more blue/purple on you though.
The" it's pure" brand of henna is also really good. They are pre mixed henna and indigo powders The one in a dark brown shade is quite ashy and doesn't pull orange. Again if you only put it on for a short amount of time, it won't go too dark and you won't be ruining the condition of your hair like box dyes often do. What colour do you want to end up with?

HeronLanyon · 05/05/2020 21:06

I like it too ! I also think from what I can see that it suits you.

whenwillthemadnessend · 05/05/2020 21:08

I thought it was going to be way worse than that. It looks great. It goes with what I can see of your hairstyle.

MrsLully · 05/05/2020 21:26

Been there, done that.
Get a blue black box dye, the brand doesn't matter. The blue will counteract any brassy tones in your hair, and for some reason this works 10000 times better than blue or purple shampoos. Then mix a bit of both the color tube and the peroxide with your regular shampoo (your shampoo should be either colourless or white). Put the mixture on your wet hair and leave it on for a couple of minutes. Mind you, if it's bright orange you might need to leave it on a bit longer. Rinse as you normally would!
You'll be left with a very natural ashy dark blond. Also, you can repeat every time you see the unwanted orange tones.
