Dermaplaning

Has anyone tried dermaplaning? I've seen a few YouTube videos and it intrigues me. I don't know whether to try it. I have fairly dry skin with a few rough patches. If I wear foundation it doesn't really sit properly on my skin. I wonder if it will help.

Does anyone have any tips?

Watching with interest! I bought some blade things the other day to try this. Instagram videos have made me think its a good idea, but I'm too scared to actually give it a go!

LuxuryWoman2020 · 29/04/2020 10:28

I do it, it’s very easy indeed and leaves my skin very smooth so moisturiser sinks in and makeup sits well..

it removes peach fuzz obviously but it’s more the deep exfoliating effect that is the point of it.

Thank you for the replies. Do you use any products before /after? I've seen different routines on YouTube

I do it now and again. Make sure your face is squeaky clean before starting. Follow the advice on the Youtube vid and do not be tempted to get too close to your eyebrows or hairline. Be careful around your mouth too; got to hold your skin taut. Afterwards, I rinse with water then tone and slap on some serum/moisturiser. Don't be surprised if you get a zit or two the day after (does this to me but they go quickly compared to others that I get). My makeup glides on and I think it's lessened some of my scars. Even if it didn't, I'd still do it to get rid of the bloody chin hairs!

Lighteninginabottle27 · 29/04/2020 14:03

I do it all the time. Use a fresh sterile blade on a clean face each time. Keep the skin taut.

motheroreily · 29/04/2020 14:07

I am excited Grin how often do you do it?

Apologies if this is a thick question but is it not just like shaving??

BobbinThreadbare123 · 29/04/2020 14:14

Yes, it is shaving. You're taking the vellus hairs off your face. Arguably you need them but they don't grow back any thicker or darker anyway. The thin blade also takes the dead skin off as well, so it's an exfoliating technique. The main benefit for me is that, after the teen years of Jolene bleach and then painfully waxing my top lip, the dermaplaning gets rid of all of it. Then I zap it with a Lumea and it doesn't come back!

dietcoker · 29/04/2020 14:16

I've had it done at clinic. Skin looks great but I didn't like the stubble after!!

woodencoffeetable · 29/04/2020 14:21

how does it compare to a chemical peel?

Mummyshark2018 · 29/04/2020 14:26

I've ordered on online and waiting on it to arrive. I'm a bit scared too as I don't want my dark hairs to come back darker and coarser. Does this happen?

CatherineTheNotSoGreat · 29/04/2020 14:30

@BobbinThreadbare123 thanks for that. Don't think it's for me. Are there any longterm benefits?

Lighteninginabottle27 · 29/04/2020 16:01

It's just exfoliating. A bit like shaving your legs. I look glowy in the days afterwards.

itakephotos · 29/04/2020 16:17

I've recently bought the veet kit. Comes with an oil and really easy to use. Only used once but am pretty happy, skins nice and smooth and glowy afterwards.

emma6776 · 29/04/2020 18:13

I do it every couple of weeks. I expected to feel stubbly after i did it for the first time but barely notice any regrowth. I have a super sensitive top lip so this has been a game changer for me.

Clickncollect · 29/04/2020 18:25

I had it done professionally and I did really like it, my skin felt lovely and soft. But I definitely have more black hairs on my chin than before so I don’t really agree with it not growing back thicker. So if you are happy to keep doing it regularly then it’s probably ok but I don’t really want to have to commit to a regular treatment.
I bought a kind of touch up lipstick looking electrical product which I run over my jawline occasionally but unfortunately I now get a lot of pimples on the jawline that I didn’t do before.

AnPo · 29/04/2020 18:36

It's literally just shaving your face - no more, no less. I've had it done professionally twice and then realised I was being a complete idiot spending €70 for someone to shave my face Confused

So I bought one of the jml ones a couple of weeks ago for €20 and it does the same thing. I've just used it once and I'm probably not going to do it again - the stubble is real! Not sure it's worth weeks of stubble for a couple of days of softness.

AnPo · 29/04/2020 18:39

Also got pimples from it - both when I did it myself and when I had it professionallly done. I've come to the conclusion that "dermaplaining" is a fantastic marketing ploy enabling people to sell razor blades for extortionate prices!

Clickncollect · 29/04/2020 18:56

@AnPo Yes, mine is the jml one. I just don’t know why I thought that I needed to introduce shaving into my life! I should have just stuck to plucking the random chin hairs that popped up.

Mummyshark2018 · 29/04/2020 20:31

Not sure whether to use mine now when it comes. I have very dark thick and generally coarse hair Confused

Girlintheframe · 29/04/2020 20:36

I use it on my top lip as I've suddenly become very sensitive to veet. Have used it a few times now. Hair hasn't come in darker or coarser (not sure why it would as your just cutting/shaving the hair?)

TomNook · 29/04/2020 21:39

I have it done and I looooove it

Tabithha · 29/04/2020 23:01

I do it once a month and I love it.
I use a proper scalpel to do it though as the eyebrow razors most people use broke me out terribly. I also put hemp oil on my face before as it prevents my skin from being irritated. @woodencoffeetable it’s very different to a chemical peel. The exfoliation is mild compared to the glycolic acid I use. I dermaplane for mild exfoliation and the removal of peach fuzz. I use chemical peels for deeper exfoliation for smooth skin and the reduction of hyperpigmentation

AnPo · 29/04/2020 23:05

Mummyshark2018

I would be slightly wary if the hair is coarse. When I had it done professionally the therapist asked if I had any coarse hair that I plucked/removed and she avoided those areas as she said it was only supposed to be used on the fine/downy hair. She waxed my upper lip instead and dermaplaned the rest.

Whycantibetangy · 29/04/2020 23:17

Isn’t it just a fancy word for shaving your face though? Genuinely intrigued as I am very peach fuzzy but combo of wax and zapping with my lumea keeps me less beardy.

Surely there is stubble as the hairs grow back? They wont be fine and wispy like currently as will have a cut end?

Will someone who had had it done please explain honestly as all the reviews I’ve seen tend to be from beauticians who are flogging the service
