Glasses for face shape

lassesinglasses · 26/04/2020 15:21

I currently wear contact lenses, but getting glasses has been on my to do list for a while, which I'm looking forward to.

But I've no idea what style will suit me.

So this is my face shape.

Can anyone tell me what shape I should be going for and what I should avoid? Anything else I should be considering? Like the fact I'm almost transparent? And any style recommendations I can look at?

Thanks.

Try glasses direct. You can order the frames with plain lenses for free to try on at home. Then you return for free.

lassesinglasses · 26/04/2020 17:54

Thanks @TDL2016 I'll check that out!

Although, I don't trust my own judgement of what suits me.

Specsavers have an app thing which takes a picture and then shows what shape suits you. I don't know if It's accessible on their website?

Thinkle · 26/04/2020 18:05

I think you have an oval face which in theory means you can wear anything. Bigger and rounder seems to be quite in at the mo.
I am also nearly transparent skin tone and blonde and when I had to choose glasses we quickly rules out black as too harsh. I ruled out brown as I don’t wear it so the only ‘neutral’ left was a cool toned blue/grey.
I get lots of nice comments about them!

SinkGirl · 26/04/2020 18:05

There are several sites where you can upload a photo and then try the frames on you.

You have a similar shape face to me and I wear these - I’ve never had glasses that suit me before but I look better in these than without them on (not difficult, to be fair)

I have them in red and in black too

Round and cat eye will look good. avoid square or rectangle. A chunky colourful frame will be good. Avoid dainty or metal glasses.

The best video I have found on this is this one which I found so useful when I was getting glasses:

My first instinct is to say you should try something something slightly square or rectangular. I have a similar face shape to you although my face shape is rounder and I find that my glasses, which are a square, provide a bit of balance to my features and are flattering, whereas round glasses make my face look even rounder.

Iolla ( iolla.com/collections/optical ) have a quick and easy to use virtual try on. You don't need to register or login to use it, just pick a style and let the site use your phone camera to "try on" frames. Even if you don't fancy any of their styles (I love them!) it's pretty good to give you an idea if the shape that suits you best.

I'm really fair and got these in granite.

It also depends on the distance of your nose bridge.

I have an oval face so in theory, can pull off most styles. However I have a tiny nose, so ended up being quite limited to certain styles that didn’t drown or overwhelm my face.

CorianderLord · 26/04/2020 18:50

Check out Cubitts - they have a video try on thing which uses your webcam and puts it on your face. £125 a pair

CorianderLord · 26/04/2020 18:54

They're v stylish as well I have two different types in a thin gold wire and a mixed brown and gold frame. I have similar colouring but a different face shape and those suit me.

They also do clear, light greys etc

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/04/2020 18:56

Do you need varifocals or single vision specs?
I need varifocals and my optician recommended smaller frames otherwise the reading part of the prescription would be half way down on my
cheeks.

Alocasia · 26/04/2020 18:59

I’m an optician and dispense glasses very often. Personally I think the face shape thing is nonsense. There are so many other factors, such as the size of your head, how far apart your eyes are, the position of your brows, the shape/height of your nose bridge etc. There is no substitute for just trying loads of styles on until you find one you like best. I know it’s not possible at the moment but it would be good when you can to go into an opticians where they are interested in eyewear and try a lot on, the staff will be able to help as they know what suits just by looking at you!

lassesinglasses · 26/04/2020 19:11

@Alocasia very true, as I'm paying attention
to the eyebrows of the models.

The Cubitts virtual try on seems to be working for me. Hours of fun! Can see this becoming an expensive shopping habit.

Dear god, I was not prepared for the horror that is that Cubitts thing

lassesinglasses · 26/04/2020 19:34

@SinkGirl I'm struggling to feel that anything on there suits me. And I feel hella ugly Grin

CorianderLord · 26/04/2020 19:42

Haha yeah it can be a little off but gives you an idea

lassesinglasses · 26/04/2020 19:48

@CorianderLord it's definitely a help. There's certainly a few maybes in amongst the absolute no ways.

I really recommend Glasses Direct. They send you up to four pairs free, you then return them in the free post box provided. Have had several several pairs from them.

SinkGirl · 26/04/2020 20:00

I honestly look like I’ve had a stroke on it.

I found an amazing one last year which used a bank card against your forehead to measure the size of your face so the glasses were to scale. Wish I could remember which it was!
