I can't believe it worked hair slightly damp and wrapped around a dressing gown belt and tied with hair bands and at the back.

Please can you give us a detailed description of how you tied the belt, OP? I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to try this!

Did people use rags for curling hair overnight in the good old days?

Dickorydockwhatthe · 24/04/2020 21:15

That might be an idea. It was so quick and easy to do but just not very comfy 😬

I also did mine last night but kept each side just hanging down and couldn’t feel them at all during the night.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 24/04/2020 21:35

Mine looks like it was looser than yours and only really took hair from the front so maybe that’s why it wasn’t uncomfortable. Second pic was this morning about 7:30am and last one was about 6pm, lasted really well considering my hair was hardly even damp!

This looks amazing and so easy to do!

puppymouse · 24/04/2020 21:40

I use socks sometimes. Just like rags really in years gone by. Wrap hair round sock and tie up. Works really well!

Dickorydockwhatthe · 25/04/2020 00:26

I will give rags or socks a try dh already thinks I am going mad with lock down 😬 how ever he was impressed how well it worked. I thinky hair was 90% dry and I did pack them tight because my hairs quite short.

I use one of those giant hair elastics to do this. Put it on like a headband then wrap sections round the band, secure with a kirby grip.

TKAAHUARTG · 25/04/2020 06:40

I think a rolled sock bun may be more comfortable. They are very 40s looking curls, which is very nice but may not be the look you are going for?

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 25/04/2020 07:15

I use a silk scarf to do this it's much nicer to sleep in.

I've also tried an old t-shirt & bought a special hair band.

The hair band was rubbish very uncomfortable & it's got Velcro so felt like my hair was being ripped out when removing it.

The old t-shirt works well & is quite quick to get it set up before bed so I use this for work days I mainly use the scarf if I'm going out in the evening every decade or so & want to have my hair rolled through the day so it's bouncy for going out.

Oh there was something I saw on YouTube using tights . Put the bum part on the top of your head then use the legs to twist.
The curls would be tighter than the robe belt

< I haven't tried this , I don't think I own a pair of tights >

@GingerFoxInAT0phat I'd love to get some nice soft curls, your hair looks lovely like that! Did you use a dressing gown cord too?

Wilmalovescake · 25/04/2020 09:06

OOOOOOHHHHH......

cookiemonster5 · 25/04/2020 09:09

This method is decades old. More like hundreds of years old. I remember having my hair done like this when I was a flower girl over 30 years ago. In Scotland we call it having your hair in "clooties".

Old cloth of some sort torn into strips (old shirt or towel etc), wet hair, tie at the roots and wind hair around the cloth and leave overnight to dry. It's still done today for weddings and special events and is where the foam rollers evolved from.

0nwardsAndUpwards · 25/04/2020 09:24

I remember my DGM putting my hair in rags when I was younger (as @cookiemonster5 has described Smile) but the curls were too tight! I really want some looser curls but never been able to do them myself.
