Anyone using lockdown as an excuse to grow out their grey?

I have shoulder length dyed dark brown hair which is naturally 100% silver underneath - I know this because every couple of years I start to grow it out, then chicken out after a couple of months. Last time was just before Christmas - I caved in partially because I wanted to look decent over Christmas but also because I had a few events this spring which I didn't want to look skunky for. Of course now I'm kicking myself because everything's been cancelled anyway!

I also seem to have suddenly become allergic to absolutely everything I put on my face. I think it might be the SPF in my moisturiser/foundation because plain Nivea doesn't hurt, everything else leaves my face burning and red for days after. I'm concerned that as it's come on so suddenly, hair dye might also cause a reaction and I know how serious they can be.

I haven't dyed for 2 months and honestly, I'm not sure I'll bother again. One reason I usually cave in is that there's always something coming up I want to look nice for - wedding, party, etc - not an issue for months, so no temptation. Only fly in the ointment is DH who really doesn't like the idea of me being grey. I'm 47 and he's 36 so I can sort of understand it on one hand, on the other I think he's being silly - after all, he's going grey and I have absolutely no desire to see him dye it, which he has no desire to do anyway!

Anyone else considering doing this?

I've Caved!!!!

I saw myself yesterday out in the daylight, reflected in some plate glass windows, and my stripe just bloody glowed so much white it's luminous!

I felt old - I AM old!

Am sat here with a box dye on my head, wishing that I hadn't done it....but too late now!

Whattodowhattodooo · 30/04/2020 10:37

100% natural hair. All grey but with a darker shade too, with big pure grey streak at front. I'm 37. My mum is 63. I have more grey than her!! Started when I was 18.....I haven't coloured if for years!

I'm 40 and a natural blonde although my hair has darkened quite a bit over the years, and I've touched it up on occasion (handful of times) with a slightly brighter hue - but hardly noticeable regrowth so very close to its real shade. Very recently I've noticed it has started to lighten a bit on top - lo and behold, it's some grey/white hiding amongst the rest of my hair, I'd estimate 20% or so. Due to a bad haircut prior to lockdown that I couldn't face seeing constantly as it grew out, DH has used his clippers. It's so short now but I'm trying to channel Sharon Stone and will leave it to grow in whatever colour it likes. Good luck all.

Can I join in please?!

I dyed my hair box bright red from about 2010 until last September when I switched to a mid-brown. Never fully covered the red though so I have a “lovely” multi colour and tone effect going on 🙄.

I’m going to see how long I can last without the dye, my last dye was on the 27th Feb and that was a semi-permanent mid brown. Here is my hair up and down for comparison of how the badger line is doing!

I think I’m going to have patchy white/grey at best Sad

It's not patchy, it's multi tonal 🙂

Pasghetti · 30/04/2020 15:40

Watching with interest! Mine is prob about 50% grey now in mid forties it runs in my family. I asked DH should I go grey and he was very unenthusiastic. When I teased him about not wanting a grey haired wife he said quite seriously that he thinks grey hair can effect how people are perceived in the workplace. By people he of course means women 🙄 so I'm sitting on the fence for the time being.

Puppylucky · 30/04/2020 23:46

In my experience male partners can be hugely unsupportive about the grey transition - second only to hairdressers!
I made the leap 2 years ago and my DH was very uncomfortable about it particularly when it was growing out. It obviously struck a chord about the aging process which is fair enough. I feel a bit weird when I catch site of his old man furry shoulders!

Cocolapew · 01/05/2020 00:55

The app that people are using in the silver group is Perfect 365, obviously it won't know what colour you will be, but it gives you an idea of what you might look like

Nomorewine77 · 07/05/2020 12:42

After thinking long and hard, this morning I shaved off my hair and now am the proud owner of a silvery buzzcut!

justasking111 · 07/05/2020 14:04

The old man furry shoulders, chest hair etc. are amusing on my OH. But he still baulked at my going grey, cheeky bugger. They all want to pretend that despite their beer gut, grey hairy bodies they can still pull a foxy lady (rolls eyes) our ageing reminds them of their mortality.

Buzz cut, jakers that is brave.

Nomorewine77 · 07/05/2020 14:38

I know I'm in shock at myself! Probably regret the hell out of it in a week's time or something, but for now I feel quite liberated.
DH wisely has said nothing about my decision to go grey and looked a bit stunned at my new hairdo!
Lol at pulling foxy ladies avec beer guts and grey hairy bodies! So true.

woodhill · 08/05/2020 10:29

My hair feels better. It's softer and not so frizzy. It's quite interesting to see what colour (or lack of it) is growing through. Long way to go through

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/05/2020 10:33

No way, I dyed mine the other week.

DelphiniumBlue · 08/05/2020 11:47

Mine is very much like that of Mrsemcgregor.
I'm pondering sitting in the garden with lemon juice on my hair to make highlights to blend in. If only I could think of a way to do it so it doesn't spread over all my hair.... any ideas?

SoftBlocks · 08/05/2020 11:58

Yes. I have bombarded my hair with chemicals since my early teens and it’s time for a break. Even when I get expensive highlights it ruins the condition of my hair.
Mercedes your hair looks great.

cardoon · 09/05/2020 11:51

Anyone have any advice on which silver shampoo/conditioner to use to avoid brassiness?

cardoon · 09/05/2020 11:51

And to brighten?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/05/2020 14:24

I've just had some Bleach London Silver Shampoo delivered (not used it yet because I've already washed / conditioned my hair)

I could only get the shampoo delivered - the conditioner was Click&Collect

SouthWestmom · 09/05/2020 15:39

Having tried loads my favourite is milkshake shampoo for silver /grey

SunnyUpNorth · 11/05/2020 20:37

This article is interesting as a lot of the women featured are younger than the usual people they feature, they all look great. The before and after gallery is interesting.

SwedishEdith · 11/05/2020 22:41

Oh, god, that article doesn't help me as I think they all look better before. I've got a good few inches now and will keep at it to see how it looks. But the thought of not having darker hair again, if I stick at this, worries me slightly as I think I need the contrast. But, I'd also hate to have start all over again growing it out if I dye it again.

SouthWestmom · 11/05/2020 22:45

The article is dyed hair isn't it? None of them look like mine!

SwedishEdith · 11/05/2020 23:22

'Ditch the dye', it says.

woodhill · 12/05/2020 21:53

My hair isn't too bad at the back, it's not great at the front but I'll have a go for a while. hard when you can't have a decent haircut

SouthWestmom · 12/05/2020 23:00

Yes I know what it says, just not convinced. The author started by dying her hair ash grey. No info on the others but they all have long uniformly grey hair.
