Anyone using lockdown as an excuse to grow out their grey?

I have shoulder length dyed dark brown hair which is naturally 100% silver underneath - I know this because every couple of years I start to grow it out, then chicken out after a couple of months. Last time was just before Christmas - I caved in partially because I wanted to look decent over Christmas but also because I had a few events this spring which I didn't want to look skunky for. Of course now I'm kicking myself because everything's been cancelled anyway!

I also seem to have suddenly become allergic to absolutely everything I put on my face. I think it might be the SPF in my moisturiser/foundation because plain Nivea doesn't hurt, everything else leaves my face burning and red for days after. I'm concerned that as it's come on so suddenly, hair dye might also cause a reaction and I know how serious they can be.

I haven't dyed for 2 months and honestly, I'm not sure I'll bother again. One reason I usually cave in is that there's always something coming up I want to look nice for - wedding, party, etc - not an issue for months, so no temptation. Only fly in the ointment is DH who really doesn't like the idea of me being grey. I'm 47 and he's 36 so I can sort of understand it on one hand, on the other I think he's being silly - after all, he's going grey and I have absolutely no desire to see him dye it, which he has no desire to do anyway!

Anyone else considering doing this?

I stopped colouring mine a few years ago in my late thirties. I am the only person I know who is not stressing about their hair in lockdown. I think I look younger grey than I did with it dyed, I'm a little younger than you OP

It is silly to think grey is ageing these days, young celebrities, pop stars, actresses pay a lot of money to achieve the look. Once upon a time it was grey hair and a curly perm all women looked the same, now we stick to a hair length/style we like suits us. We can go pink, blue, purple, whatever we want. Jane Fonda had hers done recently and looked absolutely fabulous.

Mercedes519 , hard to tell, there's not an obvious demarcation between the top and the bottom, but the colour at the ends of my hair is a bit more intense. But then it's been dyed more. I'll have to wait and see.
The main problem is that the greyer of my temples is also much thinner than on the other side, and it looks almost bald in comparison.. The darker dye covered that up more. Have been playing around with headbands, but they are quite annoying tbh!

Fluora · 20/04/2020 22:38

Me! I've wanted to get off the hair dye treadmill for a while. I've clippered it really short and so have it all grey at once & am so glad I've done it. No more roots ever again.I need it to grow really quickly now though before I go back to work. I'm quite excited to see how it grows.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 21/04/2020 10:16

I had my hair cut short whilst travelling before the world changed so started to grow into grey, trimmed it myself and had white sides but still brown on top so yesterday I went blonde.... disaster it was more white and orange 😁 puta grey dye over and am now rocking a lovely silver grey So intend never to dye my hair again as it grows

OhMargo · 23/04/2020 19:41

I so envy the lovely white grey that some people have and it's stunning.

I'm only six weeks in and it's a dirty looking mix of dark and grey. But I think I'll stick with it for now.

Cut it myself, well chopped it and have it up in a clip all the time now. Getting used to the new look. Funny thing is, no one has commented on my badger, dirty mixed grey look at all. Ha ha.

GoodMorningEveryone · 23/04/2020 21:34

For those with "patchy" grey it can still look fantastic. I am grey/whiter at the front and then salt/pepper through the rest. I use Caryn Franklin and Paola Marella as inspiration. Though to be honest I chopped it to a pixie and grew it out that way.

I suppose I will give it a go, and see what happens.

Not too happy right now though. Mix of colours all over, and the grey is not the grey I would really like, mad!

Cocolapew · 23/04/2020 22:01

I've been dye free for a year now, I shaved mine to get rid of the bleach, but I did have very short hair anyway.
I've been growing it for a couple of months and the hardest thing about lockdown is staying away from the clippers!
If you're on Facebook Grombre UK, The Silver Revolution and The Silver Circle are all good groups.
I love mine, it's in brilliant condition and has thickened out a lot.
I don't look old, it's not skanky, I don't look like I've let myself go and it's not dull Hmm

morethanmeetstheeye · 23/04/2020 22:06

I started to grow mine out two years ago and have been dye free for about 6 months (lots of shorter haircuts along the way)
I absolutely love my hair. It's very silvery/pewtery with dark bits more at the back and I think it's great. I have really nice cuts done and that's what stops it (in my opinion) aging me too much.
I actually think it's made my skin look lighter and brighter as the hair dye was making me look sallow.
Best thing I ever did. I'm never putting chemical crap on my hair ever again!!!

OhMargo · 23/04/2020 22:15

I envy the silvery look. Gah!

Mine looks dull and well, just kind of awful. But since I don't really care at the moment it's a good time to try it out. It might get better in the sunlight eventually lol.

Wonder though (if anyone knows) if and when I can get back to the dye thing, could I go back to light brown/dark blonde after this!

TheLadyAnneNeville · 23/04/2020 22:25

@SelfIsolatingBeforeItWasCool You, and you’re hair look amazing. Just sayin’.

Holothane · 23/04/2020 22:26

I don’t mind going grey it’s natural and I like the bits you can see.

Ikeameatballs · 23/04/2020 22:44

I last had hair dye in mid-Dec. I have dark brown hair naturally but it’s dyed a slightly lighter and warmer colour with some lighter highlights. I’m trying to let the grey in, mostly it looks ok, perhaps a bit dull, the texture is annoying though it does look much better if I can get it smooth.

I think that after lockdown I’ll either continue as I am or have ashy highlights to try to brighten it up a bit. It’s quite long at the moment but I never have it shorter than shoulder length anyway so it’s going to take a looong time to get it without any base colour.

Scruffyoak · 23/04/2020 23:19

I am.

I don't feel unlucky. I am 33 and have lots of grey. I've just totally left it alone. Feels amazing to not stress and my hair feels better than it did with dye!

TheLadyAnneNeville · 24/04/2020 09:02

Am 58. No grey. Have a sister who has amazing grey hair (underneath blonde high/lowlights) My mum was silvery grey.

I am envious of those greying beautifully. People pay a fortune for grey hair.

Scruffyoak · 24/04/2020 11:14

I'm desperate for mine to be more grey...currently at 1/2 inch so reckon I can go through the worst by winter...

BubblesBuddy · 24/04/2020 11:53

I have been wondering..... is it possible to dye the reamining hair grey to match the root growth? I have done a home dye (mid chestnust gold brown) after a recommendation from a mumsnet poster and used esalon. It has worked very well but is obviously going to grow out again. I just wondered if my normal salon could dye the whole lot grey? Although I do think it will make me look older and my MIL did it when she reached 65 (many years ago now) and retired on less income. It aged her overnight. I am worried I will look older because I do not have high cheekbones and I am certainly not pretty - just average for nearly 65!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/04/2020 15:51

I have managed to take some of the copper-ey tones out of the lower half of my hair (mainly where I've overlapped the dye it'd built up a bit)

Plan now to buy some Bleach London Silver s/c and use that every other wash. It might not do much but I'm hoping it'll take out any random yellow bits and brighten the grey .

I usually get massive Hair Boredom round Easter and it's when I do drastic colour or length (or both Grin ) changes . But not this year .
No drastics .

FreakStar · 24/04/2020 15:58

If you grey, what do you all do with your eyebrows? Mine are non-existent so I pencil in with a taupe colour to match my dyed blonde hair.

Cocolapew · 24/04/2020 16:05

I still have black brows, there's a few grey coming thorough but I'll tint when there's a lot I think. I like dark brows with my hair.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/04/2020 16:33

If you grey, what do you all do with your eyebrows

Mine , like myself are a product of my era ( born '66 so the 80s was my time ......hence the brows were tweezered to oblivion and never forgave me )

I think taupe is ok, quite subtle .
I've got a NYX micro-line eyebrow pencil which is an ash/brown, no red at all. I use a Revolution 3 Day dye but the taupe one is reddish .

Deathraystare · 24/04/2020 16:49

Noooo!. It can look lovely but I think does not suit me. I have some hair dye but am too lazy at the moment to do it. I have bought some spray stuff for the roots. I can see it now, spraying it in my sauna of a room, it mixing with my sweat all down my face. Either that or a totally non natural looking piebald effect. Oh dear.

Freshing · 24/04/2020 19:28

I have managed to take some of the copper-ey tones out of the lower half of my hair (mainly where I've overlapped the dye it'd built up a bit).

@70isaLimitNotaTarget, what did you use to do that, please? And has it adversely affected the condition of your hair?

Blueuggboots · 24/04/2020 19:52

My OH is 38 and I'm older....I've got naturally brown hair with a sprinkling of grey round the edges.
My OH grew out her brown dye and is completely grey......it's really striking!!
