Anyone use a facial oil as opposed to moisturiser?

What’s your thoughts? I’ve read a few things online that oils are better for acne/oily combination skin - I don’t know how true this is?
I am interested in this as every moisturiser I try breaks me out or causes small under the skin bumps. I try & use oil free or no silicone ones but majority of them still upset my skin Sad

Spent years trying to find something suitable - fed up of keep trying new products now.

Not strictly an oil as it's a wax, but Jojoba oil is great. It isn't particularly cheap but H&B sometimes has offers.

missyB1 · 01/04/2020 18:31

I use both! But I have very dry skin. The oil I use is Boots botanics. It’s lovely and not greasy.

I had bumps under skin/occasional spots. Changing from a cream cleanser to a wash (initially to clear up outbreak) then onto oil/balm cleansers which helped massively. Also changed from 'normal' moisturiser to serums or oils. I'm old but skin has traditionally been on combo/oily side. Defo worth a try - but do look at the cleanser you're using, too.

Thanks everyone i wouldn’t even know where to start that’s the problem. I was told years ago because of my skin I should stick to oil free products, some people have said though maybe your stripping too many natural oils out of your skin that’s why my skin like it is. I just really don’t know 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Quicknamechange7 I’m currently using a cleanser (that I frequently change to as I never find something that’s really good for my skin) what wash do you use?

I use Dermalogica oil about 3x a week at night. I absolutely love it.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/04/2020 20:41

Waitrose Pure do a nice facial oil which is quite cheap if you want to give it a go.

neversleepagain · 01/04/2020 20:43

I was given Samadhi facial oil as a gift. I started using it a month ago and it's fabulous. I have oily skin but it's not made it more oily, it has actually helped make it less oily. It feels amazing to put onto the face and I love it.

ReginaGeorgeous · 01/04/2020 20:49

I have combination skin and got a Boots no 7 skincare gift box at Christmas that contained a bottle of facial oil and I don’t like it, it’s too greasy for me.

lpchill · 01/04/2020 20:49

I started using coconut oil (100% one from foods section in Asda/Lidl)as a moisturiser after toner and serum and it was a lot better for actually moisturise my skin. I would use it at night and in the morning I wouldn't need to wash or moisturise as it was so soft from it soaking in overnight. Moved to jojoba oil and it's so nice and not as thick as the coconut oil. Barley had any breakouts (do at the moment as have been eating a lot of crap atm) but occasionally will use coconut oil.

Yes, I use Marula Oil from The Ordinary and love it. It's hydrating and plumps up my face. Stopped using moisturiser a few years ago after following advice on here. Waste of money for me and oil is much better.

MikeUniformMike · 01/04/2020 20:57

I've tried the Waitrose one and it's ok.

B1rdinthebush · 01/04/2020 20:59

I'd recommend looking at the comedogenic scale of different oils. This basically tells you how likely they are to clog your pores. If you've got oily skin you want something at 0-1. I've had great results with hemp oil (which is 0 on the scale) in the past. Rub it on as a cleanser, removing with a warm damp face cloth. You can then add a few extra drops after for moisture if you need it. The Ordinary also do a squalane and hemi-squalane (lighter than the former) which rates at 0-1 on the scale. I use the hemp-squalane at night and find it great.

Deathraystare · 02/04/2020 08:01

I am using a Clarins one but also a moisturiser as my skin is very dry at the moment (a/c at work).

TwistyHair · 02/04/2020 08:04

I’ve just switched to Lyonsleaf products. Have a look. It takes a bit of getting used to using a balm to cleanse but it’s made my skin so nice. I’ve run out now and had to go back to The Ordinary stuff and my skin is horrible again. Lyonsleaf do tester pots you can buy for £1.99. Not if their facial oil unfortunately. Just of their cleansers and moisturiser

hipslikecinderella · 02/04/2020 08:09

Look at whether you actually need to moisturize.
My dermatologist advises serums and treatments like retinol etc but actual moisturizer, esp if you have oily or acne prone skin, is sold as a panacea and isn't needed by everyone at all.

vaz119 · 02/04/2020 10:00

@B1rdinthebush... Can I ask where you buy your hemp oil from?

PersonaNonGarter · 02/04/2020 10:15

I have oily skin and use a facial oil at night - it really does help.

I am using the Votary Seed Facial Oil. It is £70 (I know) and really it is very nice but not worth the price. Much better is the Blue Lotus oil from a Latina which is about £30 and lasts for ages and is for oily skin.

I would never put facial oil on in the morning as make up would slide off. I use a water based moisturiser in the morning (at the moment Sunday Riley Tidal Cream).

B1rdinthebush · 02/04/2020 11:49

@vaz119 I've gotten it from Holland and Barrett before but you could try any other health food type place. As long as it's 100% hemp oil, you're good to go. Would recommend keeping it in the freezer too as this keeps it in good nick. I started using it to cleanse and moisturise when I had a bout of perioral dermatitis and it worked wonders.

vaz119 · 02/04/2020 12:16

Brilliant thanks @B1rdinthebush. I wasn't sure if some were for cooking 🙈

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/04/2020 13:38

I use Skin rosehip oil - it's lovely.

Muminabun · 02/04/2020 13:41

I have combination skin and chose one in the middle of the spectrum for pore clogging as I did want a bit of clogginess to help with dryness. I mix a few drops of apricot oil with a basic moisturiser instead of night cream a few times a week. It helps to calm oily skin breaks outs but too much can clog pores. A little bit of oil goes a very long way as only a few drops are needed so don’t worry too much about price. Jojoba is supposed to be most similar to sebum and I will try that next. Superdrug do a face oil for oily skin in their simply pure range which I haven’t tried but the reviews are really good.

Tinks15 · 02/04/2020 16:36

Thank you everyone for all your posts. I think I’m going to go ahead & buy an oil. How do I know what to order though? There are so many oils out there. What’s the difference between jojoba oil & rosehip oil etc?

I don’t want to spend a lot at the moment in case I don’t get on with it.

@TwistyHair thank you - will take a look at Lyonsleaf

Sukin here, not Skin! It's often on offer, so much cheaper than the Clarins I used before, and nicer too.

TwistyHair · 02/04/2020 16:56

@Tinks15 Hope you like it. I wasn’t convinced because oil cleansing is so different. You just sort of use a flannel instead. I just cut up some old muslins because I didn’t want to spend any more money before I knew if I liked it.

Crabbo · 02/04/2020 17:02

I just switched a few week ago to the bysarah facial oil - seems good so far. I mostly switched because I’m lazy and I really only want to use one product. I was dubious in the first few days because I had a small breakout (have oily/combination skin and loads of things give me spots) but I think it was just a one off while my skin adjusted. I think it has reduced redness and if I do get a small bump/spot then it seems to help it go away much quicker than a usual which I was really surprised at. I would recommend it.
