Hair never feels properly clean

I'm finding lately that no matter what shampoo I use my hair never feels properly clean. It feels quite coated (I don't use styling products) and nasty.

In the last few months I've tried

-Pantane miceller water
-Citrus head and shoulders
-Vozine
-Elvive nutri gloss

The only one that leaves my hair feeling clean is the Vozine but it leaves my hair a nasty dry mess too.

Any recommendations? I can't use Tresemee in any form as it irritates my skin badly!

Solid shampoo? What can I try next?

Thank you!

You might not like this idea.....Every other time I wash my hair I use Fairy liquid. Then I deep condition the ends. It works but it might not be the best thing to do to your hair. I have tried other "clarifying" shampoos but none seem to work as well as good old Fairy liquid.

Oh and I have very sensitive skin as well as eczema and this does not irritate my skin at all.

GreenTulips · 01/04/2020 14:30

Find one without silicon in it.

Everything else coats the hair

NekoShiro · 01/04/2020 14:31

How often do you wash your hair? Also all those really drying products might be making your hair over produce oil, vicious cycle, you use strong stuff to get rid of the oil so your body makes strong oil to fight against the sudden dryness.

Clarifying shampoo is great for lifting excess product that normal shampoos can't lift.

AutumnRose1 · 01/04/2020 14:34

OP, like you, I don’t use styling products

The products that work for me are the most basic with SLS. But then I use a leave in conditioner.

I accidentally bought SLS free shampoo and will give it away when I get the chance.

I have greasy roots and use conditioner with silicone. If I want to get my hair really clean I use a couple of different shampoos and scrub the scalp two or three times. I then liberally condition and use a leave in conditioner and my hair is fine and in good condition. I have heard quite a bit from these boards that washing up liquid is an effective clarifying treatment for dull greasy hair so it may be worth a try.

It depends- every other day to every third day. I have eczema on my legs and only a shower so can't do it every day. Wondering if it's mineral residue because I live in an area with really hard water.

It's probably your water either too hard or too soft (Google it) I get very oily hair it's hormonal and not controllable by shampoo products although some clean better than others. But when I lived in another country my hair never felt clean and I found out our water had too much deposits in it which coated the hair I got a filter for shower head and it got better not perfect but better!

Tinkletwat · 01/04/2020 15:30

I've had a bad time with Pantene and Elvive in the past due to all the silicone. Aussie used to be good until they changed the ingredients, Klorane is a favourite in my house as it seems to clean really well and you don't need a lot. I tried a shampoo bar recently and felt filthy for days but others seem to have more success.

ZaraW · 01/04/2020 15:33

I use clarifying shampoo once a month. Currently using Paul Mitchell. No way would I be using Fairy Liquid.

SkaLaLand · 01/04/2020 15:37

You can wash everyday op, unless you have issues with mobility? Lean forward I to your shower and wash your hair.

Spanneroo · 01/04/2020 15:44

I second fairy liquid.

Every wash for a few weeks, with an oil-based conditioner for the ends. After that, switch to a silicone-free shampoo.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 01/04/2020 15:50

I occasionally use sild/delicates wash, intended for clothes. I presume that this is more gently than washing up liquid, but have no proof Grin

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 01/04/2020 15:50

Silk, not sild.

didyoueverdancewiththedevil · 01/04/2020 15:53

The water in my area is really hard.

If I use any normal shampoo - and I have tried loads - my hair feels horrible. It feels like I haven't washed it at all and its really hard to brush. As soon as I wash it with Fairy its fine. Its really odd but unless I do this my hair is so tangled and clogged up with crap that I pull lots of hair out just trying to brush it.

The only actual shampoo that sort of gives me the same result is Tigi Bed Head - the lime green one.

Mummyshark2018 · 01/04/2020 16:01

Do you wash it twice with shampoo? And have you tried head and shoulders- clean and fresh?

EatingIsMyHobby · 01/04/2020 16:12

I use T-gel shampoo or another coal tar based one when my hair feels like this. I do get a dry itchy scalp anyway so it helps that issue too for me. I follow the shampoo with my usual conditioner. It definitely helps me get rid of that horrible sticky, build-up type hair.

Lampan · 01/04/2020 16:15

The blue Lush shampoo bar would be good for your hair but be warned it will REALLY dry the skin on your hands if you use it daily

PippaPegg · 01/04/2020 16:18

Wash it daily with only warm water for 6 weeks. Then wash with a non silicone shampoo once a week.

That will knock the excess oil cycle on the head.

Sparky87 · 01/04/2020 16:33

Try the elvive Miracle clay for oily roots and dry ends. I really like it.

MoltonSilver · 01/04/2020 16:56

Fairy liquid maybe 3 times a year does the trick for me

MikeUniformMike · 01/04/2020 18:19

Just a thought, but are you using enough shampoo. I used to live in a soft water area and may hair was horrible after I moved away. I now use about 3 times as much shampoo and my hair is clean.

Stuckinstressville · 01/04/2020 21:38

Johnson's gold baby shampoo. Or boots product remover shampoo.

It could be a type of dermatitis? I had a patch post both kids weirdly.. a greasy section!

QuestionableMouse · 01/04/2020 23:41

Thanks. I'll try these ideas.

Last time it felt properly clean was when I was Hull for a few days. Stayed in the Premier Inn which had a fantastic shower so I'm wondering if it's a combination of things.
