Lockdown Locks: To Grey or Not To Grey?

Sorry if this has already been covered. I'm at the point where I'd normally top up my roots.
I have a small amount of dye which I could use to keep it at bay but realistically don't know when I'll be able to buy more.
Very much a first world problem but I'm seriously considering letting nature take her course.
I'm mid 40s with naturally curly and high lighted mid to dark brown hair. I'd say if ii let it grow through I'd be about 1/3 grey.
I currently have about an inch regrowth. Most visible at front and through the parting.
I can't use stuff like paint on hair Mascara, dry shampoo etc, it just looks dreadful on my curly hair!
Any thoughts?

Luckily I bought a few boxes of my usual light golden brown hair colour in a batch off ebay just before the lockdown startes. So I'm ok for several months. Tried the "letting it go grey" route a couple of times before, but it always looked a mousey patchy mess and aged me by about 10 years. So I wouldn't want to do that. Not yet anyway.

Sarahlou63 · 06/04/2020 16:37

My brown/grey roots are starting to show so I've borrowed some clippers (whilst maintaining a social distance) and my DP is going to shave my head tonight (1 inch). Terrified and excited in equal measure!

SouthWestmom · 06/04/2020 16:44

Oooh exciting sarahlou

ginghamstarfish · 06/04/2020 16:50

I stopped a few years ago, now I like my natural colour, dark blonde with about 30% grey, would love to have MORE grey/silvery/white hair, but I seem to be greying very slowly although I'm quite old.

Oddgirlout · 06/04/2020 17:25

Ooh @Sarahlou63 can you post a picture afterwards? It's exciting that you're chopping it, it's going to feel so light and easy to look after!

Sarahlou63 · 06/04/2020 17:32

@Oddgirlout - depends on how it looks!! Grin

Oddgirlout · 06/04/2020 18:06

That's seems reasonable!

Weepingwillows12 · 06/04/2020 18:10

See I am quite tempted to dye mine a ridiculous colour given we are stuck inside, noone will see me and am furloughed for a couple of months.....sort of missed the teenage rebellion bit so thinking 40s rebellion. I have been going grey since 18 so used to dying it a boring sensible brown.

trulyconfuseddotcom · 16/04/2020 10:53

Hello - just to say that this thread has given me the inspiration I needed to try letting the dye grow out and they grey come in, so thanks! I turned 50 in Feb and that feels like a turning point but was still wobbling a bit on actually doing it - but now, despite having loads of dye in the house, I am going for it. I think it may also give me the impetus to rethink my wardrobe choices - there's quite a lot of grey in there and I feel like grey hair might require more vivid colour in the clothing and accessory department so am quite looking forward to that too.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/04/2020 11:06

I haven't dyed mine for about two months now, maybe a bit longer. I box dye anyway and have got a box, but thought I'd use this time to see what happens with it. I've been toying with dying it purple but my hair is dark and I don't think it would work. So the plan is to just leave it alone for a while and then go and ask advice from a hair dresser on the other side.

Sissymate2 · 16/04/2020 15:18

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie
Hey, you could go for the hombre look with grey from the roots down to the previous color...maybe start a new trend. Ever heard of RECESSION hair made famous by Gen Y-ers? If not...after the recession hit in 08 they couldn't afford going to the salon, so they had to let their roots grow out to their natural color....well, you could start " 'RONA hair"Grin very exotic

StuckBetweenDarknessAndLight · 18/04/2020 00:36

I'm so glad I found this thread! My brunette hair has been commented on for years and in my mid-late 40s I think it still suits me but I've been conscious for the last few years that it won't forever. And I am so sick of the hair appointments and covering up root growth with spray. I'm about an inch at the top because I missed my last appointment so did a root retouch on top but the back and sides are nearer 2 inches. I bounce between interest in seeing what happens and thinking fuck it, now's the time to stop being a slave and not wanting to see my face framed in grey and realising my age! But I think strong make up could counter that?

trulyconfuseddotcom · 18/04/2020 09:16

Hi stuck - I joined a FB group called The Silver Circle to motivate and inspire me, it's a US site but seems very popular and supportive. I think a bit more make up might help to feel a bit less washed out, at least til one gets used to it. It's going to be a long process but hey, no time like the present!

OhTheRoses · 18/04/2020 09:44

My colour was due early April. Am 60 in a few months and natural colour was wild rodent! Been highlighted since I was about 16. In recent years have been havimg tjree colours put in every five weeks but last time I said let's not put it all the way through I want some of the natural colour to come through and that has helped massively with the regrowth.

So far there's about an inch and I reckon it's about 30/40% grey and more even than I thought. It's a darkish inky grey but more pleasing than I'd thought although not breathtaking stunning silver like @cocolapew I've been using a violet shampoo since lockdown.

Cocolapew · 18/04/2020 11:07

Thank you OhTheRoses.
I've always had very short hair but I'm trying to grow it for the first time in years because of the mix of colours and it's got thicker since I've stopped the dye.
This was just before lockdown, my hair is darker towards the back and the back itself a good mixture.
It's very hard to stay away from the clippers when I'm stuck in the house all day 🙈

Cocolapew · 18/04/2020 11:13

As well The Silver Circle The Silver Revolution and Grombre UK are good fb groups too.

Cheesypea · 18/04/2020 11:31

I stopped colouring my hair in 2016. Ive never had so many complements. I had to get rid of alot of clothing that suited my brown helmit hair. The transition stage was brutal and i must have spent a fortune on root touch up.

OhTheRoses · 18/04/2020 11:37

I'll have a look at the fb groups thank you.

Perhaps with all the money I save on hair colour, I might treat myself to a House of Colour analysis (or similar company) for clothes and make-up Smile.

BestIsWest · 19/04/2020 10:44

Can anyone recommend a violet shampoo? Will it tone down the brassiness of the colour (light brown) I’m growing out as well?

Caaarrrl · 19/04/2020 11:03

I only became aware of quite how grey I really am last night! I always colour my own hair. It's usually dark red or dark plum. Since spending a fortune on a bathroom renovation, I can't risk colouring my own hair because despite doing for about 30 years, I'm very messy. So I was going to start getting it done at the salon, but obviously that didn't happen.

Last night, under the new lights in the bathroom, I could see how grey I am. I never let the roots show so I haven't seen this much of my own for 30 years.

Decided last night to leave it and see how it goes.
