Lockdown Locks: To Grey or Not To Grey?

Sorry if this has already been covered. I'm at the point where I'd normally top up my roots.
I have a small amount of dye which I could use to keep it at bay but realistically don't know when I'll be able to buy more.
Very much a first world problem but I'm seriously considering letting nature take her course.
I'm mid 40s with naturally curly and high lighted mid to dark brown hair. I'd say if ii let it grow through I'd be about 1/3 grey.
I currently have about an inch regrowth. Most visible at front and through the parting.
I can't use stuff like paint on hair Mascara, dry shampoo etc, it just looks dreadful on my curly hair!
Any thoughts?

My hair is highlighted/ bleached, it’s in a terrible state. My root regrowth is mainly grey now, although my natural colour was a lightish brown. I’ve ordered a kit from esalon. Hoping to go a light auburn.

famousforwrongreason · 29/03/2020 13:34

I’d love to hear how the esalon people get on, I’ve read very mixed reviews, good luck

I was ill this time last year and shaved my hair off and stopped dyeing it. It's in much better condition and has thickened out.
It isn't a bit aging on me, it suits my skintone much better.

I'm wondering about letting it grey naturally and then shifting to henna afterwards as I understand it can interact badly with standard dyes. It will be interesting to see how it looks!

ScrapThatThen · 29/03/2020 14:05

Well, I forgot a hair appointment 4 weeks ago and the rearranged one was of course cancelled. I was considering two more years of colouring (I'm 48) but I honestly think this is probably the time. I've recently ditched make up too. I lost 12 kg recently which was slow and not noticeable and am aiming for 8-12 more if it doesn't all go to rats with the stress. Am wondering if relatives will recognise me if I go from blonde shoulder length to grey pixie cut as well 😁

ChoporNot · 29/03/2020 22:37

I did it a few years back. I did it via a pixie and lots of support on here. You cannot get the pixie cut at the moment, obviously, but maybe a great chance to let the roots grow out and get it done when we get out of here Grin.

I have not regretted it once and love my streaky grey curls. V old thread here- which I have updated relatively recently with my current grey curls. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2316020-To-chop-or-not-Honest-opinions-please?pg=6

I've just cut all of mine off very short. I cut my own hair anyway, but it was in a mid length Bob. No color left in it now. I keep looking in my mirror and hyperventilating slightly. I've only the facilities for a strip down wash in boiled water, so had to take it off short. I'm thinking vasilene since I've no styling products, and perhaps just shave it entirely if it won't stop sticking up. It's stupid of me, noone will see me, and if they do, I don't much care how I look, but am vaguely feeling miserable about it.

Scruffyoak · 30/03/2020 23:38

I'm totally leaving mine to go grey now.

Scruffyoak · 30/03/2020 23:38

Hoping to emerge from lockdown into wearing a hat until it's looking ok but inwant to grow grey in

LindsayDentonLOD · 02/04/2020 17:55

Had a phone call from the colourist at esalon, he advised me that the colour would not look good on my hair, as my hair is so light, that the solution could over take or go pinky and not what I would expect, so he’s advised me to go a light copper brown to start with and then see how we go. I will post photos when I’ve done it.

Dowser · 02/04/2020 19:52

I had my streaks put in end of feb for my holiday in Tenerife in March
It’s still ok
Still got lots of brown and bits of grey coming through.
Not ready for grey yet
If ever

Colourmylife1 · 02/04/2020 21:50

@Cocolapew I love your colour!

Cocolapew · 03/04/2020 01:07

Thank you 🙂

Whitney168 · 03/04/2020 09:26

Perfect time to try it, lots will be in the same boat.

(Shrug) It's just hair, nothing is permanent - if you hate it you can always dye it back later.

(52, dyed for the last time a week before my 50th birthday and now entirely grey. If I could still be my preferred shade of reddy brown, I'd probably have kept it dyed, but the root growth was unmanageable and there's no getting away from fact that it didn't suit my skin tone any more either. This is far more flattering, and I genuinely get so many compliments on it. It will look utterly crap by the time I"m several months overdue a haircut though LOL, but then it would have done dark too.)

Coronacurls · 03/04/2020 12:24

I let my colour grow out a couple of years ago - never thought I would be happy grey but actually I love it! The condition is soooo much better and with using the Curly Girl method and a curl specialist hairdresser I've finally found peace with my curls.

Sturmundcalm · 05/04/2020 17:30

i stopped dying last year - May was my last appt. i say go for it but brace yourself for the waaah moments! my hair is actually much less white than i thought and it's been really interesting to see it come through.

and if you really hate it you can always change your mind in future... i'm 46 and not convinced it's really making any difference to how old i look - it's the wrinkles that do that!

Menopauseandteensdontmix100 · 05/04/2020 17:36

I also have naturally curly hair mine was auburny and last autumn i decided to go very much lighter (blondey) and gradually grow out the grey. I have just had a toner put on the last couple of times. I am really goong to go for it with lock down and see what it looks like. Its a good time as grey hair is still fairly fashionable amongst younger people and now with Corona Virus i am not going out anywhere.

MacBlank · 05/04/2020 17:55

Let it grey, let it grey!

No, seriously you'll love it. Then go light brown/dark mousey blonde, you won't regret it.

The lighter colour will also stop the grey looking quite so bad when you get regrowth.

The Mrs (had some.loss from cancer treatment) and we used the largest clipper setting (a no8) and all her grey has come through, which is (at the mo) more multi-tonal than just white/grey. She was waiting for a reason to wait it out to go lighter, but now she's like this, she said she may not even consider dying it again.

I personally have never coloured my goatee despite it being very grey, and now much more grey than brown ... Least the odd ginger strand has gone 😜 for me it's my.little age sign, as I have very short (skinhead) hair, so Grey's aren't really showing at all, and I'd like to think I still have a youngish face??

SwedishEdith · 05/04/2020 18:04

I'm seeing what happens. Have always dyed my own hair anyway and have 2 boxes in the house so not worried from that pov. But perfect time (for me) to see what happens. The ends compared to the roots are bad anyway due to dye build up so am glad of chance to grow it enough that they can all be cut off before I see what's left and dye it a lighter shade. I'm not wasting the box dyes while no-one can see or cares.

BestIsWest · 05/04/2020 18:27

I have about an inch of grey now. Pleased to see a bit of a white streak appearing at the front.
To be honest, I’ve been struggling with sinus headaches after dyeing for the last year so it’s a relief not to have to.
The cut is something else though - I usually have a pixie which I fear may turn into a mullet unless I take the scissors to it myself.

SouthWestmom · 05/04/2020 18:44

My mum is using the lockdown to see what her grey is like. I gave up ages ago and then kept faffing and cutting and highlighting etc.
Decided to leave it well alone and get it longer - mine is a nice white grey and pale grey mix.
I did start a thread about feeling bored and then cu back in an undercut - so pleased I didn't give in.
I think grey hair is ageing because despite the current trend it is only dyed grey on slebs or pretty young things that we see. Then it's people over 70 really. And the short tight curls or sensible Pru Leith cut isn't flattering s

Ceit · 05/04/2020 20:11

I had similar thoughts but then had a bunch of video calls booked and ended up colouring again.

lightsout · 05/04/2020 21:31

I stopped dying mine almost 4 years ago now. It’s been very liberating and I love it. My mother in law is horrified though. Can’t please everyone so do what’s right for you... there are lots of supportive groups out there with other folk who are embracing their natural colour for when you have a wobble x

thriftyhen · 05/04/2020 21:58

I started going grey in my mid 30's. I'm now in my mid 50's. I've never dyed my hair; never fancied putting chemicals on it and too thrifty to spend money on hair dye or hair cuts for that matter (I cut my own short hair) and also I rather like it!

Mommyme74 · 05/04/2020 22:09

Hey ladies, just let it go. I started going gray at 16 and spent many years, money and time a slave to coloring. At 44 I decided to quit coloring cold turkey. Two years later fully silver gray and I love it. I get far more compliments on my hair now than I ever did with expensive salon color. This is your time ladies.. let the tinsel shine😊
