Would you spend £700 on a little black dress?

Would you?

Because I am tempted and I have NEVER spent that kind of money on clothes.

Its Stella McCartney and when I tried it on I looked better than I could ever have imagined.

I have several big parties coming up, I need an outfit and I want to reward myself to getting back to a size 10 for the first time since I was 18.

Is it a gross thing to do?

That Matthew Williamson dress - under the measurements given, a size 14 is a 32" bust!

When I was a size 8, I had no money. Now that I have some money, I am, um, considerably bigger. And 'good' clothes (I'm not aiming at Matthew Williamson here) just don't come in 'real' sizes.

Sorry but I don't think it looks anything special. And £700 is a lot for something 'not that special'.

You could have loads of new stuff for that money.

janeitebus · 07/09/2007 20:33

Sorry but I agree with Custardo. And the dress looks as if it would date quite quickly. That much money should be a long term investment imho; not just a feel good right now thing. I'd go for a cheaper dress and a night in a fabby hotel to wear it! You could probably afford some really great shoes too and still have change from £500!!

paddingtonbear1 · 07/09/2007 20:47

also agree with custy, sorry. I love clothes and spend too much on them, but I'd never spend that much on 1 item - unless I was a millionare! Alas that's not very likely. Even if I loved something I couldn't spend that much ..

twinsetandpearls · 09/09/2007 16:56

I have in the past before children, I am not sure I would do now infact I wouldn't as we don;t have it to spare, would go up to about £300. But if I had it to spare I would do.

ledodgy · 09/09/2007 16:59

No I wouldn't. If I were you i'd take the pic to a dressmaker so they can copy it for you.

twinsetandpearls · 09/09/2007 16:59

I would be nore likely to spend it on a classic item that doesn't date, so for example I have spent silly amounts of money on hadbags but I still use them years later.
But it dies all depend what your cash flkow situation is.

EscapeFrom · 09/09/2007 16:59

If it was a little black dress that would knock four dress sizes of my waist, 10 years off my face, and 2 babies off my pelvic floor, yes.

Otherwise, no.

twinsetandpearls · 09/09/2007 16:59

But for getting from a size 18 - 10 you deserve a treat - amy tips for somoene trying a similart feat.

widgypog · 09/09/2007 21:22

can I just be the voice of reason here. I am a dry cleaner and see many expensive dresses ruined after one wear as generally you (or people around you ) are drinking and a drink spill on a very delicate dress can be fatal. So if you can afford or justify £700 for potentially one wear..go ahead..fab dress btw

Mars · 09/09/2007 21:25

Tell you what... if I get you a Primark knock off for a tenner you could give me the £690! Good deal?

Perhpas if I had the money but not on that dress. Don't think it will last for a few years as will date easily. and don't like it

It's absolutely effing gorgeous, if you can afford it, buy it and enjoy every minute of it!
Yes, it is obscene spending £700 on a dress when there are people starving in the world, but not as obscene as buying a pair of jeans for £4 iykwim!!
BUY IT!!! I'm jealous as hell, I'd l;ove it!
