Would you spend £700 on a little black dress?

Would you?

Because I am tempted and I have NEVER spent that kind of money on clothes.

Its Stella McCartney and when I tried it on I looked better than I could ever have imagined.

I have several big parties coming up, I need an outfit and I want to reward myself to getting back to a size 10 for the first time since I was 18.

Is it a gross thing to do?

You know, imo £700 isn't much if it's on something that makes you feel fantastic.

I really think you should buy it.

bluejelly · 07/09/2007 16:06

It's really nice, go for it

WideWebWitch · 07/09/2007 16:06

And if that's what you'd normally spend in a year then I think you're entitled to this splurge. Esp as it's not replacing your daughter's shoes or anything!

I've spent £700 on

2 nights in a hotel
1 night in an hotel
one date (long story)
dinners out in a few weeks
(>£700 but)on 3 days in London with ds
a watch (ooh, first time I had something to show for it in this list!)

I'm trying to make you feel better and buy it!

CountessDracula · 07/09/2007 16:12

I wouldn't spend £700 on a dress like that (not because I don't LOVE it which I do but it is not really a classic design)

artichokes · 07/09/2007 16:12

WWW - DH just heard that I claimed here to normally spend £700 in a year. He spat his tea across the room. We have agreed that I should add a qualifying note along these lines:

  • The figure of £700 annual expenditure on clothes does not include shoes, boots, or other footwear, make-up, jewellery and bags.

wow it looks gorgeous - go for it!!

pinkspottywellies · 07/09/2007 16:17

Oh god it's only £685! That's loads less than £700 and makes it absolutely fine. I think it's lovely and if it makes you feel fabulous then go for it!

morningglory · 07/09/2007 17:06

I have spent more than 700 pounds on a black dress. It was a Mark Jacobs dress back in 2001, and it was worth every penny. I have worn it many times since then, and it's a design classic.

morningglory · 07/09/2007 17:09

What I was trying to say was get it as long as it looks as great on as it does on the mannequin.

Yes for all the reasons below and it sounds like you are going to have plenty of chances to wear it this year if you have lots of parties to go to. However, with it being the tulip shape I think it will date and that would make it a 'no' for me personally.

There must be something in the air at the moment because I have very uncharacteristically splurged on a handbag. Citing many of the reasons below as justification, apparently it will be the handbag that I am buried with as I will never have/be able to afford another.

I agree with Countess Dracula - it is a gorgeous dress, but the shape might make it look rather dated in a couple of years. If that's not a concern, go for it and look stunning now

heifer · 07/09/2007 17:31

sh*t wrong link....

How the other 'arf live

Tortington · 07/09/2007 17:34

i think that kind of money spent on clothes is quite frankly obscene - i couldnt justify it - no matter how much money i had i'm afraid

Roskva · 07/09/2007 17:34

lol - and there was me wondering where a house comes into things

Pinkchampagne · 07/09/2007 17:37

at the price of the Matthew Williamson dress!!

The last dress I bought was £18 in the sale!

artichokes · 07/09/2007 18:18

I know its not a classic - the tulip style is a 2007 thing - but that is one of the things I like about it - it makes me look "with it". I look like someone who keeps up with fashion and I have not looked like that for years. I look like a thin person who keep sup with fashion. I think that is worth £700 just this once (although I also sort of agree it is obscene to spend that on one piece of clothing ).

If you are willing to spend 700 pounds on a great LBD, have you seen what the other options are? I'm all for spending the money, as long as you get something that you are really happy with now and in the future.

The way I price clothes is price/number of times used. I'd rather spend more money (ok, this is much more money) on something I'll get lots of use out of, then something you'll wear a couple of seasons and toss (if it lasts that long).

MummyDarlingSausage · 07/09/2007 19:19

yes i would spend that on a dress i liked. if you like it and can afford no reason not to buy it (oh and as for maybe not staying a size 10 bugger that! you only live once )

nangnangnang · 07/09/2007 19:24

It's absolutely gorgeous. Buy it. I spent silly money on a Matthew Williamson dress a couple of years ago and it's still exciting to put it on now (even if the last time was only for DP's work do - pearls before swine, darlings).

Hideehi · 07/09/2007 19:37

Hmm i agree with the others if i had £700 and it makes you feel stunning then go for it.
But I would say have a bloody good look around first becaus I doubt you can take it back if you find something nicer in a couple of weeks and it is very early in the season.
