Really dry and cracked skin in hands

That’s it really- I tend to get dry skin in winter but have just started to get increasingly dark skin on my hands. The skin actually feels tight when I clench my fists and the palms are white with dry flakes.

My scallop started getting very dry and itchy today too.

No new moisturiser, soap, conditioner etc... is there anything I can use? Do I need to drink more water?

I am trying the Aveeno hand cream for very dry skin but it’s not much better (but only using of for a couple of day’s now). I keep my gloves on when I’m outside and don’t wash dishes in the sink.

Dry skin in my hands - not dark! Quite the opposite - all white flaky skin.

Scallop! Scalp! I’ve got to keep a close eye on my autocorrect! Dry scallops are equally bad.

Hi OP, I have dry hands and found aveeno greasy and s funny smell. Bought Nursem from boots online and found it to be excellent. Worth a try!

Humina · 07/03/2020 23:19

Atrixo in the green tub is good.

Gotthetshirt23 · 07/03/2020 23:23

Body shop hemp and they also do a scalp cleanser but not sure what it's called

Lordfrontpaw · 07/03/2020 23:30

When I rub my hands together it’s like someone sanding a brick! I’m tempted to try a thick cream and some rubber gloves

  • or maybe for for a Manicure?

Neutrogena is brilliant for hands. Try a shampoo for sensitive scalp.

Drogonssmile · 07/03/2020 23:42

I have horrendous eczema on my hands that's flares up at this time of year. I also work in dermatology.

Aveeno cream thickly applied and cotton gloves (can bulk buy on Amazon or EBay) overnight works wonders.

Drogonssmile · 07/03/2020 23:44

This is the one I use.

Really dry and cracked skin in hands

Stop using anti bac hand wash.

Use gentle soap and use intensive hand cream after every wash- keep tubs of it everywhere!

tortiecat · 07/03/2020 23:47

You poor thing! I use this stuff and would recommend:
www.okeeffesco.co.uk/products/okeeffes-working-hands/
Not sure what to recommend for your scalp (or scallops) though!
I hope it gets better soon.

AliMonkey · 07/03/2020 23:48

Aveeno is the one cream that works for me - took a few days but swear by it now. Actually the Body Shop hemp one works but I hated the smell.

Kind Natured shampoo works best for my itchy scalp whereas Boots cheap anti dandruff works best for DS.

Silverstreaks · 07/03/2020 23:57

Lidl SOS concentrated hand cream is very good and cheap enough to have one on your bag, car, by the sinks etc.
O'Keefes working hands in the green tub is good. The texture is weird but does sink in. I've had it in the tube too, it's incredibly bhard to get it out. About 8 quid a pop.
I have white patches on my palms and a persistent dry/sometimes cracked patch on one index finger at this time of year. Cleaning products make it worse.

TinyCheese · 08/03/2020 09:35

Anti-bacterial soaps originally caused dermatitis on my hands, which sounds what OP also has. Now many more soaps and Fairy liquid also cause irritation. When it's really bad, I find that only over the counter steroid cream works, I don't need a lot of it and a couple of applications are usually enough. I also swear by the original Aveeno cream. OP, you need to find out what causes your irritation and avoid it. Clear liquid detergents are the worst for me. I think there should be a lot more publicity about the risks of anti-bacterial soaps. Good luck!

AnnaMagnani · 08/03/2020 09:39

Keep your hands out of water as much as possible - OK hard with coronavirus but use rubber gloves for cleaning, washing up etc.

Normal soap may be easier on your hands than liquid soap.

And hand cream every single time you wash your hands.

Lordfrontpaw · 08/03/2020 09:41

OH! You are a genius!

They have antibacterial soap at work now (just this week) - its a high st pharmacy brand that says it’s for sensitive skin but maybe there’s something in that. That could be it! Thank goodness- I’ve never had hands actually feel like they are going to split before (sorry if anyone is eating breakfast) - they feel like sausages in a pan!

But better today - I slathered handcream on before I went to sleep but must have been rubbing my eyes as I’m all a bit out of focus this morning. 😳

I found no moisturisers worked properly for my hands. It got to the stage when I'd clench a fist and my skin would tear.
I now put nipple balm (Lansinoh) on my hands after washing them and before bed. It's been the only thing that's worked properly

Lordfrontpaw · 08/03/2020 09:43

Yes - like bursting sausages! Isn’t it horrible?

OP posts:
eekitsamouse · 08/03/2020 09:45

It is awful!

TinyCheese · 08/03/2020 09:51

FlowersFlowersFlowers I fear that with the corona virus everyone will be using antibacterial soap which would not solve the problem and will cock up people's skin!

beanaseireann · 08/03/2020 09:52

I've been handwashing so much because of this Coronavirus and my skin is dry anyway that I've developed a split in my thumb which is very painful and an entry point for germs. I've been slathering it with Sudocream and Savlon. Because of where it is plasters/ band Aids won't stay on.
Usually Palmers Coconut hand cream ( smells divine) is brilliant.

AnnaMagnani · 08/03/2020 10:41

Sudocrem is very drying so going to make your dry hands worse. Honestly most cuts will get better on their own lifetime in a Savlon free house You are just pissing your skin off by sticking Savlon on it and stopping it doing it's healing thing.

Facade1983 · 08/03/2020 11:27

Lush Dream Cream for your hands. Childs Farm shampoo for your scalp - the rhubarb one, not the strawberry one, which smells vile.

beanaseireann · 08/03/2020 11:33

Thanks AnnaMagnani but I was outside working and was fearful of germs getting into the small but bloody painful split on thee tip of my thumb so wanted to speed up the healing. I put Savlon on before going out.
I didn't know Sudocream on the small cut would be drying. I thought it was an antiseptic cream and with the Coronavirus around too it made me anxious re infection.

smileannie · 08/03/2020 13:53

Slather on Elizabeth 8 hour cream before you go to bed at night.
