Really dry and cracked skin in hands

That’s it really- I tend to get dry skin in winter but have just started to get increasingly dark skin on my hands. The skin actually feels tight when I clench my fists and the palms are white with dry flakes.

My scallop started getting very dry and itchy today too.

No new moisturiser, soap, conditioner etc... is there anything I can use? Do I need to drink more water?

I am trying the Aveeno hand cream for very dry skin but it’s not much better (but only using of for a couple of day’s now). I keep my gloves on when I’m outside and don’t wash dishes in the sink.

eucerin hand cream is amazing. my job means i have to wash my hands many, many times a day and it's the only non greasy cream that I've found to work.

I'm a skin picker around my cuticles and my skin gets dry and scabby then I go and pick it again - I've been putting sudacreme on when they bleed, so now I know why tiny fingers and thumbs are so dry.

I wonder if some chemicals in hand creams are actually drying so you need to keep applying more??

Try this one www.purenuffstuff.co.uk/products/Unscented-hand-cream-UK?cat=62 it's got no nasty stuff in it

Predictive text - my fingers

Lordfrontpaw · 08/03/2020 14:24

Mine are still dry and a bit right looking but definitely better this weekend so I’m sure it’s to do with the soap at work.

As previously mentioned please try O'Keefe's Working Hands in a green tub - you can get it at most supermarkets and some builders merchants also Ebay. It is the only cream that works on my hands, especially the tiny cuts near the top of my thumbs and cuticle areas. Worth every penny!

Two tips that will help:

  • slather hands in hand cream/thick body lotion, put rubber gloves over the top and do the washing up; the hot water helps skin absorb the cream
  • slather in cream again and put cotton socks on your feet before bed (obviously do this last thing; you might pull the socks off in the night but it will still help)

I'm another one who would recommend O'Keefe's! It's truly brilliant!

Lordfrontpaw · 08/03/2020 16:33

I’ve ordered a tub of O’Keefe’s and it’s coming tomorrow! I may even use it on my feet (also very sandpapery)!

Thanks for all the suggestions, gang. I will be slipping smoothely from now on!

My hands were the same, bleeding and cracked. The only cream that really improved my hands quickly was Avene hand cream, really was like a miracle. Boots now stick it

Lordfrontpaw · 20/03/2020 07:32

Update - my hands are silky smooth with o’keefes! I’ve even started using it on my throat (Skype meetings has shown up my scraggy neck!).

(Cheaper in Boots than Amazon)

Thank you!!

Brilliant, isn't it? Mine improved after one use!

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 20/03/2020 10:14

Well I came on to say O'Keefes working hands, but looks like you've already discovered this miracle! Luckily still available on Amazon! X

Can I add in one more idea? If you've got any serums, or moisturising liquids that you're using on your face, put a bit on your hands before the hand cream.

I did it the other day with a sample clinique something... moisture spray? And even before I put the cream on I could feel a difference. So while the handwashing thing is full force, I'm trying to remember to add an extra layer before the body shop hemp cream. Or aveeno. Good luck!
Oh, and ps, my sons hands were bleeding after I bought a moisturising anti bac soap liquid last year. Never again!

we ought to have this as a 'approved' item. I have tried so many other things and this is the best.
