What makes a woman glamorous?

Just that really!!
Inspired after a colleague saw me stuffing my mouth with biscuits and remarked ‘what are you eating?! You always look so glamorous and not the type to walk around with a mouthful!’

Made me think Hmm am I glamorous?
Always have a full face of makeup on (primer, concealer, foundation, bronzer, blusher, mascara, lipliner and lip balm), hair clean and tied in a high ponytail. Have to wear a uniform to work but opt for the dress with a waist belt option.

So what to you sets a woman aside as glamorous?
I’m secretly complimented as I have a crush on said colleague Blush but also wondering if it means he just sees me as a Joan Collins impractical Dynasty type so not such a compliment Grin

I think it has slightly negative connotations too (I'm not saying your colleague meant it negatively though! - to me it's makeup, bright lipstick, red nails, sheer tights and a fitted knee length dress/high heels

I think of Glam as a bit Jane MacDonald I suppose. Not especially trendy but quite high maintenance

Stylish is different in my head.

I always think of glamorous as slightly over done. Not ugly or uncouth or anything like that but not suitable for everyday life (as opposed to filming or some kind of event where pictures will be taken). It’s not so much about specific items of clothing like high heels or revealing tops and more about how much effort you’ve put in. So if it example you’ve blowdried your hair, put on a heavy coat of make up (as opposed to a bit of foundation and a lick of mascara), taken time to curate a fussy outfit (as opposed to merely looking smart/coordinated), painted your nails, put on fake tan and so on.

Sagradafamiliar · 03/03/2020 16:20

I got called glamorous when I'd just given birth to DS2 😂 (and I wasn't best pleased to have my looks commented on)

It's make up, clean shiny hair, and good posture (in usual non-child bearing circumstances).

Sarcelle · 03/03/2020 16:35

Gemma Arterton is a modern example of glamour.

Joan Collins is but in that OTT bordering on drag queen way. Liz Taylor had a blowsy sort of glamour. Honor Blackman (is she still alive? Saw her in the street when she was in her 70s, very glamorous indeed.)

Vorderman is not glamorous at all.

drina27 · 03/03/2020 16:58

Joan Collins wears wigs. How glamorous.

drina27 · 03/03/2020 17:00

Stylish is seemingly effortless whereas glamorous is too much.

hellcarryingahandbag · 03/03/2020 17:03

Compulsory: Oozes cleanliness and elegance, nice clothes, makeup (even quite natural, as long as you are wearing it) nice perfume, nice nails

Optional but really helps: A nice handbag (doesn't have to be expensive, just nice), voluminous hair, heels, a pretty scarf (either around the neck or tied over the hair)

The absolute antonyms to glamour: Marching when walking, a leather handbag (tan or otherwise), hoodies, jogging bottoms, old clothes, greasy hair, clear lip gloss, short nails or chipped nail polish, shapeless clothing

drina27 · 03/03/2020 17:16

Unstylish:

False nails or extensions.
Fake tan.
Designer bags covered in blingy buckles or letters
Tight cocoon dresses.
Bare legs in winter or cold weather

etc

Really confused Confused about why a leather handbag, especially a tan one is anti-glamour

lindyloo57 · 03/03/2020 17:31

My granddaughter who is 15 often tell me I look glamorous, bless her, on Sunday she said, nanny you look like cher, in the ABBA film, so glamorous, I thought how kind, although cher is around 10 or 15 years older than me. She doesn't look her age, so I will take that as a compliment.

hellcarryingahandbag · 03/03/2020 17:34

@LaurieFairyCake, it's obnoxiously frumpy.

Sagradafamiliar · 03/03/2020 17:38

Obnoxious and frumpy is a bit paradoxical! I've never thought of leather bags as a no-no other than from a vegan point of view. What's the alternative?

Pipandmum · 03/03/2020 17:39

Glamorous to me means well groomed and with a certain stylish flair. Grace Kelly, David Niven and a lot of stars from the 40s and 50s were the epitome of glamorous. Always made up, always dressed impeccably, good manners (though were often quite badly behaved)!
I'd say today Michele Obama and Christine Lagarde are glamorous.

RuffleCrow · 03/03/2020 17:41

Haha i don't think my name and 'glamourous' have ever been in the same sentence .

mindproject · 03/03/2020 17:47

Glamorous is a bit old-fashioned, it means you wear too much makeup and try to hard. I'd be insulted.

hellcarryingahandbag · 03/03/2020 17:51

I mean like tan soft leather bags. They're just mumsy and frumpy

lindyloo57 · 03/03/2020 17:58

Mindproject, I had on a long black wrap coat, and scarf, blue Jean's and black suede ancle boots, and yes some makeup, I don't think I tried to hard. I wear makeup every day, ever if I don't leave the house, you never know who might pop round.

puds11 Audrey Hepburn wore LOADS of makeup. And her eyebrows would put today's instagram influencers to shame. SO huge, unnatural and drawn in!

you know this is not true. This is a blatant example of a MN post out to make someone feel bad.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 03/03/2020 18:39

Agree damnthatanxiety just trying to make the OP feel bad about themselves. Drina why the nasty dig at Joan Collins for wearing a wig? She has always been very open about her poor quality hair and that’s why she wears them, do you have a problem with women wearing wigs or just Joan Collins?

BoucleEponine · 03/03/2020 18:43

Glamorous is such a subjective word. You could say footballers' wives like Victoria Beckham when she was blonde and orange are glamorous. Or you could say Monaco's Charlotte Casiraghi epitomises glamour. I'm sure OP is more Charlotte than Posh Spice.
