Natural Deodorant - The 5 year journey continues

Hi All,

I've been trying to use natural deodorants for about 5 years. I've gone from making my own mixture to using the likes of US companies Native and Schmidts - the latter two were both good deodorants but I had an issue with the amount of plastic packaging + the shipping from the US seemed a bit excessive.

So I've redefined my mission. I now want a Natural Deodorant made in the UK that works SUPER well AND comes in sustainable packaging.

I'm currently trialling 3 different companies:

Wild - Launching in April so haven't actually tried but their sustainable packaging looks beautiful and I've heard great things about the deo.
Ben & Anna - great cardboard packaging and smells good too, hasn't been 100% effective but only been trying for a week so will give it more time.
Salt of the Earth - seems to work well, smells are hit and miss and not sustainable yet.

I've also tried Nuud which isn't a UK brand but is EU, smells good and is truly sustainable which is fantastic. Unfortunately rubbing on the armpit with my hands was a bit gross so I've decided to stop that.

Interested to hear other suggestions from everyone and if anyone has some winners? I'll also post my results from the above UK brands + any new ones I come across.

I really believe natural deodorant is the way forward, the idea of putting nasty chemicals under my arms and blocking my pores kind of revolts me now so I'm determined to find the best option out there.

Thanks everyone.

Hi OP, thanks for posting this.

I've been using a salt of the earth crystal deodorant for a few weeks now, and was looking at trying some other brands, so this is helpful.

Just one thing, though: I'm pretty sure my salt of the earth deodorant says "made in china" on it...

I was just going to stock up on my solid bar shampoo and found the solid bar company has started selling them. Not tried them myself yet, but they are UK made and plastic free packaging.

DinosApple · 24/02/2020 20:50

(the shampoo is great btw.)

I've been using Lush Aromaco for years. Very happy with it. Very minimal packaging.

similarminimer · 25/02/2020 07:19

Aurelia skincare deodorant works brilliantly, smells fresh and delicious, is U.K. made and in a glass jar.

bagelbaby · 25/02/2020 08:03

The Weleda ones work for me. Glass packaging

MistressWeatherwax1 · 25/02/2020 09:39

I've been using Lush Aromaco for 18 years now and I love it. It even stood up well to 40 degree heat and high humidity in Oz last year.

I’m using Earth Conscious at the moment - cardboard packaging, made in the Isle of Wight, smells nice and seems to work pretty well. I’d also like to try one by the Natural Deodorant Co (which is a balm not a stick but that doesn’t bother me) as I’ve heard good things about them.

Housewife2010 · 25/02/2020 10:24

My husband and I really like Fit Pit. Its in a jar and is a nicer consistency than Schmidt's.

snappycamper · 25/02/2020 10:54

I've ditched salt of the earth after the packaging broke on my first two crystal deodorants. I'm now using a faith in nature crystal stick, which is faring much better.

Gadgnkk · 25/02/2020 10:56

I wear none
I think more people should
I’d far rather smell a bit of natural armpit odour than some chemical

chazbl · 25/02/2020 11:21

I've just looked at mine and you're right, so it is. Is it the actual deodorant that's made their or just the packaging?

Wash your armpits with soap*, dry them and then rub on a slice of lemon. Sounds like it wouldn't work, but it does.

*Proper soap, not Dove

chazbl · 25/02/2020 11:29

I used to do this actually. I get eczema and found that straight up lemons would give me a rash (probably because of the acidity) but I have a friend who does it and swears by it.

On an off-topic note - what soap do you recommend?

I have tried quite a few (Earth Conscious tins, Lush, Jason ones etc). I find The Natural Deodorant company the best, they're a bit expensive but smell really lovely - I tend to get them from All Beauty who sometimes do 3 for 2 offers:
www.allbeauty.com/gb/en/brands/the-natural-deodorant-co

I tend to get the "active" ones.

Canshopwillshop · 25/02/2020 16:59

I use the Tropic one called ‘Feel Fresh’ - it’s lovely.

frostedviolets · 25/02/2020 17:04

Stay well away from Lush deodorant!
They contain bicarbonate of soda.

In fact, stay away from any deodorant containing bicarbonate it soda.

Lush’s cream version, think it’s actually been discontinued now, aromacreme? gave me a severe chemical burn.

frostedviolets · 25/02/2020 17:07

I’d also like to try one by the Natural Deodorant Co (which is a balm not a stick but that doesn’t bother me)

Have used this company.
The Manuka one smells quite unpleasant in my opinion.

DH really liked the orange one but a lot of them, including the one DH liked have bicarbonate in which although had no effect on DH lots of people, like myself, react very very badly to even small amounts of it on the skin.

Yes I agree 100% Tropic deodorant is the only one use and it smells gorgeous,
Good for the environment with no hidden nasties.
It's £10 but last ages!!!

chazbl · 25/02/2020 18:07

Thanks for coming back - I did actually try wearing none but unfortunately I smell too bad if I do that (and have a family who aren't afraid to point it out!)

Canshopwillshop · 25/02/2020 18:59

@Riv12345 - I tried loads of other natural ones whilst pregnant then went back to Dove. Discovered Tropic a few months back and am delighted with it. Hasn’t been tested in hot weather yet though ...

PiedImperial · 25/02/2020 19:16

Loads of suggestions for me to try! - thank you OP and all the other PPs.

A quick question for you all: does the tropic deodorant leave white marks on your clothes at all? And any of the others mentioned - do they leave white marks?

Riv12345 · 25/02/2020 20:00

I work in a busy hot hospital tropic deodorant works fine.
I must admit when I first tried it I only use to wear it on my days off as I was scared that it wouldn't work Confused,

But I needn't had worried, it works brilliantly, I just use to worry about the chemicals in other deodorants.

But I'm really pleased with it xx

Canshopwillshop · 25/02/2020 20:13

@piedimperial - no white marks with the Tropic and I wear a lot of black!

PiedImperial · 25/02/2020 20:21

Thanks canshop - I might give the tropic one a try.
