Spotty chin making me miserable

MrsTumbletap · 22/02/2020 17:13

I am 37 and used to have great skin.

Over the last 2 years I have had a surge of spots on my chin and around my mouth and I don't know why, some have said its hormones nurse at my GP said changing contraception may help and it's made no difference.

What can I do? Cleansing and toning and clay masks make no difference. Cleaning and covering in sudocrem makes no difference. Blasting it with my laser hair remover makes no difference.

If you find the answer, please let me know. I had lovely skin but it is now a wreck and I don't know why. I'm leaning towards blaming the implant, but I've had that taken out and I don't seem to have rebalanced at all.

MrsTumbletap · 22/02/2020 17:30

I wanted to blame the implant too, and I thought it gave me chin hairs so removing the chin hairs was what gave me spots, did you have the same?

La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo + is the only thing that keeps my chin/hormonal spots completely at bay.

I never had spots as a teenager but started in my mid thirties with hormonal acne. The above product was recommended here and I've been using it for about five years now. The only time I get breakouts is when I'm too tight to buy more LRP (it's about £16 a tube but lasts 10-12 weeks).

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/02/2020 17:38

If you've got an understanding dr ask to be out on Yasmin pill.It can be prescribed for acne aswell as a contraceptive so its two birds with one stone.Ive been on it 6 yrs and never had a spot.

MrsTumbletap · 22/02/2020 17:55

@PrincessHoneysuckle I am on Yasmin, that's what the nurse recommended for me.

Hasn't made the slightest bit of difference. Currently have about 15 spots right now. Sad

@Danglingmod just googled it, do you use the three step thing or just the one tube?

I also use the La Roche Posay Effaclar range, also having read about it on here. I started off with the face wash, the toner and the moisturiser, but now, despite still having some of the toner and moisturiser left I actually only use the face wash. I use it morning and night and agree with the pp that it's the only thing that works. I'm not very brand loyal with anything but I won't stop buying this because when I have stopped using it in the past the hormonal spots came back. It really is a miracle product.

WingBingo · 22/02/2020 18:00

Spironalactane (sp?)

Acne treatment for hormonal spots around the chin.

I asked for a referral to a dermatologist and they prescribed it for me. I am 8 weeks in and I can see an improved.

Danglingmod · 22/02/2020 18:18

I just use the Effaclar Duo + (it's an imperfection corrector/unclogger)...

You can use a separate moisturiser on top but I don't bother - or daren't risk reclogging the skin - just use a sunscreen (LRP or Ultrasun) for 9-10 mths of the year, too.

I had awful chin spots and have started using La Roche Posay retinol serum which I’ve found great. I used the effaclar in the past and it was good but I found it stopped working sadly.

Abkbjbjb · 22/02/2020 18:28

Following as I am the same aged 41 😒

DeeKK · 22/02/2020 18:34

What kind of spots are they? Could it possibly be perioral dermatitis?

Ask doctor for clindamycin topical lotion - brand name is dalacin t. Brilliant stuff for clearing skin

Sunshinelollipops1 · 22/02/2020 18:40

I went to a dermatologist after developing cystic acne round my neck and jawline. Hormone related. I was prescribed Spironolactane. Its an anti-diuretic, but can be used off-licence to treat hormonal acne. I also have a topical cream. My skin looks fantastic. Because its off-licence you have to see a dermatologist, but my GP will now prescribed as on consultant recommendation.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 22/02/2020 18:46

I can't have some of the GP prescribed stuff because Crohn's so my drugs contraindicate - unfair! I have also got witchy chin hairs and I swear some zits are blocked hair follicles. I will get some LRP. Is it good for dry skin? Dry to the point of splitting?

MrsTumbletap · 22/02/2020 18:47

Effaclar Duo +

La Roche Posay retinol se
clindamycin topical lotion - bra
Spironolactane

So these are the 4 recommendations so far. I wish I knew which one would work.

Definitely not the dermatitis one as my son has had that and we have a cream that clears it up easily, I have even tried using that on my face in desperation!

These are spots, some big ones under the skin that hurt, some with white heads, all around the chin and jawline.

If it is bothering you that much it might be best to consider going to see a private dermatologist and get a professional diagnosis of the cause. And longer term may not be much more expensive that trying a battery of different facial products that don’t work.

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/02/2020 18:53

Drs appointment I think. No point spending money on cosmetic cures for a medical problem.

Sunshinelollipops1 · 22/02/2020 18:56

Agree with @UpperLowercaseSymbolNumber, I spent a fortune on OTC remedies and then prescriptions from GP.

I had a GP referral, but my dermatologist you can self-refer. Appointment was £250 and was brilliant. He went through everything (including skin care (he recommended Effaclar Duo) and make up and also medication options). Looking back probably spent £250 on various creams and potions and facials - should have just gone to the dermatologist.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/02/2020 19:07

I'm really surprised at that! Sorry have no other suggestions I hope you sort it soon

mumofone2818 · 22/02/2020 20:21

I have this same problem & my acne got worse because of being on contraception. I started taking primerole oil supplements to balance my hormobes & my face hasn't looked like this since i was about 15 & i'm now 26!
