Help!

I have a date on Saturday and I don't know where to begin.

What's good for a slightly over weight mum tum just hit 40 on her first date in over a decade?

I was thinking wrap dress. But nothing too dressy. And god shoes. I can't wear heels for toffee. Heeeeelp me.

Oh and if anyone knows anywhere good to go in central London that would also help

Basically I'm out of my depth.

Thank you

Can't he decide on a venue? saves you the worry. How about black jeans, a nice top a bit of jewellery and boots? can't go wrong.
good luck! Flowers

MissMogwai · 17/02/2020 19:27

I'd do as pp advised - jeans and a nice top, heeled boots, accessories and my biker jacket.

Predictable but I'd feel comfy and myself IYSWIM

Good luck!!

graingers · 17/02/2020 19:30

Black skinnies, nice top, and sensible heels (Next do good comfortable ones which won't kill your feet and are flattering). If you feel a bit over your ideal weight choose darker colours for your jeans and too then jazz it up with funky but not OTT accessories, maybe a bright shoe.

There is a really good crazy golf bar near Oxford St which is fab for a date.

Have fun Thanks

NoNoAndNoAgain · 17/02/2020 19:31

Thank you!

Yes I've kind of lobbed venue into his court. I've not been out in London for ages since the dc so I have no bloody clue.

And you're both right. I wouldn't feel comfy in a dress as I hardly ever wear them. Not pockety enough for me. Jeans and nice top sounds perfect.

Might have to spend more time looking for boots as I really do live in scruffy trainers!

I'm pretty sure I used to take care of myself. I don't know what happened!

Most people in London wear trainers so I wouldn’t worry about boots if they’re not comfortable for you. Get a fab new pair of trainers.

Thinkle · 17/02/2020 19:50

Live in London and wholeheartedly agree with @slipperyeel. I’d probably wear a midi dress like that Zara one but not that Zara one.
Go to the new bars and restaurants up behind Kings X if you want to be a bit different (to soho) but not out of your comfort zone.
Good luck x

Thinkle · 17/02/2020 19:51

Sorry you don’t want a dress.
Still wear nice trainers!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 17/02/2020 20:02

I would also do midi dress and trainers - get a dress with pockets! Warehouse and Oliver Bonas have some great dresses just now, and H&M have a fab one that is v v similar to That Zara Dress shape-wise, and comes in loads of different prints. (Only £25, although sadly no pockets.)

RaininSummer · 17/02/2020 20:06

Boots with wedges are easier to walk in than heels and way comfier. Would work with dress or jeans.

theuntameableshrew · 17/02/2020 20:11

I’d get some new smart trainers and be comfortable Smile. If you feel comfortable in your clothes you’ll be more relaxed. Hope it goes well.

NoNoAndNoAgain · 17/02/2020 20:32

Thank you! Thanks

You've all given me plenty of ideas to google and thank god ive still got a bit of time to try stuff on.

I used to wear a lot of dresses but since dc the pocket thing just stresses me out! But maybe as they won't be around I won't have to have bottles/wipes/15 types of snacks on me so I won't need the pockets.

I have some new fairly smart grey Adidas trainers which I bought hoping to make the school run smarter. Then refused to wear as I thought they'd get soaked in the rain. I might try them out with some outfits and see if they work. Otherwise thank you yes wedgey boots might be a good idea. (He's 6'2 and I'm 5'4 so maybe I need all the help I can get...)

You're all amazing. Thank you.

this is the H&M dress. I have the leopard version and it is really flattering - I’m 5ft 6, UK 10. I wore it with a fine-knit polo neck underneath and opaque tights/trainers but it will be great with bare legs when it gets warmer.

(My DP is 6ft 5. He just stoops when he has to!)

Happyandglorious · 17/02/2020 21:03

Maybe get your hair blow dried or spray tan so you feel a bit more groomed and as a treat to yourself.
Hope it's a fun night

NoNoAndNoAgain · 21/02/2020 18:01

Thank you everyone.

Can I just get some advice on bloody Peter Pan collars?!

I bought a different top but then had a crisis of confidence. And found this old one. But I've never worn it before. How the hell do you wear tops with Peter Pan collars under jackets. Is this okay?!

It's kind of see through but I have a vest underneath. Hopefully the right balance of sexy but hands off first date material!

Ds is not helpful advisor.

I think that looks lovely! Is it with jeans?

NoNoAndNoAgain · 21/02/2020 18:44

Thank you!

Yes with skinny jeans (which was the popular consensus. And I totally agree. My thighs look horrendous but they do in anything.

Toying with going to the gym first thing as a desperate measure..!

OP posts:
RedIsWhereItsAt · 21/02/2020 19:48

Why don't you post a headless full length photo?

Time after time men seem to prefer curvy.

NoNoAndNoAgain · 21/02/2020 20:40

Thanks @RedIsWhereItsAt

I don't have a full length mirror. Ex DH was really funny about mirrors and wouldnt get any so I'm stuck standing on the kids bathroom stools to see myself in the mirror. Confused

He's just texted saying he's a member of a private members bar in soho so why don't we go there. And now I'm freaking out as I have been harassed mum on school run for the last five years. I'm not soho glam!!

This is the other top I bought. (It doesn't look quite like this on me)

Well I love both tops, and I LOVE the tweed fabric of your coat/jacket.

NoNoAndNoAgain · 21/02/2020 20:56

Thank you! You have no idea how helpful you are. I'm feeling so out of my depth Thanks

The jacket is white stuff. I got it from John Lewis the other day. I did a lot of panic buying.....!

OP posts:
Growingboys · 21/02/2020 21:17

If you wear the white collar top, I'd go for heels over trainers as otherwise I would say your outfit - while very nice - is a bit sexless for a first date. Do you have another shirt eg white silk to wear under the jacket? I think that would look great - it's an excellent jacket.

I think the second top is better for a second date if you like him! But maybe a little bit bit much for a first date.

Good luck OP, it must be terrifying putting yourself out there again. You might have the most amazing time - the members club sounds FUN!

Thinkle · 21/02/2020 21:22

Is the bar Milk and Honey? If it is don’t worry, it’s very chilled and so so nice.
Have a wonderful time x

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2020 21:26

Sorry but I'm not a fan of the Peter Pan top, not because of the collar but because of the colour/print. It looks too 'demure primary school teacher' for a date, I think.

The jacket is nice, but won't you need a coat? If the jacket can count as a coat, then maybe a thin jumper under it?

TheLightGetsIn · 21/02/2020 22:17

Do you have a pic of the second top on you? I like the Peter Pan collar but agree the print isn't the best. If the other top is too booby for a first date (hard to tell without seeing it on), could you substitute a less plunging vest underneath it? Otherwise I really like the look of that one.

Jacket is nice!

NoNoAndNoAgain · 22/02/2020 11:08

Thank you. Yeah in the cold light of day I'm thinking of the other top too! It's a bit more forgiving and less clingy too...!

Sorry for shit photo. Just had shower from gym. I'm about as ready as I'm ever going to be!
