I am on the hunt for a new foundation as having just turned 39 I'd like to look a little more polished and fresh!
I just can't seem to find one that my dry skin doesn't break through within a few hours and is gone by the end of the day.

Ones I've tried so far: new benefit one, Chanel healthy glow, Estée Lauder double wear and boots hydraluminous.

Or is the problem not the foundation but that I need some decent skincare?
I use superdrug vitamin e hot cloth cleanser and no7 serums and moisturizer.

CYO lifeproof is amazing. Also a new discovery to me - Superdrug simply pure hydrating serum. It's £3 and adds loads of moisture for me. I use it before moisturiser in the morning

jcurve · 16/02/2020 12:58

Try IT Cosmetics CC cream. This is the best for my dry skin, I switched from EL double wear nude water fresh to this. Boots will give you a generous sample if you ask.

QuestionableMouse · 16/02/2020 12:59

Are you using a primer? There's loads of different types and they really do help your makeup last.

ArtemisOfOrtygia · 16/02/2020 13:07

I have dry skin as well and found it hard to find a foundation that works for me, too. On top of my dry skin, I'm also light skinned with a neutral undertone. Not many brands cater to light skinned people that aren't pink toned.

My tip for you is to get your skincare right, because that's going to really help in making your foundation look good. I also recommend using either a luminous sunscreen or a luminous primer under your foundation. And if you must powder, be very conservative and use a more luminous powder.

I don't think the products you have tried so far are good for dry skin. I have tried some of them myself and hated them. I would recommend these products instead:

  • Nars Sheer Glow foundation (their shade range is amazing, too)
  • Becca Backlighting primer
  • La Roche Posay Anthelios 50+ SPF
  • Hourglass Ambient Lighting powder
EatenByDinosaurs · 16/02/2020 14:04

I have dry skin and like a pp swear by Becca Backlight primer, it gives a film star glow.

That said I've been trialling Nivea Post Shave Balm (the one for men, the sensitive, one not the cooling one) and that under the Becca Backlight is truly amazing.
Even without the Becca its fantastic, and means I can use any foundation over the top without flaking, drying out etc.

I use Physician's Formula CC cream, its a dupe for IT Cosmetics CC, but without the silicones the IT has and which my skin struggles to tolerate.

Girlintheframe · 16/02/2020 14:40

According to Caroline Hirons it's because your dry skin is sucking the moisture from your foundation. Sounds like you need to adjust your skincare

Beautifullymixed · 16/02/2020 15:31

Hada labo premium serum layered on top of Pyunkang Yul essence. Two layers each.

Drop of squalene, rosehip or rice bran oil pressed into the skin.
CeraVe moisturising cream (a generous amount).
Elf poreless putty primer for the final layer.
My skin is hydrated, smooth and not a dry patch in sight.

My ultimate foundation is the new Maybelline dream radiant liquid foundation.
It's amazing!
Not too dewy, but hydrating enough that my skin does not tighten over the day, crack or flake.
It blends like a dream, especially as I layer it over my rosacea red cheeks and acne scars. Such a natural, skin like finish.

It's light on the skin but covers so well and beats my other favourites Loreal pro glo, CYO lifeproof, Maybelline fit me dewy and smooth and No 7 hydraluminous hands down. No contest.

It's such a flattering foundation for my 47 year old skin.

Beautifullymixed · 16/02/2020 15:36

I also use oil to cleanse my skin and CeraVe hydrating wash as my second cleanse.
My skin is clean with no clogged pores without being stripped.
When my skin is damp, I use my towel to gently rub over dry areas, especially between the eyebrows and around the nose.
This ensures the foundation looks as smooth as can be, and there are no flaky areas or dry patches left.
This has made a massive difference to my finished look - especially with my rosacea - as my nose peels and gets clogged very easily.

I cannot forget the final layer at night though.
Vaseline.
The ultimate smooth, hydrated, fresh skin accessory. Smile

Squeazypeasy · 16/02/2020 15:55

My skin gets really dry if I wash it with water OP. I use a wipe off cleanser and then a gentle non alcohol toner. That has made the difference for me. I then use moisturiser, and a tinted moisturiser/bb cream with double wear over the top in the areas I need extra coverage.

damnthatanxiety · 16/02/2020 16:03

Estée Lauder has a new one. It's 'coming soon' on John Lewis website. It's part of the futurist range but in a tube. Not the one in the bottle. Very good reviews. Medium cover. Glowy but not one that remains tacky and great for dry skin

Kote · 16/02/2020 16:20

Seconding PP's recommendation of CYO Lifeproof foundation. I have reeeally dry skin and this is the only foundation I have found that doesn't make my skin look scaly!

It's half price at the moment in Boots so only around £3 something too.

sickandtiredofsick · 16/02/2020 22:03

The no7 super light one is good. I tried other more expensive ones and they were not anywhere near as moisturising. Bare minerals complexion rescue claimed to be good but dried my skin and sat on my pores and fine lines horribly.
The no7 one is good as you can use rich skincare I’ve found under but it doesn’t add any heaviness. I really liked it, can’t wait to go back to make up when I’m better as I miss it and feel and look crap atm (HG) this foundation plus a little concealer and loose powder, spritz of Avene water makes a lovely base

hannabarbera · 17/02/2020 08:48

No point in finding a foundation until your skincare is sorted. My skin dry and sensitive and it has taken years to find what I like and trust and I’m 45!

I use coconut oil, nivea blue and an eye cream.

Nivea eye makeup remover and micellar water and Superdrug naturally radiant glycolic toner. My skin is fab!

Then my foundation is L’oreal True Match.

dontgobaconmyheart · 17/02/2020 13:16

I think youd be better off investing in skincare to combat the dehydrated skin OP, theres very little you can do to prevent dry skin absorbing moisture from foundation of it needs moisture.

I add a few drops of oil to my morning cleanse if I need a quick fix, and use Eucerin 5% facial cream but I would look at skincare routines, introducing serums or oils and emollients or acid toners which encourage moisture retention.

The CYO lifeproof fou fation is really nice generally though, glad to see it getting some love on here as I've been using it for ages and rate it.

MiddleOfTheRoad · 18/02/2020 22:51

This is me. I'm 46, neglected dry, dull skin with red patches.

I went to an Estee Lauder counter today and the advisor pointed out that unless I sort my skin out, no foundation will sit right.

She used the Advanced Night Repair Intense Reset Concentrate

Then the Revitalizing Supreme + cream

Then the new Futurist Hydra Rescue (mentioned upthread).

I looked in the mirror and by God it was incredible! My skin was glowing. DH couldn't believe it either.

I forked out for the foundation (which feels beautifully light and dewy) £36 and repair serum £59.
Bear in mind, I normally spend a few quid only.

It came with a gift which included the cream and lots of other bits, including a foaming cleanser which I've been advised to use too.

I'm so pleasesd (and no, I don't work for EL).

I genuinely felt lost until today. I've been so down over my skin and makeup and this is a game changer.

You could ask for some samples as it is pricey, but I'm prepared to splash out if this is the result!

MiddleOfTheRoad · 18/02/2020 22:52

Futurist Hydra Rescue Foundation

MiddleOfTheRoad · 18/02/2020 22:53

It lasted all day and evening too!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/02/2020 22:57

Use CeraVe hydrating wash and CeraVe cream in the tube for a month and you'll be able to wear any foundation you like. It's miraculous stuff!

Beautifullymixed · 19/02/2020 05:05

Agree with the CeraVe wash and cream - amazing products to use and keeps my skin (along with serums and oil) hydrated all day.

Middleof the road - you spent how much?? Shock
My recent purchases of Elf putty primer (£8) and Maybelline dream radiant liquid foundation (2 for £12 at Superdrug) have caused me stare in the mirror at my fresh, hydrated skin.
This is my dehydrated, rosacea red and rough skin - which is glowing and hydrated.
It lasts all day (I do powder), and looks amazing throughout the day.
Absolute bargain buys.

olivehater · 19/02/2020 06:47

I use a moisturiser followed by trinny London bff ( a sort of tinted moisturiser.
Then I mix some more bff with my foundation and use just in the places I need coverage the most not all over my face. I use nars sheer glow. It’s very light. Also here have a Mac one. I think if you mix with a moisturiser/tinted moisturiser it makes it so much less drying.

Carnabie · 19/02/2020 07:52

Thanks eatenbydinosaurs, I can’t use silicones either and it’s really hard to find a foundation or primer without so I appreciate the recommendations

MiddleOfTheRoad · 19/02/2020 07:56

Beautifully I know...it's normally Superdrug for me, so still a bit Shock

I'm noting your tips though and will try those next.

MiddleOfTheRoad · 19/02/2020 07:59

Which powder do you use?
I don't know whether to use powder though as it might take the glow away.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/02/2020 08:22

Lily Lolo powder is fab stuff, just a tiny amount is needed.

Liveandforget · 19/02/2020 08:23

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor Could you link the cerave cream you mentioned? Thanks in advance.
