Please help me find a foundation to suit my dry skin!

I am on the hunt for a new foundation as having just turned 39 I'd like to look a little more polished and fresh!
I just can't seem to find one that my dry skin doesn't break through within a few hours and is gone by the end of the day.

Ones I've tried so far: new benefit one, Chanel healthy glow, Estée Lauder double wear and boots hydraluminous.

Or is the problem not the foundation but that I need some decent skincare?
I use superdrug vitamin e hot cloth cleanser and no7 serums and moisturizer.

You're welcome @Carnabie its a pain isn't it, silicones are in so many products.
If it helps I've also found Two Faced Hangover Primer to be very good, hydrating, and silicone free, and Maybelline Dewy and Smooth (think that's what it's called I'm in the US and it has a slightly different name here I think) foundation too.

L'oreal true match

Ah crap no, sorry its late here, the Maybelline one broke me out badly and does have silicones, sorry just checked my spreadsheet.

Middle I am a powder addict and always set my foundation. My t zone is oily enough to need it, but I'm careful when in the middle of a rosacea flare up or my skin is ultra dehydrated - or I find the moisture being sucked out of my skin!

I prefer silica powders, as I'm a medium brown colour and they just look invisible.
They are also ultra light and feathery on the skin.
Favourites are Innisfree no sebum powder, Etude house zero sebum, Elf HD powder and if I want my makeup to last - and I'm not too dry - Too faced peach setting powder.

I always hydrate the skin very well before and use my damp sponge or a dry puff to really press the powder into the skin. I press it in until it's practically invisible.
I then often put a light layer of Maybelline fit me loose powder (tinted) over if I need extra coverage.
This step is optional as it gives a fuller coverage look and can be drying, so it's not for everyday.
I sweep the excess powder off gently in downwards strokes, as too much buffing irritates my skin or causes flakes.
I use the Spectrum AO5 angled brush and it really has the lightest touch.

Finally, I use a hydrating spray which I discovered at Christmas.
This dewy mist Elf spray really adds a moisture punch to the skin, takes away any powdery look and leaves you glowing. It really is good stuff.

Hydrating serum
Facial oil
Moisturiser
Primer

If you don’t have lots to cover Nars tinted moisturiser is lovely and has more coverage than most Tm

Maybelline have recently released a glowing one

Is it dry because of the winter? Do you have that problem in summer?

MiddleOfTheRoad · 20/02/2020 08:46

Thanks Beautifully that's really helpful.

Thanks to the pp also for the link to the Cervave cream.
That's a steal!

OP, I'm now on day 3 of my new regime with Estee Lauder and my skin is looking much better in terms of moisture and redness - I've even had some compliments.
However, I have a spot! Not had a spot in years as my skin is so dry.

I'm definitely going to try some of the less pricey products on here though as I'm still Shock at how much I spent. I was so desperate that day and so happy that any foundation was even on my skin (usually it lumps together in patches, goes flaky/cakey)..

Please keep the tips coming as I'm bookmarking this thread.

@Beautifullymixed I'm fascinated by your skincare and makeup routine. Sounds awesome. Thanks for all the helpful tips and product recommendation, will come in handy when I go shopping.

My solution is to focus on skincare (more so at night) and then go light on the foundation.

I don't wear much make-up at the moment as I've been working from home - but whenever I do, I remove it in the evenings by using some sort of cream or balm cleanser that you take off with a muslin cloth (gently, in circles). Then I might use some kind of micellar water followed by a good moisturiser or facial oil before bed. It's pricey so I don't have any right now but I do like the Genefique serum as well.

Another thing I personally like is to occasionally use something from the Nip+Fab glycolic acid range - but I don't think this works for everyone so be careful if you have sensitive skin!

Anyway, for me the most important thing is to prevent any dry patches of skin that the foundation can cling to. I've found scrubs to be far too harsh and sometimes they've even made the problem worse! That's why I prefer to use the muslin cloth cleansing method or glycolic acid to exfoliate instead. Then choose a moisturiser with SPF that sits well under your foundation (I've found some moisturisers don't mix well with my make-up for some reason!) and I've also found it helps to wait a few minutes between putting on eye cream/moisturiser and then primer/foundation.

For the actual foundation, I apply a Lancome primer and foundation at the same time. A sales person explained that by doing that I could make the coverage lighter, as the foundation I use is normally a fuller coverage one. Then I'll use a tiny bit almost like concealer anywhere it's needed.

After I've used any powder products (I use this in 06 which is darker than my skin tone as a bronzer and/or I might use some kind of blusher), I like to use a face mist that I picked up from the Body Shop (the blue coconut one). This sets the powder products and gives my skin some extra moisture at the same time. I picked it up a while back because I was working in an office and the air conditioning wasn't helping! So I would typically use it once in the morning and then keep it in my bag so that I could refresh my skin around lunchtime or in the afternoon (in the bathroom though! no random spraying near people's computers! Grin)

zurigirl · 20/02/2020 23:34

Oops, sorry! That was longer than I realised. Blush

I just wanted to add though... try and identify any triggers that could be making it worse, or whether your skin might even be dehydrated rather than dry necessarily.

For example, is it down to working in an office? Are you using products that are unnecessarily harsh on your skin? Are you drinking enough water throughout the day?

I've also found my skin is affected by the seasons and time of the month.

Beautifullymixed · 21/02/2020 00:43

Liveandforget thank you!
I have worked out what my skin needs at long last, and after years of thinking I needed harsh acne treatments etc, my skin just loves hydration.
Oils, serums, essences all layered on. Layers of serums twice a day.
Actives are TO niacinamide, TO 2% retinoid and Nip and fab glycolic pads.
Oil cleansing and CeraVe facial wash and moisturising cream.
Also, La Roche posay cicaplast and vaseline at night. Good old vaseline.

My pores are unplugged, my rosacea is soothed, my redness has faded, and my acne has subsided.
I do still have rosacea flare ups, especially in the cold and I just halt the actives and increase the moisture.
I hear my skin sigh when the serum layers pile on, especially at the end of a cold day or with the dry central heating. Smile

tillytubby · 21/02/2020 17:39

Thanks all. I've really taken a good look at my skincare and have been watching pampered wolf YouTube videos non stop for tips as she is about my age.

I've ordered some cyo foundation to try as it's only 3.75 there's no point in getting a sample!

I'm also going to try oil cleansing with simple oil cleanser and cut out the hot cloth cleanser from my routine. Going to try cerave as well.

I've also learnt a lot about the way I've been applying it which is probably contributing to the problem.
