What do you wear to fly?

And you don’t look like a total scruff. Grin
I’ve got a long haul flight coming up and I want to be comfy but not look as scruffy as I have in the past (joggers, hoodie).

Well I wear exercise clothes (leggings and a T-shirt) but that might count as scruffy.

HermioneWeasley · 15/02/2020 17:36

Erm, I just look a total scruf. They still let you on the plane.

Ihatesundays · 15/02/2020 17:38

The main reason is I always get stopped for extra checks. Every single time. Assuming it’s my baggy scruffs causing it.

I wear those big oversized Cos dresses and a big scarf, looks smart but comfy (no waistband) and cashmere socks onboard.

Annasgirl · 15/02/2020 17:47

Wear posh workout clothes - Lululemon leggings (or similar), a nice short sleeved top, a nice long sleeved top, a fancy puffa jacket and a comfy trainers. Dark colours. Good to go. If it is good enough for top models, it is good enough for your trip.

CMOTDibbler · 15/02/2020 17:53

It doesn't make any difference for extra checks. I'm a very frequent flyer, and the only thing I care about long haul is comfort. I'm all about fold top maxi skirts or yoga pants (so no waistband to dig in), loose t shirt, soft crop top bra and Physix compression socks, plus a zip front hoody (as otherwise when I get too hot sometimes I have to be a contortionist to take it off. Merino socks and trainers so my feet are propped well off the floor on the trainers, and my feet aren't sweaty before and after the compression socks

HermioneWeasley · 15/02/2020 18:06

No extra checks for scruffy Hermione.

Maybe you look dodgy Grin

Ihatesundays · 15/02/2020 18:08

It must be that!! Blush

Jeans, t-shirt and sweatshirt/jumper for me. I don't care if it doesn't look posh.

If I am going to anywhere that is likely to be hot I will wear my denim shorts, which are mid thigh length with a t-shirt and a jacket (which I can wear or keep in my hand luggage as required.

Footwear is trainers.

StarlightLady · 15/02/2020 18:45

T shirt dress and cardigan. Nothing tight on the waist.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 15/02/2020 19:03

I'm in Mexico at the moment and on the plane I wore sweaty Betty leggings, a long black spaghetti strap vest, and a DKNY Cozy wrap cardigan (can also be used as a scarf, an off the shoulder top, etc). Lightweight Nike trainers and a small crossbody bag for family passports and eye drops, lip balm etc. Also carry my Panama hat to keep it nice Smile

dudsville · 15/02/2020 19:35

Well based on another thread I bought Lucy and Yak dungarees in black cord. They are so ridiculously comfortable that I will wear them on future flights layering a tshirt and cotton jumper underneath. Mmm.

KittenVsBox · 15/02/2020 19:40

Not jeans! You need something soft round your waist.
Jersey trousers, teeshirt, cardi here. Trainers. Hair in low ponytail.

I think getting stopped is partly about attitude and behaviours rather than looks (my resident permit photo was taken as we landed. I'd just done 18 hrs solo with 2 kids, having emptied the house in the UK for rental. I was a wreck, but didnt get stopped or searched).

Mamia15 · 15/02/2020 20:11

I do a lot of long haul flights - what I wear depends on where I'm going and when. Last time was a few weeks ago, wore the following:

Black leggings, soft crop bra, black vest, long black merino jumper, big scarf and trainers. Comfort is key and I look good in black which helps - navy or grey is a good colour if you prefer not to wear black.

GemmeFatale · 16/02/2020 03:23

Searches are often predetermined.

I got searched a lot in my early 20s as I fit the profile of a drugs mule. Young, female, travelling solo, hand luggage only, return trip showing I wasn’t spending long at the destination.

Late 20’s/early 30’s rarely searched as I fit a more tourist/business traveler profile.

Mid 30’s I got searched every second time I flew to the states but never on my way back to the U.K. (guessing that was linked to my unusual visa type).

So yeah. Random searches aren’t always that random.

eurochick · 16/02/2020 04:41

I wear jeans and layers usually. I don't find jeans uncomfortable.

As has been said the searches are probably because you fit a profile or have the same name as someone who has done something dodgy than because of your clothes.

okiedokieme · 16/02/2020 05:04

Something comfortable, I wear jersey dresses, leggings and boots usually, unless it's summer both ends in which case sandals

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 16/02/2020 05:11

I get searched every time because I have pins in both feet after bunions so I always set the machine off! I had quite an intense check in Romania pulling my clothes away from my body and checking in my underwear! Let's see what happens in Sicily next week!

Sarcelle · 16/02/2020 05:24

I once wore tight jeans when I flew back from Turkey. I swelled up during flight, I had to undo jean button but couldn't do it up again when I left. So uncomfortable, since then stretchy stuff rules.

I did fly to NY once and was uber smart to see if I could get an upgrade to Business Class. It worked, we got upgraded!

shawarmasue · 16/02/2020 06:00

Never a onesie/ jumpsuit and always always have tampons and pads .. and an empty water bottle, snacks ..

violetbunny · 16/02/2020 06:00

Lululemon make some great travel clothes - especially trousers. I have some ankle length ones in a charcoal grey, they have a soft elastic waist but actually look nice enough to wear to work and don't crease. I wear them with a loose tank top and a long sleeved lightweight knit, so I can remove a layer if I get hot.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/02/2020 08:14

I agree, I think it’s just you! My DF got stopped every time he flew for years, the only time they let him through was when I said he was with me, they looked me up and down and sent him on his way. I’ve never once been pulled over.

I have however gone through about 6 months where security followed me around in the city where I work. I changed my hair and it stopped. I must have looked like a local lifter.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 16/02/2020 08:22

I normally wear leggings, a loose fitting vest top, and a waterfall cashmere cardigan that's seen better days but still presentable. Fitflops as they're comfy even if my feet swell slightly.
Always wear a big scarf too.

Comfort is my main priority on flights!

Ginfordinner · 16/02/2020 08:27

I wouldn't have thought that dungarees were the most practical item when using the loos in a plane dudsville.
