Trends that are no longer trends - hush ruched skirt, par exemple

A few years ago, these were all the rage, but now it's all about the midi.
I can't do the midi very well.
Is anyone still wearing theirs (or any other tube type mini)?
How are you updating it?
I love mine with slouchy T/jumper but wondering if I should consign to eBay

I wish hush still did that skirt, so comfortable and go with everything.
I’ve got a burgundy and a black one but they’re faded and washed out now

notstockpilingyet · 09/02/2020 13:12

Glad I'm not the only one.
There are some burgundy ones on the Hush sale site...

I don’t wear my boden Ravello to work much any more and I thought them timeless workwear. I have put a pair of knee high boots over my jeans yesterday and today in honour of Storm Ciara but normally I only wear ankle boots now.

I still have a whistles tubing skirt in a drawer that I am debating getting out. My midis all need a lot of ironing and I think midis have got too long and I am 5’10, I have started to buy them in the regular length rather than tall/long option.

merlotbythefire · 09/02/2020 15:19

OMG, I live in my Ravello tips for work! I have them in loads of colours.

I have large boobs so feel limited a lot of the time but the Ravello tops seem to work.

What should I be wearing instead?!

worries about major fashion faux pas tomorrow

then spies shopping opportunities... Grin

I didn't go for the short tube skirts but I loved the longer ruched ones from Me and Em and wore them to death - so much that I got bored senseless with them. But they're still in good nick and I think they still suit me so I've put them away for the time being. If I got rid and then wanted to go back to them in a few years it would cost £££ to replace them and they almost certainly wouldn't be as good quality.

Likewise I've just gone back to knee length boots and I'm very glad I kept some from last time as I doubt I could afford decent new ones at the moment.

Of course you need space to do it but fashion is circular if you're able and willing to play the long game.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/02/2020 15:29

Weirdly, I wore my Hush black mini yesterday, with black opaques, black trainers and a slouchy grey jumper.

I've just given my last Ravello to the charity shop - they crease so badly.

Yes to this. I'm lucky I have lots of storage space so anything I feel I just wont wear but is still in good condition gets put away. I too have cracked out my knee high boots recently that have been in storage for a couple of years.

VenusTiger · 09/02/2020 16:01

I dont like midi, on trend or not, I won't wear something that doesn't suit me, so I still wear knee length, mini or maximum length.
I'm 5'4 but have 33" inside leg so midi looks weird on me, makes my torso disappear Confused

notstockpilingyet · 09/02/2020 17:36

Emboldened by stories from fellow defy-ers of fashion.
Midi makes me look like a 19thc peasant in a muddy field.

I wore my hush ruched skirt in burgundy last weekend when I went out for dinner! I wore it with black opaque tights and ankle boots (in a black animal print pattern). On top I had a white cami and a black blazer with a statement necklace.

Settlersofcatan · 10/02/2020 08:22

Midi length is horrible on me so I have stuck with knee length

notstockpilingyet · 10/02/2020 08:48

I bet you looked great, @clickn and @Clickncollect
Indeed, @settlers. I think midi is very...undemocratic.
On the slouchy jumper/looser T theme - you need it to balance out the ruche. But how do you stop looking swamped (I'm a short hourglass)?

Opened this thread as I'm sitting here in my Hush burgundy ruched skirt, and hadn't realised that I'm not on trend!
I'm wearing it with a white Hush slogan t shirt, a purplish Boden cardi, black fleece-lined leggings (bought accidentally in TKMaxx, thinking they were tights, but quite like them), and dark blue Converse.
I'm 56, but it seems to be a look for any age: I don't think there's a mutton issue.

florriepeck · 10/02/2020 14:07

A midi skirt wouldn't suit me: too June Whitfield.

notstockpilingyet · 10/02/2020 14:12

Florrie, I salute you (and I'm close to your age, too)

I donated my Whistles midi ruched skirt to charity last year. I downsized to a smaller house and only kept the clothes I really liked.

XingMing · 10/02/2020 14:44

I wear my ruched skirt to go to and from the gym, over black running tights and low calf length boots, so I can be respectable for dog walking and supermarket runs before or after exercise. However, I am in my seventh decade and I think the fashion rules exist so I can break them with impunity.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/02/2020 19:25

This thread is actually making me tempted to buy some of those leggings from All Saints that have a little mini skirt over! They'd be perfect for days when all I'm doing is schlepping around at home, maybe nipping to the local shop or for a walk in the park.

XingMing · 10/02/2020 20:20

Exactly how I wear mine Remus. I do know that knee-length ain't current fashion but midi in winter rain and mud is a recipe for filthy in the rural west. You can't wear a proper coat that keeps the rain out over a flowing skirt, so you end up with drenched, muddy calves. My wet weather gear covers anything knee length ( the alternative is ancient cargo shorts over navy rowing tights, for colour co-ordination only). And warmth. I may be nearly geriatric but I work quite hard to stay fit, and I rather enjoy being able to wear athleisure, even if I don't choose to parade the thread veined legs.

XingMing · 10/02/2020 20:24

One of my exercise trainers, who is over 70, wears them Remus. They look great on any age with good posture and a fit body. It helps that she was beautiful and is very fit, with impeccable posture.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/02/2020 20:48

I have neither good posture nor a fit body, but I do still have relatively decent pins.

XingMing · 10/02/2020 21:07

Posture and fitness can be improved, but good pins are heck of a starting pont.

CountFosco · 10/02/2020 21:18

I still wear mine all the time. It's more midthigh than knee length though. And I don't work in a fashionable industry so if I'm not on trend then no-one cares.

whiskyremorse · 10/02/2020 21:31

@slipperyeel you can dye them if they have faded but otherwise good. I dye my black leggings/aimees/ivy dresses etc when they fade and they come up really well

KiteflyingKat · 10/02/2020 21:47

My Boden ruched skirt (that I bought because everyone was raving about it on here) went to the charity shop recently. Not because it was out of fashion, more because it was unflattering and I really disliked it. I have no idea why it was so popular Hmm
