Dr Martens- how to wear?

I love DMs. However, I’m never quite sure what to wear with them. I’m middle aged and a bit stumpy.
Jeans? Dresses? I used to love a dress with DMs- can I still do this now I’m an aged crone? I don’t want to look tragic. Just comfy.

Wear them with anything and enjoy!

Playdoughbum · 08/02/2020 18:14

I’m not good looking enough to do that ha ha. I need to look presentable in order to look vaguely human Grin

I've been hankering after a pair for years and should have done it years ago, because I think they are quite difficult to pull off as one gets older. Tried thinking about what I would wear with them, they need a certain overall style to work. What style and colour were you thinking of?

EngagedAgain · 08/02/2020 18:23

Weary, good idea, I'd forgotten about the Chelsea boots. What colour are yours? Unless I find a better colour I'm leaning towards black.

Im nearly 42 and have a pair with skulls on. I wear them with everything

ofwarren · 08/02/2020 18:29

I'm 40 and have had a black pair for years. I wear mine with everything. Dresses, skinny jeans, skirts, leggings. They are so comfortable!

Whatsnewpussyhat · 08/02/2020 18:32

I wear mine with dresses or jeans, as long as the jeans are tight and don't cover the boots. I don't wear the original style though. Not my style.

There are so many to choose from.

I did see a teenager wearing a pair with cropped baggy trousers. If I tried that though I'd look more like Mr Tumble.

zippyswife · 08/02/2020 18:39

42 and wear them every single day (till it’s Birkenstock’s weather). Wear them with jeans dresses short skirts trousers (for work). Literally go with everything and make me look like I have more of a style. I love them. I went for the burgundy vegan ones. And they are beautiful.

slipperyeel · 08/02/2020 18:56

44 and wear them with everything, got the (flat) Chelsea boot style last year and I love them. I’m 5ft2.

Playdoughbum · 08/02/2020 18:57

I want black 1460s. I used to wear them with floaty dresses and skirts but I can’t do floaty now as there is too much of me.
I do have others I wear but I want to start looking nice not just like someone who got dressed blindfold.

I have the normal boots in black. Love to wear them to work when I just want to feel comfy - either with black skinny trousers or dresses.
Personally I think they look cooler with dresses than trousers, as they create such a nice contrast to the femininity/ frilliness of dresses.

thedevilinablackdress · 08/02/2020 19:28

What about wearing them with something non frilly - sharp and and Scandi. COS, Kin etc.

Notasyoungasiwas · 08/02/2020 19:32

Can I jump on this please! My daughter has just bought a pair and has heard all sorts of things about 'breaking them in'. Any tips??

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 08/02/2020 19:35

i just got a pair to wear on the back of dh's bike....I have been trotting about in them in skinnny jeans to break them in, no blisters so far!

the ones I have are quite chunky in the sole and have a steel toe

but i want some of the prettier one too now!

Fairylea · 08/02/2020 19:51

I am 40 and I wear mine with Next relaxed skinny jeans rolled up so the top of the jeans rests on the top of the boot. I wear oversized baggy jumpers with a utility jacket type coat and big scarves. Very bohemian type / arty scruffy. Grin

Playdoughbum · 08/02/2020 19:51

You do need to break them in- plasters and wearing round the house. Once they are worn in they are so comfy and supportive too.
I will look at the scandi stuff. I might be too booby for it though😂

Fairylea · 08/02/2020 19:59

The softer ones - pascals- don’t need hardly any breaking in compared to the original ones. I can only wear the pascals. I could wear the originals when I was younger but I find them torturous now.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/02/2020 20:45

I got some of the monkey boots (Church) at the end of last year, and have been wearing them with:

Cropped Levi 501s in black or charcoal grey.
Midi dresses. (Today a leopsrd print one, layered over a skinny polo neck, with opaque tights.)
Leather mini skirt with 100 denier opaques.
Wide leg cropped trousers, with knee-high socks under them.

I’m 46, size 10.

FilledSoda · 08/02/2020 20:50

Oooh this is timely .
I'm considering pascals.
Fat and fifty, I hope I'm not about to make an expensive mistake.

Craftycorvid · 08/02/2020 20:59

Do it! I live in my docs and I’m definitely middle aged. If you like floaty things with boots, try a skirt in a light fabric with a more structured or chunky jumper on top.

ofwarren · 08/02/2020 21:39

I've never bought a pair new so I didn't have to break them in. I've always got mine from eBay. My feet are so sensitive so I'm too much of a wuss to attempt a new pair Grin

noodlezoodle · 08/02/2020 21:59

Cropped jeans, midi dresses, pleated midi skirts. Anything really! I'm 46 and the only person who has raised an eyebrow at me wearing them is my mum (some things never change) Grin

I never managed to break in the ones I had as a teenager, despite taking to them with a hammer, but I bought some Pascals last year and they are incredibly soft and comfortable.

MrsZola · 08/02/2020 22:07

I'm 57 and still wear my docs. I wore them to my son's wedding last year with my posh dress. Wear them with anything you feel comfortable in. I have traditional docs in a few colours - most if them are pre China manufacturing (they never needed breaking in), but my newer ones definitely need breaking in.
